Abstract: 2-Hydroxy-3-methylcyclopent-2-en-1-one was synthesized in a five-step synthesis starting from 2-methyl-1,3-butadiene. Novel intermediate steps include the hot tube isomerization of 1,1-dihalo-2-methyl-2-vinylcyclopropane to give 1-methyl-4,4-dihalocyclopent-1-ene, hydrolysis to 3-methyl-2-cyclopenten-1-one, epoxidation of the latter using a phase transfer catalyst, followed by catalyzed isomerization to produce 2-hydroxy-3-methylcyclopent-2-en-1-one in high overall yield.
Abstract: A process for producing leach-resistant consolidate from the slack sludge precipitated from the flocculating of dilute aqueous latex paint waste is shown. It comprises: rapidly heating said slack sludge with agitation to a temperature which at least approaches the boiling point of the water present in said sludge; settling the resulting heated mixture into a consolidate fraction and a serum fraction; and separating said fractions. Such consolidate can be used for landfill, structural units, or dispersed as a component of a paint.

Abstract: Polydentate phosphonium salts, prepared by reacting a polydentate phosphine containing two or more trivalent phosphorous atoms with various mono or difunctional organic halides, are effective agents for treating glass and specifically glass capillary chromatographic columns.
Abstract: A new concept in painting various substrates is implemented by rectangular container/applicator packages having the capability of storing solid paint and other dimensionally stable materials while additionally functioning as a useful applicator. Such applicators are advantageous in that they allow painting without conventional brushes, rollers and similar implements and are readily disposable.
Abstract: Phosphonium salts are prepared by reacting polydentate phosphines containing two or more trivalent phosphorus atoms with alkyl or aralkyl halides. Treatment of glass surfaces and glass capillary columns with these salts substantially eliminates tailing of peaks and allow the high temperature separation and characterization of polar compounds by gas chromatography at temperatures of 300.degree. C.
Abstract: Certain terpenylaminoalkanol compounds have been found to be selective piscicides useful in controlling fish species populations including carp and white sucker.
Abstract: New dehydrotocopherols, namely cis- and trans- 3',4'-dehydrotocopherol; cis- and trans- 4',5'-dehydrotocopherol; and 4',4'-a-dehydrotocopherol, and new didehydrotocopherols, namely cis- and trans- 3',4'-11',12'-didehydrotocopherol; cis- and trans- 4',5'-11',12'-didehydrotocopherol; and 4',4'a-11',12'-didehydrotocopherol, are useful intermediates in the preparation of Vitamin E.These intermediates are prepared by reacting trimethylhydroquinone under acid catalysis with certain C.sub.20 intermediates, namely: ##STR1## where R represnts a 3,7-dimethyloctyl or a 3,7-dimethyl-6-octenyl radical and X is halogen, hydroxyl, acetate, C.sub.1-4 alkanoate, C.sub.3-4 alkenoate, aralkenoate and benzoate.
Abstract: Solid paint compositions having dimensional stability based on ion bonding of discrete particles are obtained by reacting stabilized non-aqueous dispersions of certain resins having acid group functionality with 100-500 mole percent of metallic hydroxide, based on acid, dissolved in a high dielectric polar solvent.

Abstract: Silica flatting agents having improved flatting and settling characteristics and which impart improved mar resistance to certain coatings are prepared by treating a silica hydrogel in the absence of dispersion or emulsifying agents with up to 14 parts by weight of specific mixtures of microcrystalline waxes and synthetic waxes in the respective ratios of from 1:1.5 to 1:12.

Abstract: Dimensionally stable solid paints formed by interaction of certain polymers having acid group functionality with a substantial excess of a solution of ionic cross-linking reactants in a polar solvent are especially useful for the interior decorating and protection of structural components including wood, wall board, plaster, plasterboard and similar surfaces.
Abstract: Polyester-urethane polymers, prepared from the reaction of specific molar ratios of diisocyanates with specific mixtures of polyesterdiols, glycols, triols and tetraols, and having 4-10 reactive isocyanate groups are further reacted with hydroxyalkyl acrylates through the free isocyanate functionality to provide oligomers having from about 4-10 acrylates units per each mole unit of polyurethane chain. Such polymers when crosslinked under ultraviolet radiation in the presence of photosensitizers, specific reactive monofunctional acrylate solvents and multifunctional acrylate cross-linking agents cure without air inhibition to yield superior "wet look" finishes especially useful for coating metal, wood and floor tile.
Abstract: Certain N-(C.sub.2-4 haloalkanoyl) oxazolidines having the 4-carbon atom valences satisfied by certain alkylene groups, thus forming with the respective ring-carbon a spirocycloaliphatic group containing from 5 to 12 carbon atoms, are selective herbicides for crop protection.
