Abstract: Rapid identification of different species of microorganism selected from fungi and yeast like algae is accomplished by culturing the microorganism for several hours under normal conditions on a non-inhibitory mycological medium which stimulates the microorganism to make characteristic enzymes by which the microorganism can be identified, distributing the culture (in suspension) onto several supports containing different substrates which are capable of reacting with the enzymes so produced by the different species of microorganisms; and rapidly incubating the admixture to produce a distinctly colored or colorable reaction product.

Abstract: An improved microbiological test tray is described which are provided with fasteners so that two or more of the trays may be joined together for ease in inoculation, incubation, lyophilization and reading. In another aspect of the invention an improved tray structure is described which provides openings for the flow of vapor during the lyophilization step so that a greater number of trays may be lyophilized at the same time and also that lyophilization may be carried out in a shorter period of time due to the improved vapor flow. In another aspect of the invention an improved test card is described in which the API 20 test strip is reshaped into a card of two rows of ten cupules conforming to the same pattern as other frequently used test trays. A holder tray is provided for the card and the holder is provided with connecting fasteners so that it and the test card may be joined into one or more additional test trays for ease in inoculation, incubation and reading.
Abstract: A rabies vaccine composition is disclosed which comprises a sterilized suspension of proteineous suckling mice or rat brain particles of injectable particle size laden with an amount of inactivated rabies virus which is equivalent to a virus titer of at least 10.sup.5.0 to about 10.sup.6 MLD.sub.50 per 0.1 milliliter thereof at a brain tissue concentration of from about 0.3% to about 5.0% by weight, in physiological buffer solution having a pH of between about 7.5 and about 8.0 and comprising an amount dissolved therein, of between 0.02 and 0.08, preferably 0.04, moles per liter, of a buffer composition comprising a mixture of an organic base formula ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 each are CH.sub.2, C.sub.2 H.sub.4 or C.sub.3 H.sub.6, preferably C.sub.2 H.sub.4 combined with between 0.03 and 0.12, preferably 0.06 moles per liter of its corresponding salt, preferable sodium salt. The presence of ethylene maleic anhydride enhances the effectiveness of the composition.

Abstract: A composition is used as a reagent in a method for measuring Antistreptolysin O (ASO) in a blood sample. The composition contains Streptolysin O (SO) at a pH outside the range of its hemolytic activity, e.g., outside the pH range of 5-9. At that pH the SO is reversibly inactivated while maintaining its hemolytic capacity. The composition is employed to measure ASO by mixing one or more samples of non-hemolyzed blood or serum with one or more known quantities of the composition with a known hemolytic capacity, incubating each mixture to allow reaction of any ASO in the sample with the SO, restoring the hemolytic activity of the SO by adjustment of pH to permit lysis and detecting the presence or absence of lysis in each sample.
Abstract: Disclosed are new methods of using 1-(4-chlorobenzoyl)-5-methoxy-2-methyl-1H-indole-3-acetic acid, or a therapeutically acceptable salt thereof with an organic or inorganic base for the treatment of complications associated with diabetes mellitus. The compound inhibits lens aldose reductase in a diabetic mammal.
