  • Patent number: 7521628
Abstract: A string musical instrument, such as an electric guitar, comprises a plurality of sound pickups and a user interface which allows the user rapid access to various configurations of pickup settings and connections. An embodiment of the musical instrument has a user interface which allows quick access to all forty-seven possible pickup connections available in a guitar having three single-coil pickups. Another embodiment of the invention allows rapid to access a large number of possible pickup connections made possible with the use of dual coil pickups, or a combination of single-coil and dual-coil pickups on a single guitar. The different pickup configurations are accessed via user operated controls such as clear illuminated momentary buttons or touch pads. Although the musical instrument provides a large number of accessible pickup configurations, a user display makes the determination of the pickup configuration intuitive and relatively simple.

  • Patent number: 7501571
Abstract: A lighting display master controller responds to an electronic vibration signal produced by a sensor when an instrument is played, to selectively energize light sources of different colors in a predefined pattern. The master controller energizes specific light sources of a desired color by selecting a row and column within an array. In one embodiment, the light sources are on a flexible substrate disposed within an optically transparent plastic sheath that is attached to the instrument. The pattern applied in selectively energizing light sources can be stored or transmitted in real-time from a concert controller host or personal computer. The light system can also be used to enable a student to practice and record a sequence defined by an instructor. The lights that are energized provide visual cues to the student, and the recording that is made enables the instructor to evaluate the student's performance.

Abstract: Some embodiments of the invention provide a computer system for processing an audio track. This system includes at least one DSP for processing the audio track. It also includes an application for editing the audio track. To process audio data in a first interval of the audio track, the application first asks and obtains from the DSP an impulse response parameter related to the DSP's processing of audio data. From the received impulse response parameter, the application identifies a second audio-track interval that is before the first interval. To process audio data in the first interval, the application then directs the DSP to process audio data within the first and second intervals.

A work memory 4 stores values of parameters. A drum pad 1 has a percussion surface part 10, and a percussion pattern-detecting section detects a pattern of percussion applied to the percussion surface part 10 of the drum pad 1 and outputs a value of the parameter indicative of the detected pattern of percussion. • Patent number: 7378589
Abstract: A sound determination unit previously divides sound into a low sound range for first sound, a middle sound range for second sound, and a high sound range for third sound by its frequency band. When sound information detected by the microphone is inputted to the sound determination unit, the sound determination unit determines whether the frequency band of that sound information is in the predetermined low sound range or not. When it is in the low sound range, a signal to operate a first vibrator is generated from a first controller. When it is in the middle sound range, a signal to operate a second vibrator is generated from a second controller. • Patent number: 7361827
Abstract: An electronic system, which serves as a recorder and an automatic player, is installed in an automatic player piano, and hammer sensors, which are implemented by photo couplers, report current hammer positions through analog signals to a data processor so that the data processor analyzes pieces of hammer data for recording the performance in a set of music codes; the analog signals are amplified through an operational amplifier and, thereafter, converted to discrete values of digital hammer signals so that an offset voltage is unavoidably introduced into the analog signals; when the photo couplers vary the light-to-photocurrent converting characteristics due to the aged deterioration, the data processor takes the offset voltage into account, and calibrates the hammer sensors, thereby making the digital hammer signals correctly express the current hammer positions.

The technology enables the operator to control remote devices, even while the operator is engaged in other activities. For an exemplary musical performance application, the remote control apparatus may take the form of a normal sized ring worn on a finger of a hand that the musician uses to play a musical instrument. The ring senses position or movement, e.g. of one or more fingers of the hand. In the examples, the remote control apparatus uses a capacitive measurement technique to measure an electrical field generated in the vicinity of the hand indicative of position. • Patent number: 6696633
Abstract: As an electronic tone is generated in response to performing operation, the electronic tone is picked up by microphones corresponding to left and right channels, and picked-up sound signals thus generated by the microphones are then subjected to signal processing, such as reverberation impartment utilizing acoustic conditions of the interior of a room. Picked-up sound signals having undergone such signal processing are audibly reproduced via rear speakers. Then, once an automatic adjustment instruction is given from a user, measuring tones are reproduced stereophonically, and contents of the signal processing of the individual channels are adjusted on the basis of measured results of picked-up sound signals generated by the microphones picking up the reproduced measuring tones.

Abstract: In a music system, an input unit is manipulated for inputting a signal representative of a performance operation amount rendered by a performer, and an output unit is provided for outputting a music sound in response to the signal fed from the input unit. The input unit has a grip part that is grasped by the performer and shaped to receive a dynamic pressure caused from grasping by the performer for inputting the performance operation amount. A conversion part is provided in the input unit for converting the dynamic pressure applied by the performer into a force acting in a specified direction. A detection part is positioned to align a sensitivity thereof with the specified direction for sensing the force generated by the conversion part and outputting the signal indicative of the performance operation amount in response to the sensed force.

Abstract: Main speakers are arranged on the enclosure front surface of an electronic piano. Auxiliary speakers (18L, 18R) are arranged on the rear surface of the enclosure. Microphones are arranged in close proximity of the main speakers. A performance sound is regenerated from the main speakers. The regenerated sound from the main speakers is picked up by microphones (20L, 20R). FIR filters are used to generate the reflected signal of a picked-up sound signal from the microphones. The generated reflected sound signal is regenerated from auxiliary speakers.

Abstract: A sound generating system produces tones from an audio signal as if tones originally produced from an acoustic guitar are converted to an electric signal through a microphone; the electric signal is produced from vibrations of the strings through a pickup unit, and is converted to digital signals; a digital signal processor simulates reverberation generated through a resonator of the guitar and direct tones directly produced from the strings through plural sorts of digital data processing; the signal component representative of the reverberation is added to the signal component representative of the direct tones for producing the audio signal; the digital signal processor simulates the direct tones through the function of an all-pass filter so that the reproduced sound has the timbre approximate to the timbre of the original tones.

  • Patent number: 6441294
Abstract: The instant device provides a method for enhancing the sound of any acoustic/electric guitar and other musical instrument by electronically oscillating and manipulating the sound emitted by the guitar or other instrument. The prior art utilizes a manually activated processor that when used, in conjunction with a guitar and sound amplifying device, is capable of creating a broad range of sounds. The processor has customarily been located upon the floor and is activated by a foot pedal. This presented method replaces the prior art pedal processors and the need to be physically in proximity to the processor to activate the pedal and the processor. It accomplishes this by providing electronic means integral with a guitar strap whereby upward and downward movements of the guitar neck or guitar body activate the electronic means creating variable electronic signals to an amplifier or other amplifying device enabling a wide range of distorted sounds to be emitted from the guitar.

  • Patent number: 5977474
Abstract: An amplifier circuit for providing a combined clean and dirty output signal from an electric guitar. The circuit comprises a panning pedal that has two potentiometers attached thereto so that movement of the panning pedal results in two continuously varying ranges of resistances being produced by the potentiometers. The output signal of the guitar is provided to the panning pedal and the resistance values of the potentiometers determine the proportion of the guitar output signal that is to be provided to a clean pre-amp stage and the proportion that is to be provided to a dirty pre-amp stage. The clean pre-amp stage amplifies the output signal substantially without distortion and the dirty pre-amp stage amplifies the signal so as to produce a saturated output signal. The output of the clean pre-amp stage and the dirty pre-amp stage are then combined to produce a single output signal.
