  • Patent number: 4359586
Abstract: 2-Hydroxy-3-methylcyclopent-2-en-1-one was synthesized in a five-step synthesis starting from 2-methyl-1,3-butadiene. Novel intermediate steps include the hot tube isomerization of 1,1-dihalo-2-methyl-2-vinylcyclopropane to give 1-methyl-4,4-dihalocyclopent-1-ene, hydrolysis to 3-methyl-2-cyclopenten-1-one, epoxidation of the latter using a phase transfer catalyst, followed by catalyzed isomerization to produce 2-hydroxy-3-methylcyclopent-2-en-1-one in high overall yield.

  • Patent number: 4312759
Abstract: A process for producing leach-resistant consolidate from the slack sludge precipitated from the flocculating of dilute aqueous latex paint waste is shown. It comprises: rapidly heating said slack sludge with agitation to a temperature which at least approaches the boiling point of the water present in said sludge; settling the resulting heated mixture into a consolidate fraction and a serum fraction; and separating said fractions. Such consolidate can be used for landfill, structural units, or dispersed as a component of a paint.

  • Patent number: 4209554
Abstract: Phosphonium salts are prepared by reacting polydentate phosphines containing two or more trivalent phosphorus atoms with alkyl or aralkyl halides. Treatment of glass surfaces and glass capillary columns with these salts substantially eliminates tailing of peaks and allow the high temperature separation and characterization of polar compounds by gas chromatography at temperatures of 300.degree. • Patent number: 4072770
Abstract: Polyester-urethane polymers, prepared from the reaction of specific molar ratios of diisocyanates with specific mixtures of polyesterdiols, glycols, triols and tetraols, and having 4-10 reactive isocyanate groups are further reacted with hydroxyalkyl acrylates through the free isocyanate functionality to provide oligomers having from about 4-10 acrylates units per each mole unit of polyurethane chain. Such polymers when crosslinked under ultraviolet radiation in the presence of photosensitizers, specific reactive monofunctional acrylate solvents and multifunctional acrylate cross-linking agents cure without air inhibition to yield superior "wet look" finishes especially useful for coating metal, wood and floor tile.
