  • Patent number: 8033463
Abstract: A method for auditing ballots cast in an election, wherein each ballot is associated with a group. A subset of groups from which sample ballots will be chosen is identified. An identifier is printed on each ballot in the subset. Each ballot has a different identifier than every other ballot in its group. A check is performed to determine whether the identifiers were printed correctly on the ballots. If so, a machine re-count of ballots in each group in the subset is performed and the results are compared to the initial tally of ballots associated with the group. If there is a mismatch, a further investigation is triggered. If there is a match, manual verification is performed on sample ballots from each group. The audit may begin prior to completion of voting from all precincts by estimating the number of samples that will be necessary.

  • Patent number: 7979666
Abstract: A system and method for context-independent coding using frequency-based mapping schemes, sequence-based mapping schemes, memory trace-based mapping schemes, and/or transition statistics-based mapping schemes in order to reduce off-chip interconnect power consumption. State-of-the-art context-dependent, double-ended codes for processor-SDRAM off-chip interfaces require the transmitter and receiver (memory controller and SDRAM) to collaborate using the current and previously transmitted values to encode and decode data. In contrast, the memory controller can use a context-independent code to encode data stored in SDRAM and subsequently decode that data when it is retrieved, allowing the use of commodity memories. A single-ended, context-independent code is realized by assigning limited-weight codes using a frequency-based mapping technique. Experimental results show that such a code can reduce the power consumption of an uncoded off-chip interconnect by an average of 30% with less than a 0.

  • Patent number: 7966327
Abstract: A content-addressable and -searchable storage system for managing and exploring massive amounts of feature-rich data such as images, audio or scientific data, is shown. A segmentation and feature extraction unit segments data corresponding to an object into a plurality of data segments and -generates a feature vector for each data segment. A sketch construction component converts the feature vector into a compact bit-vector corresponding to the object. The system also has a similarity index having plurality of compact bit-vectors corresponding to a plurality of objects and an index insertion component for inserting a compact bit-vector corresponding to an object into the similarity index. The system may further have an indexing unit for identifying a candidate set of objects from said similarity index based upon a compact bit-vector corresponding to a query object.

  • Patent number: 7961318
Abstract: A system and method for detection and measurement of circular birefringences in materials that exhibit the Faraday effect. The method and apparatus permit detection of optical activities via the difference in the directions of propagation the left- and the right-circularly polarized light (components). A beam of light is directed at an interface formed by the optically active medium and another medium such that a difference in the angles of refraction and/or reflection and/or diffraction between the left- and the right-circularly polarized components of the light beam can be detected. The difference in the propagation directions between the two circularly polarized light components is measured on a position sensitive detector and/or is detected as an intensity difference.

  • Patent number: 7826509
Abstract: A broadly tunable single-mode infrared laser source based on semiconductor lasers. The laser source has two parts: an array of closely-spaced DFB QCLs (or other semiconductor lasers) and a controller that can switch each of the individual lasers in the array on and off, set current for each of the lasers and, and control the temperature of the lasers in the array. The device can be used in portable broadband sensors to simultaneously detect a large number of compounds including chemical and biological agents. A microelectronic controller is combined with an array of individually-addressed DFB QCLs with slightly different DFB grating periods fabricated on the same broadband (or multiple wavelengths) QCL material. This allows building a compact source providing narrow-line broadly-tunable coherent radiation in the Infrared or Terahertz spectral range (as well as in the Ultraviolet and Visible spectral ranges, using semiconductor lasers with different active region design).

  • Patent number: 7821363
Abstract: An electronic circuit is formed by closely spacing metallic gate and drain interconnects to a flexible portion of a source interconnect. A gate voltage results in electrostatic attraction and lateral mechanical movement of the flexible source interconnect portion and causes an electrical short between source and drain. VanderWaals attraction between contacting source and drain can be used to provide volatile switching (springy thicker source portion) and non-volatile switching (limp thinner source portion). In accordance with the invention, an easily fabricated, high speed, low power, radiation hard, temperature independent, integrated reconfigurable electronic circuit with embedded logic and non-volatile memory can be realized. The switch uses patterned interconnect material for its structure and can be incorporated to a 3D layered structure consisting of three dimensional interconnect in which different layers and portions of the circuits are linked through volatile and non-volatile switches.

  • Patent number: 7783459
Abstract: A parallel dynamical system for computing sparse representations of data, i.e., where the data can be fully represented in terms of a small number of non-zero code elements, and for reconstructing compressively sensed images. The system is based on the principles of thresholding and local competition that solves a family of sparse approximation problems corresponding to various sparsity metrics. The system utilizes Locally Competitive Algorithms (LCAs), nodes in a population continually compete with neighboring units using (usually one-way) lateral inhibition to calculate coefficients representing an input in an over complete dictionary.

  • Patent number: 7771384
Abstract: A trocar tube incorporating integral irrigation and aspiration capabilities with positioning control. These capabilities can be used in conjunction with endoscopic tools which can be fed through the trocar housing. Specifically, the invention can be used to clean the lens of a laparoscope while it is in place in the trocar tube to eliminate the need for removal of the laparoscope for cleansing. The trocar tube telescoping tip permits independent control of the position of irrigation and aspiration while other tools are in use. Trocar tube channels in the wall of the trocar tube enable fluids to be fed to the distal end of the trocar tube, and enable material to be aspirated from the distal end of the trocar tube. The trocar tube channels are connected to a fluid source and an aspirating device. Aspiration and fluid flow are controlled by a foot pedal or other device that allows hands-free control.
