Publication number: 20120187091Abstract: Sample extraction or trimming from an end strip of an elongated formed metal that is coiled in layers within a tensioned metal coil resting on driven rollers. A cut channel is formed across the material width. In some embodiments the cut channel is formed between the rollers and by cutting at an angle relative to the coil outer surface. Coil weight and/or a coil tensioner mechanism inhibits coil relaxation along the cut channel by maintaining tension on wrapped layers against each other when the coil is unbanded for sample extraction. The coil is rotated so that the cut channel clears the rollers laterally. Material downstream the cut is then separated from the coil. After trimming and/or sample extraction the coil maintains rolled tautness for ease of rebanding.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 21, 2011Publication date: July 26, 2012Applicant: SIEMENS INDUSTRY, INC.Inventors: Jennifer Grzyb, Patrick Salpeck, Len Walnoha

Patent number: 5678964Abstract: A machine tool having a machining member such as a grinding wheel, a milling cutter, shaping cutter or also includes a slide on which a straight edge bar is mounted. The straight edge bar is engaged by the machining member to machine a surface on the bar held on the slide. The slide is moved at the feed rate used for machining with the particular machining member used, and then the bar is rotated about its longitudinal axis, that is, the axis parallel to the movement of the slide. The amount of error from a straight line that has been formed is sensed by sensors positioned in the same plane as the contact line of the grinding wheel. The actual error of the slide is thus determined, and portions of the surface of the bar can be gradually scraped or refined by other means until the sensors indicate that the surface has become a precise straight edge. The straight edge surface can then be used as a reference for checking workpieces or for automatic error compensation. Patent number: 5513932Abstract: A method of using a camshaft miller for working a workpiece in which a plurality of journals are provided on the workpiece, cams having the same phases are disposed on both sides of each of the respective journals and a ring is disposed at one end of the workpiece, includes providing a cutter having, at a central portion thereof, a central chip for working a ring and other chips disposed on both sides of the central chip for simultaneously working cams having the same phases, working the cams of the same phases of each of the journals simultaneously with the other chips, subsequently with respect to the journals, and working the ring with the central chip. According to this method, the cams and the ring can be worked by a single working machine and the cams of each set thereof having the same phase can be simultaneously worked, thereby improving the productivity.Type: GrantFiled: March 20, 1995Date of Patent: May 7, 1996Assignee: Kabushiki Kaisha Komatsu SeisakushoInventor: Koji Asada

Patent number: 5489169Abstract: A broaching machine for cutting keyways in a bore of a piece part. There is a stationary bed plate on which is slidably mounted a moveable vise which slides along the bed plate. The jaws of the moveable vise clamp the piece part which is to be machined. A broach holder lowers the broach through an upper fixed support which has upper broach guide means disposed therein. The broach then passes through the piece part and through a lower broach guide means positioned in the bed plate. A broach pulling unit receives the bottom of the broach and reciprocates the broach in an up and down vertical cutting operation. The broach is maintained in position and alignment by means of the upper and lower broach guide means which are disposed above and below the piece part. The upper and lower broach guide means are removable and replaceable after a predetermined amount of wear has occurred.Type: GrantFiled: January 17, 1995Date of Patent: February 6, 1996Assignee: Lovejoy, Inc.Inventors: Daniel G. Patent number: 5439435Abstract: The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for forming a longitudinally extending keyway portion in a mill roll having a central bore. The keyway portion may be either a keyway or a tab portion. A cutting head is provided, and includes a body and one or more cutting tools extending from the periphery of the cutting head body. The cutting head is driven through the central bore of the mill roll, and the cutting tools form one or more keyway portions adjacent and communicating with the central bore.Type: GrantFiled: October 27, 1994Date of Patent: August 8, 1995Assignee: Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing CompanyInventors: Gary L. Patent number: 5435676Abstract: A method and apparatus for broaching a series of axially aligned and spaced bores in which a first broach is provided for broaching in an initial operation. The first broach has circumferentially extending cutting teeth. The first broach also has arcuately spaced, longitudinally extending grooves which cross the cutting teeth and divide the cutting teeth into arcuate segments. Broach guides in the spaces between bores have ribs arranged in the same arcuately spaced relation as the grooves about an axis coinciding with the aligned axes of the bores. The first broach is advanced through the bores with the ribs slidably received in the grooves to guide the first broach and the cutting segments, broaching arcuately spaced sectors of the bores but leaving unbroached ridges therebetween. A second broach broaches the ridges left by the first broach.Type: GrantFiled: January 19, 1994Date of Patent: July 25, 1995Assignee: National Broach & Machine CompanyInventors: Harvey J. Patent number: 5430936Abstract: Blade attachment slots for gas turbine engines are prepared by grinding to a stepped, generally straight sided configuration, semi-finish grinding to an envelope about 0.005 inches to 0.010 inches above the blueprint configuration, and finishing by broaching. This reduces the overall cost of the manufacturing process, permits a more economical use of existing broach machines, and allows greater versatility for short model runs and "just-in-time" production.Type: GrantFiled: December 27, 1993Date of Patent: July 11, 1995Assignee: United Technologies CorporationInventors: Henry Yazdzik, Jr., Gordon M. Patent number: 5339513Abstract: A method of manufacturing a thick-walled small diameter pipe by repeating a process comprising a pipe extension process and a heating process on a pipe to be processed plural times, wherein a machining process on the inner circumferential surface of said pipe to be processed is performed prior to the pipe extension process in the final cycle of said process or a process near the final cycle to remove a black skin layer, cracks and puckers, providing smooth inner surface and excellent proof pressure.Type: GrantFiled: November 30, 1992Date of Patent: August 23, 1994Assignee: Usui Kokusai Sangyo Kaisha Ltd.Inventors: Yasuaki Hashimoto, Tadahiro Uematsu

Patent number: 5315750Abstract: A blind spline broaching machine for machining splines as well as sprockets, keyways, gears, cams and contours on workpieces, such as shafts. The blind spline broaching machine of the preferred embodiment has dual rams reciprocable relative to a rotary dial. The rams hold a corresponding pair of workpieces, while the rotary dial supports one or more broaching tools. The rotary dial is rotatable to index the workpieces to and from the rams. The blind spline broaching machine also incorporates a part moving unit on its periphery, which enables the use of a single loading/unloading station at which workpieces are alternately loaded onto and unloaded from the rotary table. Because the workpieces are loaded and unloaded from the same location on the periphery of the blind spline broaching machine, the side of the blind spline broaching machine opposite the loading/unloading station remains open to permit ready access to the tooling and the interior structure of the blind spline broaching machine.Type: GrantFiled: January 5, 1993Date of Patent: May 31, 1994Assignee: Utica Enterprises, Inc.Inventor: Robert E. Patent number: 5252012Abstract: A clamping jaw arrangement for a broach puller assembly is described in which first and second jaw sets are engaged with the end face and one side of the annular groove of the broach tool. The second jaw set initially engages one side of the annular groove and is locked in position with an associated spring urged operating sleeve, and upon lifting of the broach tool in reaction to engagement with the workpiece, the first jaw set moves radially inward and is held against the chamfered end face of the tool to eliminate all axial play while ensuring proper seating of the jaw elements in each set.Type: GrantFiled: September 3, 1992Date of Patent: October 12, 1993Assignee: The Cross CompanyInventors: Joseph E.
