  • Patent number: 5628238
Abstract: A hydraulic actuator for an isolator such as a diverter valve, the actuator comprising a hydraulic ram (1) one end of which is connected to a lever (2) which is in turn connected to a shaft (3) for a valve plate or other closure. The basic novel characteristic of the actuator is that the end of the actuator frame remote from the shaft is connected to the isolator frame by means of a torque arm reaction anchor (4) so as to prevent the actuator from rotating with the shaft.

  • Patent number: 5493953
Abstract: A cylinder and piston construction for a compressor or vacuum pump has a cylinder defined by co-axial cylinder and guideway sleeves. The guideway sleeve is larger in diameter than the cylinder sleeve and the cylinder sleeve extends axially into the guideway sleeve. A piston has a cylindrical base which is guided via skirt bearings in the guideway and a head which extends from the base into the compression chamber defined by the cylinder sleeve and has a piston ring which forms a sliding seal with the cylinder sleeve. An annular cavity is defined between the piston head and the piston base into which the cylinder sleeve extends so that the top skirt bearing is positioned closer to the top of the piston head and further away from the bottom skirt bearing so as to steadily guide the piston head in the cylinder sleeve, thereby reducing wear and increasing the life of the pump.

  • Patent number: 4998460
Abstract: A piston engine comprising a piston movable in a recriprocating manner in a cylinder, while during operation a wedge-shaped gap is present between piston and cylinder. The piston divides the cylinder into a first chamber and a second chamber, which communicate with each other through the gap. A stable central position of the piston is obtained by means of the wedge-shaped gap, which mainly determines a pressure difference between the first chamber and the second chamber. A particular application of the piston engine is a cryo-cooler, by means of which, for example, processors of computers are cooled.

  • Patent number: 4796516
Abstract: An improved linear guiding mechanism with a standing part and a moving part which have respective uniform cross sections. A pair of spaced guiding channels is formed between these parts and respective linear ball bearings are arranged in both channels that interconnect the two parts. The channel walls are abutting the balls via steel bars extending along the channels. Preferably the standing part defines a cylinder in which a piston is moved and its shaft is connected to the moving part. The parts are made of light and soft material such as aluminum or plastic and manufactured by extrusion technique. The rather high variation of dimensions of such parts are compensated by means of biasing forces that press the channels together, and the biasing forces are sufficiently high to resist operational load. The length of the ball bearings is at least the half of the maximum stroke.

  • Patent number: 4623420
Abstract: An anvil for our ultrasonic textile slitting apparatus comprises an elongated, flat, substantially rectangular, housing in which two pistons are disposed for motion relative to one another along the longitudinal axis of the housing. A first piston, responsive to fluid pressure, is urged against the force exerted by springs into motion toward the second piston for causing the second piston, which is provided with a slitting implement, to be urged toward contact with the output surface of an ultrasonic horn. Further, springs are interposed between the first and the second piston for urging the pistons apart, but becoming compressed responsive to such fluid pressure. The combination of fluid pressure and springs causes the slitting implement to be kept in continuous contact with the horn despite the very high acceleration forces manifest at the horn output surface. In addition, the springs provide vibratory isolation from the vibratory energy of the horn.

  • Patent number: 4602555
Abstract: Table couplings for coupling hydraulic actuators to large shaking tables, such as earthquake simulator tables are preloaded under gaseous pressure to permit the couplings to be nontension carrying couplings, which in turn permits use of hydrostatic slip bearings between the side surfaces and the bottom surface of the table and the actuators. The hydrostatic bearings in turn reduce the need for swivels, links and yokes that carry both tension and compression. The use of compression only loading such as that permitted with the present device, also reduces the problem of making a satisfactory table foundation, because only compression loads are carried to the foundation rather than alternating tension-compression loads.
