    Abstract: A blend of an EPDM made with VNB instead of ENB and specified melt viscosity reducers is imbued with a unique ability to form a processable blend with a polyolefin phase in which PE is present in a major amount by weight relative to PP. In the substantially fully cured vulcanizate (TPV) of the blend the ratio of PE to pEPDM is in the range from more than 1:3 up to about 1:0.6. This blend is made processable with less than 200 phr of a processing oil in presently available commercial processing equipment by using an inert melt viscosity reducer which is compatible with the pEPDM and PE phases without being substantially miscible in either. A preferred melt viscosity reducer is chosen from (a) a polyolefin selected from the group consisting of isotactic poly(1-butene), ethylene-co-1-butene, propene-co-1-butene and ethylene-co-propene-co-1-butene; (b) oils and waxes having a solubility parameter in the range from about 19.5 to 21.

    Abstract: A weatherseal or belt-line seal for a vehicle is formed by extrusion of an olefin-based thermoplastic elastomer or vulcanizate (first TPV) as an elongate body of arbitrary length and cross-section. The cross-section is adapted for use in a particular location in the opening of a structure to be protected against wind and rain, for example around the glass of a window in a vehicle's door, or around the opening (at the periphery) in which the door is closed, so as to present at least one sealing surface against which the glass or door may be abutted to provide a seal against the elements. A slip-coating is co-extruded onto one or more longitudinal sealing surfaces of the body; the slip-coating contains a novel compatibilizer which allows thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) to be chemically bonded to a graft copolymer of polypropylene (PP) and a compound having two anhydride groups. The reaction product of the grafted PP and the TPU effects a thermal bond with the sealing surface of the body.

    Abstract: A thermoplastic vulcanizate (TPV) is produced by melt blending until the volume fraction of dispersed rubber particles is greater than 0.5 preferably from 0.55 to 0.95, the remaining being the dispersed continuous plastic phase in a manner so as to develop a morphology which generates optimum elastic recovery. The majority (by volume) of large rubber particles are adjacent a small particle which is separated from one or more large particles by a critically thin, less than 0.1 $G(m)m thick, ligament of deformable plastic. When the majority of large particles evidence this morphology, as seen in a transmission electron microscope (TEM) photomicrograph, the TPV exhibits unexpectedly higher elastic recovery than if the ligaments were thicker. The foregoing is simulated in a micromechanical model which confirms, and in retrospect, predicts the observed actual elastic recovery of the TPV.

The gap allows more uniform heat transfer from the bottom of the crucible than is provided when there is no gap; the gap provides a controllable temperature gradient between the interior and exterior of the crucible. To direct propagation of the growth of a macrocrystal the bottom of the crucible is provided with at least one set of multiple grooves in parallel relationship with each other. Preferably a second set of multiple grooves in parallel relationship with each other intersect the grooves of the first set at an angle chosen depending upon the lattice structure of the macrocrystal to be grown. A macrocrystal grown in a crucible with twin sets of angulated grooves produces single crystals.

    Abstract: A wheeled container is constructed so as to be demountably secured to a cargo carrier assembly (or “carrier”) which is externally carried at the rear of a sports utility vehicle or truck. The carrier includes a support beam to which the container is secured by attachment latches on its rigid base. Two of the attachment latches are pivot latches, allowing the container to be pivotably disposed on the support beam without lifting wheels of the container off the ground. In one embodiment, the container comprises a frameless rigid tub adapted to be secured to the support beam; in another the container comprises a framework of elongated rigid struts, e.g. of metal tubing which may be collapsible within which is secured a rectangular receptacle or “sack” of flexible material. Only a portion of the base of the container is directly supported on the support beam, or supported on pivot pins secured to the base.

The active cover plate is so termed because an active load is embedded within it. The exterior of the body is provided with at least a pair of terminals for connection to a building's current supply. A pair of opposed spring-strips embedded in the plate are positioned so as to protrude rearward from the plate and contact terminals on the device. The spring-strips are connected to terminals of the active load. Contact of the spring-strips against the terminals is good enough to provide the active load with the current it needs.

    Abstract: A drupe which is infested with a larva of a moth or larvae of other insects, and is contaminated with related excretions, referred to as a “frass”, in a central zone within the drupe, is cleansed with a longitudinally bored pitting knife mounted in the pitting head of a conventional pitting machine. A source of cleansing fluid is connected to the bore within the knife and fluid is discharged through radial passages in the knife, which radial passages communicate with the longitudinal bore. In operation, while the knife pits the drupe, fluid discharged from within the knife contacts the walls of the passage left by the ejected pit, and removes the frass. If desired, the drupe may be first pitted, then decontaminated or washed, and/or dried sequentially, in separate stages. The invention is particularly effective with dates, prunes, olives, cherries, nectarines, peaches and avocados.

The dense skin makes it possible to deposit a thin slip-coating of a low friction material longitudinally upon a chosen portion of the surface. An extruded weatherseal for the glass of an automobile's window has the slip-coating deposited as a thin film on a contacting strip of a surface which is in contact with the glass.

    Abstract: A filtration device is provided for withdrawing permeate essentially continuously from a multicomponent aqueous substrate containing growing microorganisms in a reservoir. A vertical skein of fiber is scrubbed with coarse bubbles which emanate from a conversion baffle positioned under the skein. The substrate is aerated with fine bubbles in a size range small enough to transfer oxygen to the substrate efficiently. The baffle traps the fine bubbles and converts them to coarse bubbles which are effective to scrub the fibers. In the most preferred embodiment, the finished headers of the skein are derived from composite headers comprising a fixing lamina of resin in which the fibers are potted near their terminal ends, and a fugitive lamina of fugitive powdery material in which the terminal ends of the fibers are potted. The fugitive lamina is removed, preferably by dissolving the powder, e.g. finely divided common salt in water.

    Abstract: Limitation of the number of cassettes in an assembly currently used for the production of permeate is obviated by grouping plural cassettes into racks one or more of which may be isolated while permeate production from the remaining racks is uninterrupted. Ancillary functions such as back-pulsing, chemical cleaning and testing for defects in membranes (“integrity testing”) in one or more racks may proceed while production of permeate continues. The number of racks in a bank is determined by the period of the overall filtration cycle, typically 15 min, in which filtration period the ancillary period is a minor portion, typically 30 sec. The racks make it possible to use automatic on/off valves which open and close quicker than larger ones. The resulting saving in time, energy, and equipment costs, which when back-pulsing with permeate is surprisingly economical, is even greater when a chemical cleaning solution is to be used.

    Abstract: A vertical skein of “fibers”, opposed terminal portions of which are held in headers unconfined in a modular shell, is aerated with a gas-distribution means which produces a mass of bubbles serving the function of a scrub-brash for the outer surfaces of the fibers. The membrane device is surprisingly effective with relatively little cleansing gas, the specific flux through the membranes reaching an essentially constant relatively high value because the vertical deployment of fibers allows bubbles to rise upwards along the outer surfaces of the fibers. Further, bubbles flowing along the outer surfaces of the fibers make the fibers surprisingly resistant to being fouled by build-up of deposits of inanimate particles or microorganisms in the substrate provided that the length of each fiber is only slightly greater than the direct center-to-center distance between opposed faces of the headers, preferably in the range from at least 0.1% to about 5% greater.
