  • Patent number: 4655814
Abstract: The composition and method are for waterways, usually closed cycle, in which algae and the like is to be killed without harm to higher animal life. The composition includes a violet dye to enhance ultraviolet light penetration from the prevailing light to enter the waterway. This ultraviolet light, with reduction in visible light, causes algae death. It also increases free oxygen, neutralizes some toxins, and reduces admission of infrared radiation. The composition includes an enzyme which digests the dead algae and similar material. The products of digestion are such as to leave clean water. A blue dye may optionally be used to hide the violet color of the water in the visible part of the spectrum.

  • Patent number: 4606365
Abstract: This buoyant blood stop valve is in the blood line to the patient to stop flow to prevent air embolism when the blood is exhausted from the oxygenator reservoir. The stop valve comprises a downwardly directed hemispherical cup next to the downwardly directed tubular inlet. The top of the cup is open to the inlet to permit free passage of air in and out of the top of the cup. The cup and inlet are formed in the upper valve body, and the lower valve body is secured thereto and faces the upper valve body. The bottom of the lower body has an outlet, and above the outlet is a circular valve seat, such as an O-ring in a recess. Above the O-ring the lower body has a curved bottom, but vanes are formed in the lower body and inwardly directed toward the outlet valve seat at the O-ring. Upper vanes adjacent the inlet are sloped toward the hemispherical cup.

  • Patent number: 4598348
Abstract: The anode of an arc lamp is supported on an arm. When the arc lamp fails, motion of the arm detects the failure and turns the current off of the arc lamp. In addition, after failure of the lamp, the arm limits motion of the anode so that it does not strike adjacent structure.

  • Patent number: 4575096
Abstract: Game apparatus comprises a plurality of playing pieces each coded to indicate its attribute and value. The attribute of each piece is one of three possible attributes and the value of each piece is one of three possible values. The three attributes and values are such that one attribute and value is superior to another attribute and value while also being inferior to the third attribute and value. In the preferred embodiment, three playing pieces of different attributes and different values are stacked to comprise a playing unit. Two players successively compare the attributes and values of the bottom-most pieces of their playing units in a number of plays in order to determine the outcome of the game.

  • Patent number: 4522227
Abstract: The fill valve is responsive to liquid level by passing vented vapor through serial orifices. The inlet flow is stopped by shifting a valve spool which is responsive to the pressure between the orifices. A pressure booster adjacent the vent outlet serves to momentarily shut off the outlet when pressure rises in the region of the second orifice to aid in shifting the main valve spool when system pressure is low.

  • Patent number: 4488727
Abstract: Game apparatus comprises a game board together with a plurality of playing pieces each coded to indicate its attribute and value. Three playing pieces of different attributes and different values are stacked to comprise a playing unit. Two players compare the attributes and values of the bottom-most piece of their playing units successively in a number of plays in order to determine the outcome of the game. The game comprises three different groups of attributes having strengths that allow a first group to be stronger than a second, the second group to be stronger than a thrid and the third group to be stronger than the first. In addition, each of the groups of attributes contains three hierarchically ranked groups of different values.

  • Patent number: 4451359
Abstract: Gold flakes and small nuggets are separated from heavy sand by fluidizing the mixture with an upwardly flowing water column having a very uniform velocity across its section. The upwardly flowing water column has sufficient flow to fluidize the suspended material but not enough to carry the heavy sand over the top of the column. Heavy sand is withdrawn from the upper portion of the fluidized mixture to leave the gold below the withdrawal point.

  • Patent number: 4435173
Abstract: Variable rate pump for insulin delivery has as its pumping unit a syringe. A motor is connected to advance the syringe and electric signal pulses are produced during syringe advance. A control system permits selection of the interval between command pulses to maintain the desired base insulin delivery rate. A separate circuit drives the motor and syringe to deliver a predetermined bolus of insulin. Alarm circuits are connected to monitor the various system requirements and signal when they are not fulfilled.

  • Patent number: 4395691
Abstract: Deflection of an electron beam from axis 28 is controlled by electromagnetic deflection saddle coils 24, 26. Interference with deflection by surrounding mass of lens 22 is overcome by compensation coils 42, 44. The deflection coils and compensation coils are shaped and sized so that their own conductive properties do not distort the deflection magnetic fields. This is accomplished by equalizing between the deflection and compensation coils, the change in magnetic field during coil current penetration and by equalizing the penetration time constants for both sets of windings.
