Patent number: 11498651Abstract: A watercraft includes at least one floating member, a central frame supported thereon, first and second foot platforms, and first and second handlebars. The first and second handlebars define elongated configurations and include grasping end portions, intermediate portions pivotably coupled to the central frame, and base end portions pivotably coupled to first end portions of the respective first and second foot platforms. A propulsion system includes an axle assembly, first and second rotating arms, and first and second oars. The rotating arms are fixed relative to one another, pivotably coupled about the axle assembly at first ends, and pivotably coupled to second end portions of the foot platforms at second ends. The oars are engaged with and extend from the foot platforms. The propulsion system cycles the oars approximately 180 degrees out of phase to propel the watercraft while maintaining substantially perpendicular orientation of the oars.Type: GrantFiled: February 15, 2021Date of Patent: November 15, 2022Assignee: Ellipticraft, LLCInventors: Joseph Rhyne, Carly Rhyne

Patent number: 8668536Abstract: A fish tail propelled water vessel uses a pair of back and forth reciprocating pedals to rotate a flywheel back and forth, the paddle blade of the vessel attached to the flywheel so that the reciprocating flywheel swishes the blade through the water in side to side fashion thereby propelling the vessel. A cable attaches each pedal to its respective side of the flywheel in order to cause rotation of the flywheel. A pedal cable helps balance the pedals thereby assuring smooth pedaling of the device. Holding one of the pedals forward of the alignment point with the other pedal, holds the blade to that side, thereby steering the vessel to the opposing side.Type: GrantFiled: August 15, 2012Date of Patent: March 11, 2014Inventor: Steve Burnham

Patent number: 5702274Abstract: A floatation device with propeller drive assembly and steerable rudder for use with a ski machine allowing an individual the ability to have a self propelled water craft. The device utilizes a ski machine having a rotating flywheel to provide power for the propeller unit. The ski machine is temporarily mounted to the floatation device with the flywheel in frictional engagement with a drive pulley that transmits power to the propeller unit. A steering mechanism is included to allow the operator to pedal the device across a body of water and back. The ski machine does not require modification and can be easily and quickly removed from the device.Type: GrantFiled: December 28, 1995Date of Patent: December 30, 1997Inventor: Robert D. White

Patent number: 5584732Abstract: A human-powered, foot or hand operated paddle propulsion system for a variety of differently sized and configured watercraft. A rigid supporting subframe attaches the system to an end of the watercraft. A spaced-apart terminus is wedged towards a boat seat base. The terminus and subframe cooperatively secure the system within the boat. The subframe has a C-shaped bow plate coupling it to the boat end. The paddle assembly is removably quick-connected to the bow plate. Knobbed, slidably adjustable mounting bolts captivate the subframe upon the bow. The frame comprises a pair of adjustable, telescoping frame beams that enable it to retract or extend. The frame supports an adjustable actuating assembly including foot-operated pedals and optional hand bars for powering the boat. Cabling links the actuating assembly to the drive paddle assembly. Slidable captivation of the activating assembly upon the frame facilitates cable length and tension adjustments.Type: GrantFiled: January 11, 1996Date of Patent: December 17, 1996Assignee: Kakor Inc.Inventor: Charles R. Patent number: 5090928Abstract: A lightweight propulsion device for use with various types of lightweight boats and other small craft, including use with a swimmer is provided with a frame for mounting the propulsion device on the craft. A shaft rotatably supported on the frame carries a propeller, including flexible blades rotatably supported relative to the shaft on a hub. The blades are supported for rotation about an axis having a major radial component and stop means supported relative to the shaft limits movement of each blade in each direction from a plane through the shaft axis. A pair of cables are coupled to the shaft to turn the shaft and are positioned to be wrapped around the shaft in opposite directions. Sheaves on the shaft for each cable contain and direct the cables as they are alternately wrapped and unwrapped around the shaft.Type: GrantFiled: March 20, 1989Date of Patent: February 25, 1992Inventor: Joseph A. Patent number: 5021015Abstract: A propulsion mechanism for a boat includes a boat body; a bar being laterally provided on the boat body; a sliding block being provided on and slidable along the bar; a paddle being pivotally disposed on the sliding block and being submerged in water on which the boat body is floated; a restraining device being coupled to said paddle and being rotated in concert with the paddle; the restraining device limiting a rotatable range of the paddle; and two pulling rings being fixed to the sliding block. The sliding block is drawn to move laterally and reciprocally when the pulling rings are alternatively and reciprocally pulled by a user, so that the paddle moves relative to the water and so that a reactive force is produced to propel the boat body.Type: GrantFiled: February 20, 1990Date of Patent: June 4, 1991Inventor: June-Chi Wang

Patent number: 5000706Abstract: A rocker type propulsion mechanism for a boat includes a rocker arm pivotally provided on the boat, a lever arm being laterally connected to the rocker arm for rockably actuating the rocker arm, a paddle being pivoted on an other end of the rocker arm, and a blocking device being provided beside the paddle for limiting a rotation of the paddle. A rotation of the rocker arm causes the paddle to make a relative movement with water in order to propel the boat.Type: GrantFiled: October 20, 1989Date of Patent: March 19, 1991Inventor: June C. Patent number: 4795381Abstract: The invention relates to a vessel which comprises a floating body upon which a seat for a person is mounted. The vessel is driven by human power through a treadle mechanism which drives a propeller. The treadle mechanism comprises two actuating elements which are each pivotable and are driveable by arms or legs and which are coupled by a driving shaft through a freewheel clutch. By avoiding the death centers which are present in a cycle treadle mechanism, human power is used efficiently.By making the floating body a gliding body the water resistance is reduced, so that together with the efficient propulsion mechanism a high travelling speed through the water is reachable.Type: GrantFiled: August 24, 1987Date of Patent: January 3, 1989Inventor: Karel Willems

Patent number: 4781630Abstract: On the vehicle are mounted an actuation member, a force transmission unit and a drive element. Preferably, the actuation member is comprised of two levers, each of them being fixed to a metal cable each connected to a chain, the two chains actuating the wheels of a gear-box. The latter acts on the drive element which sets in motion the vehicle. A sliding seat enables to transmit the maximum of muscular power to both levers. One or a plurality of free wheels transform the reciprocating motion of the levers into a unidirectional motion for the drive element. With this vehicle, it is possible to optimally transform the muscular energy into driving power.Type: GrantFiled: March 24, 1987Date of Patent: November 1, 1988Assignee: Gertsch Product Innovation AGInventor: Ulrich Gertsch
