  • Patent number: 6601490
Abstract: A process for forming small stacks from an initial stack of sheet material by cutting includes providing a single guillotine cutter machine which comprises a rear table part for receiving the material to be cut and a front table part for receiving the cut material, separating the initial stack into partial stacks by a plurality of cuts in a first direction perpendicular to a direction of feed thereof, and pushing back and rotating 90° at least a portion of the partial stacks from the front table part onto the rear table part for further cutting. The process also includes installing a first movable guide plate above the front table part, placing the partial stacks such that the partial stacks abut the guide plate, and cutting the partial stacks to produce small stacks.

  • Patent number: 5950510
Abstract: An arrangement for decelerating and shingling printed products as they are conveyed from a variable rotary cutter by a high-speed belt conveyor to a slower speed belt conveyor includes at least one depressor wheel at the entry end of the slower speed conveyor. The depressor wheel carries a plurality of depressor members in circumferential positions corresponding to the circumferential positions of cutting knives on the rotary cutter. The leading edge of each printed product entering the slow speed conveyor enters a headstop nip which reduces the speed of the entering product while its trailing edge is simultaneously momentarily depressed by a depressor on the rotating depressor wheel to enable shingling between successive products. A brake pad cooperates with the depressors to decelerate the printed products to a speed close to the surface speed of the slower belt conveyor.

  • Patent number: 5791218
Abstract: In a cutting device having a moving (disc) cutter and a fixed cutter which extends in a cutting direction, wherein the moving cutter moves along the fixed cutter, thereby cutting a medium which is interposed therebetween, a presser member which is movable together with a medium pressing interlocking plate is lowered to press on the medium to fix the same at a portion close to a cutting position since a bearing attached to the moving cutter engages with the medium pressing interlocking plate to press down the same as the moving cutter moves. Since the moving cutter cuts the medium at this state, the cut edge of the medium can be excellent in linearity even if it has low rigidity in the outward-surface direction at right angles to the surface thereof. While the moving cutter does not cut the medium, the presser member is retracted to a standby position.

  • Patent number: 5150647
Abstract: Apparatus for repeatedly cutting stacks of overlapping sheets has a first cutting machine from which large stacks are transferred to a loading station which is adjacent a transfer station where the stacks are loaded upon successive wheel-mounted pallets for transport into the second cutting machine. A feeding unit is provided to shift selected numbers of stacks on the pallet which is located in the second machine onto a working platform beneath the guillotine type knife and the hold-down device of the second cutting machine so that the pallet supports portions of stacks which are being severed. The stacks are oriented on the pallet at the loading station, and additional changes in orientation of the stacks can be carried out on the pallet and/or on the adjacent working platform in the second cutting machine.

  • Patent number: 5136907
Abstract: Stamping die for use with a punch to produce holes in strip material with the resulting production of a slug has a camming rib in the die opening. The rib prevents slug pulling when the punch returns from its extended position to its retracted position. The camming rib causes the slug to become wedged in the die opening and is effective to move the slug laterally in its own plane across the leading edge of the punch thereby overcoming any surface tension or other forces which might cause the slug to adhere to the face of the punch. The camming rib can be straight and extend parallel to the axis of the die opening if the die opening is not tapered. If the die opening has a slight taper, the camming rib is inclined thereby to cause movement of the slug across the face of the punch as the punch moves into the die opening.

  • Patent number: 4974479
Abstract: System for controlling slugs (10, 10') in a stamping and forming machine has a slug stripper (32) for stripping slugs from the end (13) of the punch (11) and slug supporting bars (78, 80) which support slugs at their edges as they move through a passageway (82). The slug stripper (32) is mounted in the facial surface (18) of the die plate (14) and has an end portion (56) which extends partially over the die opening (44). When the punch (11) descends and punches a notch (8) in the strip material (2), the slug (10, 10') which is produced moves the stripper (32) to a retracted position. When the slug (10, 10') is moved past the end of the slug stripper (32), the slug stripper returns to its normal position so that on the return stroke of the punch the slug will be removed by the end portion (58) of the stripper. The slugs are maintained in a stack in the slug passageway (82) by opposed supporting bars (78, 80) which are resiliently biased against opposite edges of the slugs.

  • Patent number: 4850257
Abstract: Apparatus for cutting stacks of sheets has a first cutting machine which subdivides large piles of overlapping sheets into elongated strip-shaped stacks. The stacks are accumulated on a platform which is moved into a second cutting machine wherein a selected number of stacks is pushed by a feeding device across the cutting plane of a guillotine type knife before the knife descends to separate smaller stacks which come to rest on a plate or enter a gap formed in response to retraction of the plate so that the severed portions of the stacks can be advanced to a processing machine. The stacks which are about to be severed are pushed by a biasing device against a stop which extends at right angles to the cutting plane in the second machine, and each such stack is further pushed by an aligning device so that it abuts the feeding device. This ensures that the stacks are properly oriented prior to severing by the knife in the second machine.

  • Patent number: 4821615
Abstract: Slug retainer for the die assembly of a stamping and forming machine comprises a thin sheet of resilient metal which is on the rear end of the removable portion of the die assembly. Slugs produced by the punch and die are pushed through a slug passageway in the die assembly and through a slug opening in the sheet. The metal sheet has an integral ear which bears agains the endmost slug and which is flexed when the endmost slug is ejected. Slugs are thereby prevented from spilling when the removable portion of the die assembly is removed.
