  • Patent number: 7404847
Abstract: Disclosed is a filtration enhancement apparatus and an associated method. The apparatus includes a number of electromagnetic grids that are placed in series. The first grid conditions ambient particles to generate particles with both a positive and a negative charge. These charged particles are then delivered to a second and third grid wherein a low, medium, and/or high frequency alternating current is employed to force the positive and negative charged particles to collide and conglomerate with one another. The conglomerated particles are then sent into the ambient environment for subsequent filtration.

  • Patent number: 7198660
Abstract: Ionic emission electrostatic device (1) for depositing on the surface (sp) of a multitude of aerosol particles (p1, p2, . . . , pn) within a fluid (F), a quasi-homogeneous quantity of ions (iq). This electrostatic device (1) is constituted by a conductive discharge corona electrode (EC) and a noncorona conductive receptor electrode (ER). The pseudo-planar active face (SA) of its receptor electrode (ER) is covered by a plurality of craters with sharp edges, in a closed pseudo circle, exhibiting on their end edges (Ai) a section of minimum bend radius, and enclosing the orifices (O1, O2, . . . , On) and terminating towards the outside of the active face (SA). The craters are distributed quasi-uniformly on the active face (SA), in its two geometric directions. The surface flow of ions (iq) originating from the corona electrode (EC) and in the direction of the active face of the receptor electrode (ER) has an increased homogeneity.

  • Patent number: 7150780
Abstract: An electrostatic air cleaning device includes an array of electrodes. The electrodes include corona electrodes connected to a suitable source of high voltage so as to generate a corona discharge. Laterally displaced collecting electrodes include one or more bulges that have aerodynamic frontal “upwind” surfaces and airflow disrupting tailing edges downwind that create quite zones for the collection of particulates removed from the air. The bulges may be formed as rounded leading edges on the collecting electrodes and/or as ramped surfaces located, for example, along a midsection of the electrodes. Repelling electrodes positioned between pairs of the collecting electrodes may include similar bulges such as cylindrical or semi-cylindrical leading and/or trailing edges.

  • Patent number: 6875257
Abstract: A particle filter for microelectromechanical systems is provided that includes a particle trap formed on a substrate material. The particle trap includes an array of multidimensional geometric structures in an adjacent relationship. The geometric structures further define a plurality of multidimensional voids therebetween for trapping particles therein. The individual multidimensional geometric structures are formed by a plurality of vertically interconnected geometric shapes to define different configurations of voids between the adjacent geometric structures. In one embodiment of the filter system, an electrical bias is applied to the array of multidimensional geometric structures to facilitate attracting and trapping of particles in the filter.

  • Patent number: 5665147
Abstract: A collector plate (10) for an electrostatic precipitator is provided. Collector plate (10) has end portions (12) which are substantially symmetrical about the plane of the collector plate (10). Each end portion (12) is preferably polygonal and has a substantially unobstructed interior. Dimples (80) may be located in end portions (12) to improve rigidity of the plate. Collector plate (10) yields better precipitation results because of the minimal or nonexistent deflection of plate (10) into voltage discharge regions surrounding electrodes (36) within the precipitator. Precipitation results are further improved because power input to the precipitator is not limited by an instable electric field resulting from irregularities in the surface of plate (10).
