Patent number: 4111906Abstract: This invention relates to a novel aromatic diamine and more particularly to the use of said diamine for the preparation of thermally stable high-molecular weight polymers including, for example, polyamides, polyamideimides, polyimides, and the like. This diamine is obtained by reacting a stoichometric amount of a disodium salt of 2,2-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl) hexafluoropropane with 4-chloronitrobenzene to obtain an intermediate, 2,2-bis[4-(4-nitrophenoxy)phenyl] hexafluoropropane, which is reduced to the corresponding 2,2-bis[4-(4-aminophenoxy)phenyl] hexafluoropropane.Type: GrantFiled: July 19, 1976Date of Patent: September 5, 1978Assignee: TRW Inc.Inventors: Robert J. Patent number: 4032546Abstract: A monomeric bis (benzil) composition is produced by reacting furfural with an aromatic dialdehyde, the product having the structure: ##STR1## wherein R is a difunctional aromatic radical, R' is a hydrogen, a phenylene, or a furan radical, and R" is a hydrogen or or an alkyl substituent. These monomers are used to prepare cross-linked polyquinoxaline resins which have enhanced thermal and mechanical properties. Polymerization of these bis(benzil) monomers occurs by the reaction of the carbonyl groups with a tetraamine monomer. Cross-linking of the resulting polymers chains is accomplished by reaction of the furan end-cap group in a Diels-Alder reaction with a bis(dieneophile) substantially aromatic in composition.Type: GrantFiled: May 12, 1975Date of Patent: June 28, 1977Assignee: TRW Inc.Inventors: Robert J. Patent number: 3992685Abstract: A chemical laser including a laser pump which is relativey lightweight with no moving parts is provided. This produces a low pressure, regenerable, closed system for treating laser cavity exhaust gases to remove (i.e., pump) them from the system. The exhaust gases which emerge from the laser cavity of the chemical laser are pumped by reacting them preferably with titanium, titanium-zirconium alloys, zirconium, tantalum, etc. These gases include hydrogen, deuterium and their halides, the halogens, oxygen, CO.sub.2, nitrogen and H.sub.2 O. This obviates the requirements for heavy equipment normally employed to produce a high vacuum in the laser cavity.Type: GrantFiled: March 18, 1976Date of Patent: November 16, 1976Assignee: TRW Systems & EnergyInventors: John R. Patent number: 3992348Abstract: Polymetal acrylates, permanently filled with an excess of a polyvalent metal carbonate and saturated with water, exhibit properties ranging from moldable elastomers to moldable clays. Polyvalent metal carbonates may be selected from zinc carbonate, cadmium carbonate, cobalt carbonate, calcium carbonate, magnesium carbonate, strontium carbonate, barium carbonate, copper carbonate, lead carbonate, nickel carbonate, iron carbonate, and manganese carbonate. Water, or water and water miscible organic liquids (such as alcohols or ketones which are plasticizers for the polymer) provide flexible compounds with integrity, while removal of the liquid provides hard plaster-like compounds. Rewetting the compounds provides the original maleable properties.Type: GrantFiled: September 21, 1970Date of Patent: November 16, 1976Assignee: TRW Systems and EnergyInventors: John F. Jones, Bernard Dubrow

Patent number: 3975363Abstract: Linear polymers are produced by the reaction of an olefinic end-capped bis(imide) or bis(amide) compound, i.e. a dieneophile with a furfuryl or furan end-capped bis(imide) or bis(amide) compound, i.e. a diene. These linear polymers have an alicyclic endooxy linkage repeated throughout the polymer backbone chain where the furfuryl end-cap combines with the olefin end-cap by Diels-Alder reaction. The linear polymer is converted to a higher performance polymer by heating in the range of 200.degree. to 400.degree.C whereupon the endooxy linkage is aromatized in situ. The resins so prepared are suitable for use in severe environments at temperatures up to 350.degree.C.Type: GrantFiled: February 14, 1975Date of Patent: August 17, 1976Assignee: TRW Inc.Inventor: Robert J. Jones

Patent number: 3965125Abstract: Monomeric high molecular weight dianhydrides or tetraacids can be produced by the nucleophilic coupling of a halo substituted phthalimides acid and an aliphatic or aromatic compound having polyfunctional groups capable of reacting with the halo moiety of the phthalinide followed by hydrolysis and dehydration. Specifically, 4-chlorophthalate sodium salt is converted to an imide to reduce side reactions with the carboxylic acid groups prior to reaction with 4,4'-disodiumdiphenylene oxide sulfone or 2,2-di (4-sodium phenoxide) propane. After the reaction of the imide and the sulfone or propane compounds, the diimide formed is converted to the corresponding dianhydride.Type: GrantFiled: February 8, 1971Date of Patent: June 22, 1976Assignee: TRW Inc.Inventor: Robert A. Meyers

Patent number: 3957507Abstract: This invention relates to high-temperature, oxidation-resistant refractory materials or alloys and to a method of preparing said alloys which have an outer skin containing at least one noble metal, e.g., platinum, and/or silver, in amounts greater than the amount of noble metal present in the alloy beneath said skin. The alloy comprises at least one noble metal selected from the group consisting of platinum, gold, silver, rhodium, iridium and palladium. The noble metal is added in amounts ranging from 0.1 to 15% by weight of the total composition to hafnium or to hafnium containing from about 0 to 50% by weight of zirconium, and heated to temperatures ranging from about 1000.degree.F to 3800.degree.F in an oxidizing atmosphere.Type: GrantFiled: June 14, 1972Date of Patent: May 18, 1976Assignee: TRW Inc.Inventors: Jack L. Blumenthal, John R. Ogren, Marvin Appel

Patent number: 3953544Abstract: A low temperature curing polymeric adhesive composition may be made by reacting an amino alcohol having between 1 and 3 amino groups and between 2 and 5 hydroxyl groups with a stoichiometric amount of a carboxylic acid or derivative. Free radical catalysts and accelerators may be added to speed the cure of the adhesive. These adhesive resins can be cured at or near ambient room temperature and are highly desired for fabrication of bonded materials possessing long fatigue life because of reduced stresses that might be induced at higher cure temperatures. A generalized formula may be illustrated as follows: ##EQU1## WHERE R" may be hydrogen, alkyl, or cycloalkyl; R' may be hydrogen or alkyl; R is an alkyl; R.sub.1 may be hydrogen, an alkyl, or phenyl; m is an integer from 1 to 3; and n is an integer from 1 to 2.Type: GrantFiled: May 10, 1974Date of Patent: April 27, 1976Assignee: TRW Inc.Inventors: Robert J. Jones, Howard E. Green, Robert W. Vaughan
