    Abstract: A brake unit having a hydrodynamic retarder providing brake torque proportional to speed and inlet pressure, and a friction brake providing brake torque proportional to net brake pressure, the brake apply pressure minus retarder inlet pressure. The controls have a brake demand valve providing a brake demand pressure. A retarder valve is biased by brake demand pressure from brake-off position to brake-on position for switching the retarder circuit to fill the retarder and to connect low and high speed regulator valves to regulate retarder inlet pressure respectively to increase in the low speed range and to decrease in the high speed range with increasing speed, and to limit retarder inlet pressure proportionally to brake demand. The controls, in the low speed range, provide friction brake apply pressure proportional to brake demand, so the friction brake net apply pressure and torque decrease to zero and retarder torque increases as speed increases.

    Abstract: A transmission having a torque converter, lockup clutch, and a 5-speed planetary transmission having four planetary gearsets and six frictiondrive-establishing devices combined to provide five forward speed range drives having a large total gear ratio step, and a reverse drive having a moderate and a high gear ratio. The 1st or primary gearset, with the primary input to the sun gear, the ring gear braked, and carrier output, provides 1st range drive having the largest torque multiplication gear ratio. The 2nd, 3rd and 4th gearsets, the secondary gearsets, are used to provide a secondary input having decreasing torque multiplication gear ratios, to the ring gear of the 1st gearset which, with the primary input to the sun gear, provides 2nd through 5th range drives having decreasing gear ratios. The gear ratio steps between 1st, 2nd, and 3rd ranges are wide, and between 3rd, 4th, and 5th ranges are very close.

    Abstract: A multispeed transmission having an automatic shift control system having an automatic shift valve which is biased for upshift by a force increasing with output speed of the transmission and is biased for downshift by a force increasing concurrently with torque demand, to provide upshifts at speeds increasing with torque demand and downshifts at lower speeds. The shift valve controls the supply of shift fluid pressure to the ratio-engaging devices to establish low and high ratio drives. A regulator valve increases the shift fluid pressure with an increasing lagging torque demand signal. A modulator valve is controlled by an engine fuel feed or throttle to provide a concurrent torque demand signal pressure concurrent with throttle movement for the shift valve. The lagging torque demand signal is more concurrent with engine torque and power, such as the gasifier pressure of a gas turbine engine, or the supercharger pressure of an internal combustion engine.

    Abstract: A hydrostatic transmission, especially for a steer drive of a propulsion and steer drive transmission, having a variable displacement pump, a fixed displacement motor, and a pump displacement control, and including a low pressure fluid source supplying the charging and lubrication systems of the hydrostatic transmission and a high pressure source. The high pressure source, in a normal range of low hydrostatic power pressure values, provides control pressure regulated in proportion to high hydrostatic power pressure to meet the pressure requirements of the pump displacement control which increase with high hydrostatic power pressure. In an abnormal and lower range of low hydrostatic pressure values, the control pressure is regulated to decrease to zero as the low hydrostatic power pressure decreases to a minimum operating pressure value.

    Abstract: A multiclutch drive having an input connected in series by a centrifugally engaged clutch, an intermediate drive and a spring engaged manually disengaged friction clutch to drive the output and a one way clutch between the intermediate drive and input which is engaged when the intermediate drive speed exceeds the input speed. Manual disengagement of the friction clutch provides positive neutral. For normal drive, manual engagement permits the spring engagement of the friction clutch and manually increasing engine throttle and engine speed engages the centrifugal clutch for normal vehicle drive. For a push start the friction clutch is manually disengaged while bringing the vehicle up to starting speed and then engaged to drive the intermediate drive to engage the one way clutch to drive the input for engine starting. The clutches are structurally arranged with the centrifugal clutch hub and the inner race of the one way clutch fixed to the input shaft.

    Abstract: The power train has a manual throttle controlled gas turbine engine having a high no load idle speed and a transmission having a low capacity fluid coupling and a variable capacity slipping friction clutch connected in parallel to the input of a multiratio gear unit for driving a vehicle. During engine idle with the vehicle stationary, when the gear unit is in neutral, the fluid coupling is unloaded to permit the engine to operate and drive the accessories at a high no load idle speed. When the gear unit is placed in a drive ratio, the fluid coupling is stalled loading the engine and reducing the no load idle speed to a regulated lower drive starting idle speed range, to reduce the inertia energy level for smooth drive starting clutch engagement and to maintain the engine output speed in a proper vehicle accessory operating idle speed range.

    Abstract: A multiratio powershift transmission having fluid operated drive devices including a forward clutch with an apply chamber supplied with fluid apply pressure to engage the clutch for forward drives and exhausted to disengage the clutch for reverse drive. The apply chamber is in a housing rotating at input speed during forward and reverse drive. In forward drive, a dump valve mounted on the rotating housing is biased closed by a spring, static fluid apply pressure, and centrifugal pressure head, in the rated input speed range. At a higher speed, centrifugal force on the dump valve element opens the dump valve to exhaust the apply chamber and disengage forward drive. In reverse drive, the dump valve is biased closed only by the spring which at idle speed closes the dump valve, and at a low speed used in reverse drive, centrifugal force opens the dump valve to flush the dump valve during reverse drive.

    Abstract: A method of edge coiling annular steel plates for transmission friction plate devices in which straight tapered strip steel stock with prime spline tangs on one edge are edge rolled into open annular steel plates with finished spline tangs leaving a gap between the unjoined free ends. The strip steel stock is slit into straight flat strips having a width double the total face width of the annular plate. The flat double width strip is rolled to provide a symmetrical tapered double width strip having a central thick flat portion and on each side a symmetrically tapered portion with thin edges. The double width tapered strip is blanked in the central portion to form uniformly spaced prime spline tangs each having a central recess and slit to divide the double width strip into two single width tapered strips with the recessed prime spline tangs on the thick edge.
