Abstract: An improved backplane apparatus for transmitting signals to and from a modem system. The modem system includes more than one modem for transmitting data via at least one telephone line and via at least one network. The modem system has a first bus for management signal communication with the modems at a predetermined first data rate, and a second bus for transmitting data between the telephone line and the modems at a predetermined second data rate greater than the first data rate. The modem system also has a third bus for transmitting data between the modems and the network at a predetermined third data rate greater than the second data rate, and a fourth bus for distributing DC power and ground potential. The modem system defines a first impedance for terminating the first bus, a second impedance for terminating the second bus, and a third impedance for terminating the third bus.

  • Patent number: 5412730
Abstract: A modem suitable for transmitting encrypted data over voice-grade telephone line. The modem is implemented by the combination of integrated circuit components including a microprocessor, a serial communications controller which communicates with connected data terminal equipment, and a modulator/demodulator for translating between voice band tone signals and digital data. Pseudo random number generators are employed at both the transmitting and receiving stations to supply identical sequences of encryption keys to a transmitting encoder and a receiving decoder. An initial random number seed value is made available to both stations. The random number generators are advanced at times determined by predetermined characteristics of the data being transmitted so that, after transmission has taken place, the common encryption key can be known only to the transmitting and receiving stations.

  • Patent number: 5408908
Abstract: A cutting machine for sheet material comprising a frame, a stationary knife on the frame and a reciprocating blade cooperating with the stationary knife. A motor on the frame is connected to a gear reducer that is in turn connected to a single push rod through a crank. The push rod is operatively connected to a torque tube that is connected adjacent its ends by link means to the reciprocating blade. Rotation of the crank by the gear reducer will actuate the single push rod and the torque tube operatively connected thereto to reciprocate the reciprocating blade. Spring means for assisting movement of the reciprocating blade are readily adjusted from exterior of the frame of the cutting machine. A rotatable cam follower on the reciprocating blade engages a guide block on the frame for moving the reciprocating blade into proper cooperative engagement with the stationary knife in use.

  • Patent number: 5406496
Abstract: The present invention is a method and an apparatus for automatically tuning a plant. The method includes the steps of applying a plurality of sinusoidal signals to the plant, and measuring the frequency response of the plant to the plurality of sinusoidal signals to detect frequencies at which the plant is resonant. The coefficients of at least one digital filter are calculated such that the at least one filter when combined with the plant suppresses the detected resonances. The method further includes applying at least one sinusoidal signal having a frequency substantially equal to a crossover frequency of the system to the at least one filter and plant, and measuring the frequency response to calculate the magnitude and phase response of the filters and plant at that frequency. The coefficients of the compensator are calculated such that when combined with the plant and the at least one filter the combination provides a response which yields said predetermined system response.

  • Patent number: 5406551
Abstract: A digital signal transmission using OFDM modulation scheme in which the valid transmission data can be reproduced without requiring a recovery of the carriers at a receiver side. On a transmitter side, the transmission data sequence in which predetermined reference data for each carrier are placed among valid transmission data is modulated according to an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation scheme using a plurality of carriers and obtained OFDM transmission signals are transmitted. On a receiver side, the received OFDM transmission signals are demodulated to obtain received data sequence containing valid received data and received reference data, and the valid transmission data are estimated from the received data sequence according to the valid received data, the received reference data, and the predetermined reference data for each carrier.
