  • Patent number: 4667298
Abstract: Method and apparatus for filtering high data rate signals, using a digital type filter, without requiring an analog-to-digital converter or the multiplicaton of digital signals. The incoming signal is wideband filtered and then hard limited to produce a constant amplitude signal having either a first or second instantaneous value. The constant amplitude signal is periodically sampled and stored in a multi-bit digital shift register as logic 1 or 0 signals. In one embodiment, the logic 1 or 0 signals stored in the shift register bits are periodically read out, multiplied by respective weighting constants, and summed to provide a filtered analog output signal. In another embodiment, the combination of logic 1 and 0 signals stored in the shift register are periodically sampled and used to address a memory, which outputs a digital signal which is the calculated value of weighted sum for that shift register combination.

  • Patent number: 4649798
Abstract: The present gun silencer includes an internal cardioid-shaped cavity which utilizes the principles of wave mechanics to attenuate the sound of a gun firing without contacting the projectile. The shock wave from a firing is totally internally reflected thereby confining and attenuating the sound from a gun firing. The silencer cavity is shaped in a manner guiding and concentrating shock waves from a gun firing to an exit port at which sound-absorbing material is present.

  • Patent number: 4649796
Abstract: A method and apparatus for setting a time delay value in an electronic fuze of a projectile exiting the muzzle of a gun barrel, in which a single transmitter coil concentrically mounted to the gun muzzle is utilized both to sense the presence of the projectile at the gun muzzle and to inductively transmit a radio frequency signal having a duration proportional to the fuze time delay value to a receiver coil disposed on the projectile. The transmitter coil is energized from a radio frequency oscillator before the projectile is fired. As the front end of the projectile begins to emerge from the gun muzzle, its presence is detected by a change in the transmitter coil impedance, and the transmitter coil is automatically deenergized.

  • Patent number: 4643545
Abstract: A reflecting asphere of revolution for reflecting light radiation having a wavelength in the range from 0.2 microns to 10 microns, emanating from or passing through a focus into an omnidirectional planar or conical fan beam of uniform thickness. The reflecting surface is generated by rotating an outer segment of a parabola about a line intersecting the parabola axis at its focus. In one application, this reflecting surface is used to equally disperse optical power emanating from the end face of an optical fiber to a plurality of solar cells. In another application, two of these reflecting aspheres of revolution are utilized to create an annular zone in a system for detecting objects, such as aircraft, entering the annular zone. Folding mirrors may be utilized to make systems using this reflecting asphere of revolution more compact. Also, truncated conical reflecting surfaces may be used with these reflecting aspheres of revolution to generate certain beams, such as annular cylindrical beams.

  • Patent number: 4630764
Abstract: A device for cleaving fiber optic cable includes a grooved drum about which a cable is reeved mounted on a base which includes clamps for the cable ends. A cleaving break is provided beneath a section of the cable in the periphery of the drum which is expandable to vary the cleaving break dimensions. In the cleaving break is mounted a device for circumferentially scoring the cable which is then cleaved at the score mark by forcibly expanding the drum and thus the size of the cleaving break. Mechanism is provided for effecting such expansion.

  • Patent number: 4621893
Abstract: An optical scan device for use in a satellite orbiting the earth. It compes a platform rotating about an axis. A first periscope which has a longitudinal axis and first and second mirrors is attached to the platform such that the first mirror is positioned with its optical axis coincident with the axis of rotation of the platform. A second periscope which has a longitudinal axis and third and fourth mirrors is pivotally attached to the platform such that the second periscope is pivoted in line with the optical centers of the second mirror and the third mirror, and such that the third mirror is in optical communication with the second mirror. Means are provided for pivoting the second periscope through an angle of .alpha..degree. as the platform rotates about its axis of rotation.

  • Patent number: 4611993
Abstract: Apparatus for testing and evaluating live fire weapons systems. A vertical rojection screen is located downrange from an operator controlled weapons system which launches an ordnance tracer projectile intended to intercept a target. The target is a bright laser spot projected and steered along the projection screen. The projection screen has a retroreflective surface and is constructed out of disposable panels. The projectile is detected as it approaches the laser spot target, and apparatus is provided for scoring the projectile within a specified area around the laser spot target.

  • Patent number: 4602510
Abstract: A device for measuring the rotational speed of a rotating object in which a tream of fluid from a back pressure sensor is directed at a chopper wheel attached to the rotating object. The output of the back pressure sensor varies as the chopper wheel rotates. The number of variations in pressure per unit time is directly proportional to the rotational speed of the rotating object.

  • Patent number: 4577518
Abstract: The invention provides apparatus for injecting a sample of a fluid into a sealed pouch. The apparatus includes a framework and an injection needle for coupling to a source of the fluid to supply the fluid to the pouch. A drive mechanism is attached to the framework and is coupled to the injection needle for operation to move the needle between a withdrawn position and an engagement position with the needle moving along a first line of travel. A hopper is attached to the framework for containing a plurality of pouches in a stack, and a transport mechanism is attached to the framework and has a shuttle moveable along a second line of travel at right angles to the first line of travel. The shuttle moves pouches one at a time from the hopper to a position in line with the needle to receive the sample from the needle with the needle in the engagement position.

  • Patent number: 4553068
Abstract: A simple method and apparatus are disclosed for producing high power gigat level millimeter radiation from an intensely oscillating relativistic turbulent electron plasma created in and beyond the gap of a high voltage diode configuration. The diode is comprised of an explosive cathode emitter and an extended anode structure connected to the inner and outer conductors, respectively, of a high voltage pulse line under conditions of space charge saturation. The gap spacing and voltage determine the dominate mode of the turbulent longitudinal waves which are directly converted into free transverse waves polarized parallel to the electron beam. A simple coaxial reflector-antenna system is also utilized to direct and focus the resultant radiation.
