Abstract: A rotary drum dryer has devices for cooling shielding flights located in the combustion zone of the drum. The devices comprise cooling flights which rotate with the drum to scoop up relatively small amounts of virgin aggregate from aggregate accumulated in the lower portion of the drum and to shower this aggregate over the outer radial surface of the shielding flights upon further rotation of the drum, thereby cooling the shielding flights without substantially decreasing the mean temperature of the aggregate. Cooling efficiency is enhanced by the continuous cascading of fresh aggregate over the shielding flights from the cooling flights through a substantial portion of the drum's rotation. The cooling flights and shielding flights preferably cooperate to limit or even prevent the showering of materials into the burner flame and thus inhibit burner flame quenching and accompanying emissions.

  • Patent number: 4260373
Abstract: A system for drying and preheating small metallic particles such as chips, turnings, borings and the like to remove volatiles therefrom which includes a dryer working in conjunction with a briquetting press. The dryer includes a drying and preliminary combustion chamber includng a revolving drum therein through which the chips pass. The drying and preliminary combustion is heated and is atmospherically sealed and operated with a reducing atmosphere. The volatiles driven from the metallic particles are passed to a combustion completion chamber which is maintained at a temperature sufficient to burn the combustibles and into which air is injected to complete the combustion. The hot metallic particles are thermally insulated and sealed from the atmosphere while being conveyed from the drying and preliminary combustion chamber to the briquetting press where they are compressed into briquettes for subsequent introduction into induction furnaces and the like.

  • Patent number: 4238187
Abstract: A heat recovery system for use with a rotatable cylindrical kiln having a curved sidewall surface and which is adapted to be fired, for example, by a burner supplied through a fuel supply line with fuel oil, comprises, at least one segment member which overlies and is spaced from the kiln curved sidewall surface and which defines a heat radiation absorbing surface. A coolant circulating system is connected to the segment member and a coolant is circulated therethrough and then into a separate heat exchanger which is used for recovering the heat. The heat exchanger may be employed, for example, to preheat the oil which is delivered to a burner for firing the kiln or it may be used in a separate system requiring heat. A segment member is advantageously mounted on an undercarriage so that it may be moved toward or away from the kiln surface in accordance with the heat exchange requirements.

  • Patent number: 4226584
Abstract: A rotary kiln or combustor having a plurality of water cooled pipes secured together to define a cylinder in which material is burned. The cylinder slowly rotates about its axis, and the pipes are secured together so as to define a plurality of intermediate openings making the cylinder gas porous and through which combustion air is introduced. The improvement comprises providing a plurality of pins, secured directly to the pipes on the inside of the cylinder, that create a pattern of projections to support burning material slightly spaced from the inner cylinder wall.

  • Patent number: 4212630
Abstract: The invention has to do with an apparatus for removing heat from cylinders of the rotary kiln recuperator cooler. The apparatus comprises heat-exchange tubes which are fixed on the lateral surfaces of bow-shaped support members so that they go around the cooler surface along a wave line with a space of variable cross section being formed between the heat-exchange tubes and the surfaces of the cylinders. Such constructional arrangement of the apparatus permits the heat-transfer area to be increased and substantially greater amount of heat to be removed from the surfaces of the cylinders.
