Abstract: 2,4- AND 2,6-Dinitrotoluenes are separated from mixtures thereof with small mounts of isomeric dinitrotoluene impurities by suspending the mixture in an aqueous solution containing a small amount of an alkali metal disulfide. The isomeric dinitrotoluene impurities are thereby converted to products soluble in the aqueous solution from which the 2,4- and 2,6-dinitrotoluenes can be recovered in excellent yield.
