The actuator is adapted to move a read/write head over the disk. The static eccentricity sensor is adapted to measure static eccentricity associated with the rotary body. The monitor is adapted to monitor the measured static eccentricity and generate a free-fall signal when the monitor determines that the HDD is in a free-fall state. The central controller is adapted to initiate an unloading/parking operation for the read/write head in response to the free-fall signal.

Abstract: A method for preventing dust from entering a tape drive system is disclosed. Initially, a cooling fan is allowed to rotate in one direction to provide airflow to the tape drive system. In response to a detection of a loading or unloading of a tape cartridge or a head brush operation, the cooling fan is allowed to rotate in a different direction to provide airflow in an opposite direction in order to blow any dust and debris, which may be introduced from a tape cartridge or may already be resident on a tape head, out the front of the tape drive system.

Abstract: According to one embodiment, a disk apparatus has a disk, a head, a carriage assembly, and a circulation filter provided at the corner of the base, located downstream of the head with respect to a rotating direction of the disk. A sidewall of the base has a confronting surface which continuously extends along the outer peripheral edge of the disk, is formed in an arc, and confronts with the outer peripheral edge of the disk with a gap. The base has a guide flow path 58 which is formed in the sidewall in a corner and guides an airflow to the circulation filter. The guide flow path has an inlet port and an outlet port which open to the confronting surface of the sidewall in the corner at positions away from the positions at which they confront with the outer peripheral edge of the disk.

Abstract: In a disk device, an arm for supporting a head includes upper and lower plates that are located parallel to a surface of a magnetic disk. The lower plate has a linear expansion coefficient greater than that of the upper plate. The upper and lower plates are provided with an electrically-heated wire. When a present altitude of the disk device exceeds a threshold altitude, an electric current is supplied to the heated wire so that the upper and lower plates are expanded. Due to a difference in the linear expansion coefficients between the upper and lower plates, the arm is warped in a direction away from the magnetic disk so that a distance between the head and the surface of the magnetic disk is increased.

Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention help to accomplish accurate and reliable clearance control. In one embodiment of the present invention, a disk drive device adjusts the clearance between a head element portion and a disk with a heater on a slider. The clearance control according to the present embodiment incorporates the variation in heater power efficiency in the clearance variation depending on the radial position. The clearance variation in a unit of heater power varies depending on the radial position. Taking account of the variation in the heater power efficiency in the thermal fly-height control (TFC) depending on the radial position in addition to the clearance variation between the head element portion and the disk caused by variation in fly-height or attitude, accomplishes more accurate TFC.
