Abstract: A novel method and apparatus for producing an endless flexible seamed belt using a punch and die is disclosed. The punch and die have patterned edges in the form of a puzzle cut pattern with extremely small nodes and kerfs. The cutting tolerances of the patterned edges make it necessary to fix the punch with respect to the die so that there is no misalignment of the punch and die between cutting operations. This is accomplished by resiliently fixing the punch to the die, rather than having the punch attached to the force generating assembly as in normal punch and die assemblies. Belt material is positioned between a stock gap between the punch and die and the force generating assembly is activated to provide the cutting force. Once the belt material is cut, the cutting force is removed and the force generating assembly returns to its retracted position. There are two cutting edges on the punch and die so that a first end of one belt and a second end of another belt are formed in a single cutting operation.

  • Patent number: 6435067
Abstract: A trim press article handling apparatus includes a punch plate, a die plate, a plunger, and a receiver. The punch plate has a punch, and the die plate has a die cooperating in relative movement with the punch plate to sever articles from a thermoformable web. The plunger is carried by one of the punch plate and the die plate having a tapered advancing head. The receiver is carried by the other of the punch plate and the die plate having a tapered recess configured to receive the plunger. A tapered article locator provided within a thermoformed web also having articles therein is captured between the plunger and the receiver as the punch plate and die plate are brought together there about, thereby imparting alignment of an article in the web between the punch and the die. A method for aligning and severing articles from a web is also provided.

  • Patent number: 6397715
Abstract: A punch and die tool for cutting a slug from a sheet of material that is retained in the opening of the die and does not adhere to or follow the punch on its upward stroke, and a method for retaining a slug in a die, are disclosed. The die is formed with one or more irregularities or grooves on the edge of the die face so that the slug cut by the operation of the punch and die will have a burr on its edge. The burr causes the slug to lodge in the inside surface of the die and prevents the slug from following the punch on its upward stroke.

  • Patent number: 6324951
Abstract: A system for punching and bundling metal sheets, particularly for electric machines, has a die for punching the metal sheets. A die plate cooperates with the die, and a shaft receives and stacks the punched metal sheets. A device separates the punched metal sheets stacked in the receiving shaft. The separating device has at least two wedge elements which penetrate at a predetermined height of the stack of punched metal sheets, into the metal sheet stack at least approximately perpendicularly to the longitudinal axis of the receiving shaft.

  • Patent number: 6318223
Abstract: A novel method and apparatus for producing an endless flexible seamed belt using templates is disclosed. A first form of the template is a mask template with a template aperture in the form of a puzzle cut pattern to be used in combination with an excimer laser. The template is placed between the excimer laser source and the belt material to be cut. As the excimer laser traverses the width of the belt, the laser forms a puzzle cut pattern on the belt. A second form of the template is a punch and die having patterned edges in the form of a puzzle cut pattern with extremely small nodes and kerfs.

  • Publication number: 20010025557
Abstract: A compound punching apparatus for providing a substrate having half of the perforations formed from one major surface of the substrate and the other half of the perforations formed from the opposite major surface. The arrangement of the punches create equal and opposite stress forces in the substrate that essentially cancel each other out to provide a product meeting exacting planarity requirements. The compound punching apparatus includes two diametrically opposed dies and punching tools, a feed system, a drive system and a frame.

  • Patent number: 6070507
Abstract: A package is provided with a lid and container that are heat sealed together. A multi-ply sheet material is provided for being thermoformed to define the container which has a tapering wall and bulge-resistant bottom end. Prior to thermoforming the container from the sheet, the sheet is heated with oval pads on a plurality of plates which are arranged in a configuration to facilitate control of the sheet temperature. A plug is used in the thermoforming process to contact the sheet and position the sheet within a die. A lid sheet is heat sealed to the container sheet over the thermoformed containers so as to produce a pair of spaced-apart, annular bead heat seals. The package is completed by severing the sealed-together sheets at the periphery of the container with a punch and die set that produces and clean, smooth cut surface.
