Abstract: A lap desk includes within its planar work surface a mouse pad and a slotted port for securing an electronic device such as a tablet, e-reader or cellular telephone in an upright and useable position. The mouse pad is substantially flush with the work surface and disposed in a right hand or left hand position for right- or left-handed users. The slotted port is inclined slightly so that the user can view and engage the device's screen while working with other objects on the lap desk. The slotted port may vary in width for electronic devices of various sizes; its depth and thickness accommodating most hand-held electronic devices without obscuring their screens. In one embodiment, the mouse pad and slotted port are molded into a module bearing a flange which can be inserted into a congruently sized aperture in any surface.

Abstract: A laminar mat comprises a rigid planar tile of moulded plastics material having on respective faces a planar layer integrated therewith during moulding of the tile, the planar layers each being of similar material. Non-adhesive integration of the planar layers during moulding eliminates the need for adhesive. The mat may be moulded so as to include one or more projections, recesses and living hinges.

The lower surface may have two depressions extending from a forward edge to a rear edge of the lower surface. The depressions are configured to engage both the upper and side surfaces of the user's legs in a manner that restricts relative motion between the base and the user's legs. In one embodiment, the depressions may have a rough texture and/or a skid-resistant material to further restrict motion of the base relative to the user's legs. In another embodiment, first and second support members may be movably attached to the base to move from a stowed position to an unstowed position for providing more surface area to engage the user's legs.
