Abstract: A torque limiting assembly is disclosed comprising: an input shaft; an output shaft; and spring having a first end coupled to the input shaft and a second end coupled with the output shaft. In a low torque mode, when the input shaft is rotated the spring is compressed by a low amount and transmits a force to drive rotation of the output shaft, whereas in a high torque mode the spring is compressed by a high amount such that the input shaft rotates relative to the output shaft. This relative rotation moves or urges an engagement member so as to either: disconnect the input shaft from the output shaft; or engage a housing to prevent or inhibit rotation of the input shaft relative to the housing.

Abstract: The disclosed invention is a novel method for constructing a Low Stiffness Torsional Spring-Damper that simultaneously yields the following advantages over conventional designs: (1) the elastomer is not mold-bonded to the two metallic extremities; (2) the amount of elastomer is relatively smaller compared to conventionally constructed devices; (3) the device only allows the torsional direction to be spring loaded; (4) there is some damping inherently present in the system; (5) the device does not disintegrate on failure of the elastomeric element; and (6) the device is serviceable in the field without disengaging from the rotating shaft. Such a Low Stiffness Torsional Spring-Damper when used in a Torsional Vibration Isolator or a Torsional Vibration Damper would reduce its cost while improving its structural and modal integrity and enabling its serviceability in the field.

Abstract: A transmission device includes a holder, a pivot shaft, and an elastic member. The holder defines a receiving hole. The pivot shaft is received in the receiving hole. The elastic member is received in the receiving hole, fixed to the holder, and tightly enfolds the pivot shaft. When torques applied to the holder or the pivot shaft are larger than a predetermined value, the elastic member is deformed such that the pivot shaft rotates relative to the holder.

Abstract: An apparatus in a clutchless assembly, which connects or disconnects the transmission of rotational power when an overload equal to or greater than a limit torque occurs in an air conditioner. A rotor 10 is connected to a rotary shaft of an internal combustion engine via a chain or a belt to receive rotational power supplied from the internal combustion engine. A transmitting member 30 is connected to the rotor 10 via a medium 20 to transmit the rotational power to an air conditioner. A plurality of elastic members 40 is interposed between the rotor 10 and the transmitting member 30. When an overload equal to or greater than a limit torque is applied to the air conditioner, the plurality of elastic members 40 disconnects the transmission of the rotational power to the rotor 10. The transmission of power is disconnected without damage to components@ or surrounding components.

  • Patent number: 8272982
Abstract: A drive system for a rotary device, such as an automotive alternator compensates for and dampens the effect of sudden bidirectional rotational velocity variations of the pulley caused by sudden acceleration and deceleration of an internal combustion engine without using a one-way clutch. The drive system in one aspect comprises an axially movable cam member rotatably supported on a hub that is connected to the alternator shaft and that is journaled within the pulley. The cam member is coupled to the pulley by splines so that it rotates with the pulley while affording axial movement. Springs urge the cam member into engagement with a cam follower on the hub. Upon sudden acceleration or deceleration of the pulley, the cam member rotates angularly relative to the cam follower and moves axially to compress the springs, which exert a restoring force on the cam member and cam follower to eliminate their relative angular rotation.

Abstract: A torque transmitting cardan shaft including within the shaft an adapted intermediate member or shaft, which has a first end section, that is intended for a rotationally rigid co-action with a first universal joint yoke and a second end section, opposite the first end section, intended for a rotationally rigid co-action with a second universal joint yoke. The intermediate member or shaft and its end section is configured as and comprises two parts or subsections, which are mutually joined via a safety coupling arrangement, by means of which a free coupling of the subsections from one other can be ensured immediately after the torque, between the subsections, exceeds a predetermined value, determined by the construction of the safety coupling arrangement. An end section and its universal joint yoke includes an axially orientated cylindrical groove or recess, which has a center axis that is co-ordinated with or aligned with a rotational axis of the first end section and its co-ordinated universal joint yoke.

Abstract: A torque overload clutch, in one form, comprises outer and inner members. A recess is formed in the outer member and a radial opening is formed in the inner member. A driving member is slideably captured in the opening to move between an extended, engaged position with the recess and a retracted, disengaged position. An actuator ring is urged by a spring into engagement with the driving member to bias the driving member toward the engaged position. An end of the driving member may engage the recess to define an engagement angle that is approximately between thirty-four degrees and seventy-degrees relative to a radially oriented reference. The driving member may be slideably captured in a liner seated in the opening, and one or both may be impregnated with a lubricant. A bearing may be positioned between the inner and outer members to inhibit relative movement there between along the clutch axis.

  • Patent number: 8083596
Abstract: In one embodiment, a torque limiter comprises an outer cylindrical housing having a plurality of semicircular grooves disposed in an interior surface. An inner cylindrical housing is arranged at least partially within the outer cylindrical housing. The inner cylindrical housing has a plurality of slots passing from its interior surface to its exterior surface. A plurality of roller bearings are disposed within the slots. An elastic cylinder is also arranged within the interior of the inner cylindrical housing. When applied torque is below a torque limit, the elastic component presses the roller bearings into contact with the semicircular grooves to couple the outer and inner cylindrical housing. In response to applied torque exceeding the torque limit, the elastic component compresses sufficiently to allow the roller bearings to retract and disengage the semicircular grooves, thereby decoupling the outer and the inner cylindrical housings and preventing the transfer of torque.
