Patent number: 4887357Abstract: A saw blade and saw-blade support are provided for a power-driven saw. The saw blade has planar cutting members and planar link members which are pivotally connected together. Each cutting member has a recess for receiving a portion of a link member. The saw-blade support is a blade support face, including a generally straight first section for bearing the cutting load, an arcuate second section merging with the straight first section and defining an end of the elongate member, and an arcuate third section merging with the arcuate second section, but having less curvature than the second section. The end of the saw-blade support carried by the power drive components has an outwardly-flared guide wall for leading said saw blade from the power drive onto the saw-blade support.Type: GrantFiled: July 1, 1988Date of Patent: December 19, 1989Assignee: Pro Power CorporationInventor: Carl J. Patent number: 4873903Abstract: Saw chain is assembled with wear links for improving the resistance of saw chain to abrasion from the saw bar. In one embodiment, the wear links are mounted one beside each steel side link in the chain and are constructed to ride along the outer surfaces of the pair of parallel rails upon which the side links also ride as the chain is driven around the bar. The wear links, however, are formed of a material that better resists abrasion than steel but consequently has less tensile strength. To assure that the tensile load on the chain is assumed by the steel side links while the chain is supported on the bar by the wear links, the wear links have oblong pin openings of the same height but of greater length than the circular openings of the side links. In a second embodiment, the wear links are mounted on both sides of each drive link rather than beside each side link.Type: GrantFiled: July 7, 1988Date of Patent: October 17, 1989Assignee: Blount, Inc.Inventor: Michael D. Patent number: 4793232Abstract: An apparatus for cutting a soft material, such as meat, from a hard material, such as bone, according to the invention has a chain formed of a succession of alternating cutting and coupling links extending along a longitudinal line. The cutting links are of generally polygonal cross-sectional shape and have corners forming longitudinally extending sharp cutting edges spaced a predetermined maximum transverse distance from the line. In addition the coupling links are of a predetermined maximum radial dimension from the line shorter than the distance such that the cutting edges project transversely beyond the coupling links and the cutting links are rotatable in the chain about the line. This chain is advanced in a longitudinal direction parallel to the line. Thus the cutting links will naturally pivot to lie flat on the hard material and slide therealong, neatly cutting along the hard/soft interface.Type: GrantFiled: May 20, 1986Date of Patent: December 27, 1988Assignees: Etablissements Arrive S.A., Union Financiere pour le Developpement de l'EconomieInventors: Daniel Villemin, Paul Romand

Patent number: 4756221Abstract: A saw chain has pivotally interconnected chain links which includes cutting links and safety links and these links are effective as working links. The cutting links are each provided with a cutting tooth for cutting into wood and the safety links are each provided with a projection which limits the depth of the cut of the cutting tooth which follows the safety link. The pivot axes of the chain links lie in an action plane above the guide bar in the stretched portion of the saw chain when the latter is subjected to the pulling force exerted by the drive of the chain saw. The cutting links are pivotable with respect to this plane. In addition, the safety links can also be pivotable in this manner. When the cutting links are in their pivoted-out position under this pulling force, no clearance angle is available at the roof of the cutting tooth so that the cutting edge has no cutting effect. For this reason, there is no kickback when the saw chain is placed against the wood.Type: GrantFiled: January 28, 1987Date of Patent: July 12, 1988Assignee: Andreas StihlInventors: Karl Nitschmann, Hans Dolata, Werner Hartmann

Patent number: 4754549Abstract: With motor-driven chain saws, there is the danger that the chain saw will be thrown upwardly and rearwardly when it is applied to wood by the user with a forward thrust. Serious injuries can then occur. The invention is directed to a motor-driven chain saw which is so configured that the cutting forces are automatically reduced in response to the occurrence of excessive reaction forces so that the reaction force is immediately reduced to a tolerable amount thereby eliminating the kickback effect. The drive links engaging the nose sprocket of the guide bar are so dimensioned that they can further pivot in the tooth gaps of the nose sprocket out of their normal position and, in this way, take the cutting links with them in such a manner that the free angle of the cutting teeth is reduced. The drive links are latched in the pivoted-in position on the nose sprocket in order to assure that the cutting links will retain the position with the reduced free angle over the entire turnaround region of the guide bar.Type: GrantFiled: October 29, 1987Date of Patent: July 5, 1988Assignee: Andreas StihlInventors: Manfred Fischer, Wilfried Linke, Werner Hartmann

Patent number: 4643065Abstract: A saw chain length including articulated alternating center drive links and side links. Cutting links provide certain of the side links and a safety side link precedes each cutting link. The safety side link and its opposing tie strap link have shaved heel portions and thereby are raised off the guide bar when normally tensioned around the guide bar. Patent number: 4081009Abstract: A tree cutting method and apparatus includes at least one shear blade having its tree contacting edge recessed to define a pair of spaced shearing edges with a fiber receiving groove therebetween. A fiber removing device is recessed within the groove out of contact with the solid wood of the tree and is preferably in the form of a driven endless fiber removing chain. As pressure is applied by the spaced shearing edges of shear projections of the blade against the tree, the fiber removing device removes the fibers that are fed into the groove. The removal of fibers greatly reduces the transverse force required by the shear blade to penetrate the tree or bole, and further reduces the resulting longitudinal shearing forces applied to the tree due to the longitudinal compression as the blade moves transversely through the tree thereby minimizing longitudinal splitting of the bole.Type: GrantFiled: October 22, 1976Date of Patent: March 28, 1978Assignee: FMC CorporationInventor: John Curlett
