Patent number: 4880596Abstract: A self-actuating reactor shutdown system incorporating a thermionic switched electromagnetic latch arrangement which is responsive to reactor neutron flux changes and to reactor coolant temperature changes. Patent number: 4783306Abstract: A pressurized water nuclear reactor has a reactor vessel arranged in a pool, which is filled with a neutron absorbing liquid, for example borated water. The reactor vessel is closed except for tubes connecting it with a tray above it. The coolant in the circuit rises from the vessel to the tray, gives up its heat by flashing, and flows back to the bottom of the vessel, driven by natural circulation. The tray is separated from the pool by a vapor-filled bell, which surrounds it. In the bell the vapor gives up its useful heat to a condenser. The relatively low boron content of the cooling circuit, compared to the pool, is achieved by continuous dilution of the condensate from vapor additionally generated out of the pool water. The dilution process is an equilibrium with continuous inflow of the pool water. The inflow is automatically controlled by the pool level, which rises when the pool water is pressed out from below the bell by overproduction of vapor.Type: GrantFiled: May 5, 1986Date of Patent: November 8, 1988Inventors: Georg Vecsey, Pal G. Patent number: 4770845Abstract: A control system for the automatic or self-actuated shutdown or "scram" of a nuclear reactor. The system is capable of initiating scram insertion by a signal from the plant protection system or by independent action directly sensing reactor conditions of low-flow or over-power.Self-actuation due to a loss of reactor coolant flow results from a decrease of pressure differential between the upper and lower ends of an absorber element. When the force due to this differential falls below the weight of the element, the element will fall by gravitational force to scram the reactor.Self-actuation due to high neutron flux is accomplished via a valve controlled by an electromagnet and a thermionic diode. In a reactor over-power, the diode will be heated to a change of state causing the electromagnet to be shorted thereby actuating the valve which provides the changed flow and pressure conditions required for scramming the absorber element.Type: GrantFiled: June 4, 1981Date of Patent: September 13, 1988Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the United States Department of EnergyInventors: Donald M. Patent number: 4762662Abstract: A thermally activated trigger device 10 comprises a pressurized closed vessel 11 with a piston 12 slideably mounted in it to divide it into two compartments 14 and 16. A fluid such as an inert gas is contained within the compartments at substantially the same pressure. One end of one of the compartments has venting means 24, such as a normally closed pipe which vents the fluid from the compartment once the pipe becomes open by rupture or melting at an elevated temperature. The resulting pressure difference between the compartments on venting of the fluid moves the piston which is connected to an actuator means for performing a desired control or safety shut-down function. The trigger device is useful for performing many control and safety shut-down functions, particularly for rendering a nuclear space reactor subcritical upon reentry to the earth's atmosphere.Type: GrantFiled: October 31, 1985Date of Patent: August 9, 1988Assignee: Rockwell International CorporationInventors: Richard B. Patent number: 4687621Abstract: An improved spectral shift-producing rod in a fuel assembly of a nuclear reactor has an elongated hollow tubular body with a pair of end plugs attached to its opposite ends to hermetically seal the rod. A burnable poison material is contained in the hollow body. The material generates a gas within the body as operation of the reactor proceeds. Also, the material is soluble in moderator water when brought into contact with the same. The rod has a weakened structural region which is subject to rupture at a given level of internal pressure. Preferably, the weakened region takes the form of a thinned disc-like portion formed in at least one of the end plugs. The water soluble material within the rod depresses power initially by absorbing neutrons. Absorption of neutrons causes generation of helium gas which increases internal pressure within the rod. When the internal pressure exceeds the rupture strength of the weakened region of the rod, the hermetic seal is broken and water enters the rod.Type: GrantFiled: August 6, 1984Date of Patent: August 18, 1987Assignee: Westinghouse Electric Corp.Inventor: Harry M. Patent number: 4587085Abstract: A safety device is disclosed for use in a nuclear reactor for axially repositioning a control rod with respect to the reactor core in the event of an upward thermal excursion. Such safety device comprises a laminated helical ribbon configured as a tube-like helical coil having contiguous helical turns with slidably abutting edges. The material of the outer lamina has a greater thermal coefficient of expansion than the material of the inner lamina. In the event of an upward thermal excursion, the laminated helical coil curls inwardly to a smaller diameter. Such inward curling causes the total length of the helical coil to increase by a substantial increment, so that the control rod is axially repositioned by a corresponding amount to reduce the power output of the reactor.Type: GrantFiled: August 15, 1983Date of Patent: May 6, 1986Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the United States Department of EnergyInventor: Ernest Hutter

Patent number: 4304632Abstract: An inherent shutdown system for a nuclear reactor having neutron absorbing rods affixed to an armature which is held in an upper position by a magnetic flux flowing through a Curie temperature material. The Curie temperature material is fixedly positioned about the exterior of an inner duct in an annular region through which reactor coolant flows. Elongated fuel rods extending from within the core upwardly toward the Curie temperature material are preferably disposed within the annular region. Upon abnormal conditions which result in high neutron flux and coolant temperature, the Curie material loses its magnetic permeability, breaking the magnetic flux path and allowing the armature and absorber rods to drop into the core, thus shutting down the fissioning reaction. The armature and absorber rods are retrieved by lowering the housing for the electromagnet forming coils which create a magnetic flux path which includes the inner duct wall. The coil housing then is raised, resetting the armature.Type: GrantFiled: August 20, 1979Date of Patent: December 8, 1981Assignee: Westinghouse Electric Corp.Inventors: Suresh K. Bhate, Martin H. Patent number: RE33030Abstract: An arrangement for controlling the moderation of a nuclear reactor which includes multiple fuel assemblies each of which includes top and bottom nozzles with fuel rods and control rod guide thimbles located therebetween. Certain ones of said assemblies include at least one tube initially filled with a gas. One end of the tube rests on the lower nozzle upper surface while the upper end terminates at a point just below the lower plate in the upper nozzle. A spike immovably fixed in the lower plate of the upper nozzle is directed downwardly toward the end of the tube. As the tube expands or grows during operation in a reactor, and at a point where the criticality factor may proceed to less than one, the expanded tube will be pierced by the spike and thus permit the escape of gas from the tube which is then replaced by water coolant circulating through the reactor.Type: GrantFiled: February 5, 1986Date of Patent: August 22, 1989Assignee: Westinghouse Electric Corp.Inventor: George R.
