  • Patent number: 4193374
Abstract: In can manufacturing apparatus there is provided an overhead magnetic conveyor for transferring cans from a conveyor upon which they are coated to a conveyor upon which the cans are dried. To remove excess coating material which tends to form a bead around the lowermost edge of a can, a bath of coating material solvent is disposed adjacent to the transfer conveyor and has within it an endless belt conveyor to which cans on the overhead conveyor are caused to fall and from which those cans are subsequently returned to an overhead conveyor. The upper, can carrying course of the endless belt conveyor is disposed at a predetermined depth below the surface of solvent within the bath so that excess material accumulating on the lower portions of the cans in the coating region is removed prior to entry of the cans into the drying oven.

  • Patent number: 4193961
Abstract: A method of extruding multi-filament polypropylene yarn in which the polypropylene is extruded at a temperature below 425.degree. F., such as in the range 415.degree. F. to 350.degree. F., particularly about 400.degree. F., into a hot zone having a temperature sufficiently high to retard cooling of the extruded polypropylene yarn. The temperature of the hot zone can be within 60.degree. F. of the temperature of extrusion. The yarn is then passed through a quenching zone across which air is blown to cool the yarn. The swell value of the polypropylene can be less than 3 and its melt flow may be greater than 30. The yarn is drawn down in the hot zone and the filaments may be drawn down to an undrawn denier of less than 40.

  • Patent number: 4193962
Abstract: Apparatus and method are described for extruding filaments of thermoplastic material, particularly polypropylene, by liquid quench melt spinning in which a baffle arrangement is disposed in the quench liquid around the location where the filaments enter to reduce turbulence, vortexing, and liquid level variation. The baffle arrangement forms an opentopped box-like structure with two quench liquid inlet apertures and one quench liquid outlet aperture. Yarn guides are disposed inside this structure and the filaments, after solidifying, pass around the yarn guides and then upwards, at an angle of about 30 degrees to the horizontal, through the quench liquid outlet aperture. The passage of the filaments creates a pumping action of the quench liquid in through the two inlet apertures and out through the outlet aperture. The area of the outlet aperture is less than the sum of the areas of the inlet apertures, to create an inefficient pump.

  • Patent number: 4188873
Abstract: A piston/cylinder type element particularly suited for embodiment in a refuse compactor as the ram thereof comprises adjustable guide means for guiding the piston-like element in sliding movement within the cylinder. The guide means are adjustable to accommodate wear in the mating surfaces thereof. There is also disclosed a discharge cone for a compactor which is releasably secured to the ramhousing structure in a selected one of a plurality of positions evenly to distribute wear on the cone produced by the passage of refuse therethrough and that cone is removable from the ram housing to be replaced by a different structure, depending upon the refuse to be compacted. Additionally, the ram member of a compactor includes novel teeth elements to cut through refuse which might otherwise be wedged between adjacent surfaces of the ram and cylinder and cause jamming.

  • Patent number: 4179789
Abstract: A piston-type safety lock device, of the type comprising a cylindrical rotor journalled in a cavity of a stator. Said rotor contains a plurality of radially slidable pistons cooperating at their inner end with the notches of a key for bringing their other end flush with the periphery of said rotor. Said other end bears against the inner surface of the cavity in which the rotor is journalled and, for one angular position of the rotor, against pistons slidable in the stator and elastically biased toward the rotor. Said pistons of the stator and rotor are flat blanked members. Said pistons are disposed respectively in a single slot of the stator and in a single slot of the rotor and have rectilinear and parallel lateral edges which are in contact with the lateral edge of an adjacent piston or the end of said slot.

  • Patent number: 4178240
Abstract: A system for handling two liquid streams comprises an hydraulic circuit including a pair of receptacles each provided with movable partition means dividing it into first and second chambers. Rod means extending through a first chamber of each receptacle connects the partition means and is effective to cause reciprocation of one partition means to be repeated by the other so that as the first chamber of one receptacle is expanded, the first chamber of the other receptacle is contracted. A quantity of the first liquid is delivered alternately to the first and second chambers of one receptacle as those chambers expand. As those chambers contract first liquid is passed through conduit means from the first and second chambers of said one receptacle to the first and second chambers, respectively, of said other receptacle.
