Abstract: An apparatus for in situ testing of a soil sample includes an elongate body having a hollow core and an open end, an upper barrier or means for forming an upper barrier within soil across the hollow core, and means for forming a lower barrier within soil across the hollow core such that a sample zone is defined with the hollow core between the upper and lower barriers. A fluid supply means delivers a fluid to the sample zone; and a fluid exit means removes the fluid from the sample zone.
Abstract: A fluid monitoring apparatus for monitoring a fluid in a fluid mains supply, the apparatus comprising means for connecting the apparatus to the mains supply, a testing chamber, a fluid tester, testing a variable of a fluid in the testing chamber and a purger for purging a volume of fluid from the testing chamber which volume of fluid is substantially larger than the volume of the testing chamber, thereby replacing the fluid in the testing chamber with a new fluid volume.
Abstract: A stretch-forming apparatus includes a main frame which carries a die enclosure between jaw assemblies. An insulated die is mounted in the enclosure. A method of forming a component includes placing a workpiece in the enclosure, heating the workpiece to a working temperature using electrical resistance heating, and then stretching the workpiece against the die. The method is particularly useful for titanium workpieces.

Abstract: An alignment device including physical and optical alignment members for aligning an impact point of a golf ball in order to correlate the perceived alignment of the ball by a golfer with the actual direction of impact required to maximize the probability of the ball traveling in the desired direction.
Abstract: An apparatus for mixing material in a container includes a platform mounted for simultaneous movement on at least two axes and for supporting a container containing material to be mixed. A motor can be operatively associated with the platform to move the platform on the two axes. A container holding assembly having a vertical extent can be carried by the platform, and is moveable between a closed position in which the holding assembly is positioned proximate the container to retain the container on the platform during mixing operations, and an open position in which the holding assembly is positioned away from the container so that the container can be removed from the platform without lifting the container over the vertical extent of the holding assembly. The platform can be contained within a housing having a low profile opening such that the container can be removed without elevating the container.

Abstract: A frame is mounted to a front surface of a previously mounted mirror so that recesses in the back side of the frame receive protruding portions of fasteners which attach the frame to a supporting structure. Guide structures are temporarily mounted to the front surface of the mirror to facilitate the mounting of the frame to the mirror. The guide structures are used to suspend the frame in a position forward of the mirror. Then, while the frame is suspended by the guide structures, the frame is pushed toward the mirror so that the frame slides along the guide structures. As a result, adhesive strips, which are mounted to the back of the frame, engage the front surface of the mirror and become adhered thereto, so that the frame is mounted to the front surface of the mirror by the adhesive strips.
Abstract: A fan assembly for a gas turbine engine includes a turbine rotor adapted to be disposed aft of a core of the gas turbine engine; a row of turbine blades carried by the rotor, each turbine blade extending from the rotor to a tip, the turbine blades adapted to extract energy from a stream of pressurized combustion gases generated by the core; and at least two rows of axially-spaced apart, radially-extending fan blades carried by the row of turbine blades for rotation therewith.

Abstract: A one-way vision perforated display panel that includes a transparent protective envelope having at least one open side edge and an adhesive applied to at least a portion of an outwardly-facing side of the envelope defined by a front sheet for adhering the envelope to an inner surface of a transparent support panel, and a one-way vision, perforated sheet having a display image on one side for being inserted into the protective envelope through the at least one open side edge with the display image visible through the outwardly-facing side of the envelope and the transparent support panel.
Abstract: A linear friction welding head apparatus for dual axis forging, the apparatus including three sets of orthogonal actuators for providing X-, Y-, and Z-planes of apparatus movement for providing Y-axis oscillation, a first forge load along a first forge axis, and a second forge load along a second forge axis. A method for dual axis forging for welding including providing a welding head for applying first and second forge loads along X- and Z-forge axes to weld at more than one interface. The forge loads may be applied at right angles to each other and have magnitudes corresponding to weld interface length.

Abstract: A meal tray for a passenger seat includes a removable insert. The insert carries a sheet of graphics or advertisements in a protected, viewable position when the meal tray is stowed. Tamper-resistant latches secure the insert to the meal tray.
Abstract: An end protector link (60) captures and retains first and second elongate link pins of a multi-link conveyor chain, and includes an outer wall (41) defining a protective bearing surface, a spacer wall (62) carried by the outer wall, and an inner wall (63) carried by the spacer wall in spaced-apart relation to the outer wall and having a retainer aperture (75) for capturing and retaining respective enlarged heads (13) of the first and second link pins (12) between facing surfaces of the outer wall and the inner wall. The protective bearing surface of the outer wall is adapted for being engaged by wearing surfaces past which the conveyor moves to protect the enlarged heads (13) of the link pins to exposure to the wearing surfaces.
Abstract: A turbine blade with a tip squealer and method of rebuilding a turbine blade for a gas turbine engine. The blade is of the type including an airfoil having first and second spaced-apart sidewalls defining an interior void and joined at a leading edge and a trailing edge. The first and second sidewalls extending from a root disposed adjacent the dovetail to a tip cap for channeling combustion gases, and a squealer tip including at least one tip rib extending outwardly from the tip cap. The method includes the steps of removing the squealer tip, including the at least one rib tip, from the tip cap and adding new material to the tip cap to serve as a new squealer tip. A plurality of spaced-apart notches is formed in the new material between the leading edge and the trailing edge of the airfoil. At least one hole is formed in each notch communicating with the interior void of the airfoil for channeling cooling air from the interior void of the airfoil to thereby form a squealer tip.
Abstract: A cooled shroud assembly for a gas turbine engine having a longitudinal centerline includes at least one arcuate shroud segment surrounding a row of rotating turbine blades. The shroud segment has a forward flange, an aft flange defining an axially-facing aft edge, and an inwardly-facing flowpath surface, and the shroud segment lacks cooling holes for cooling the aft flange or the aft edge. At least one stationary turbine nozzle is disposed axially next to the shroud segment and includes an airfoil-shaped airfoil and an arcuate outer band disposed at a radially outer end of the airfoil and positioned axially adjacent to the shroud. At least one cooling hole is formed in the outer band in fluid communication with a source of cooling air. The cooling hole is positioned so as to direct a flow of cooling air against the shroud segment.
