    Abstract: 4-Hydroxy-5-methyl-2,3-dihydrofuranone-3 is obtained by heating a solution with pH between 1 and 7 of a 5-keto-aldohexonic acid or a derivative thereof in a polar solvent at a temperature of 70.degree. C. to 150.degree. C. The 5-keto-aldohexonic acid is preferably 5-ketogluconic acid.Meat flavors are obtained by heating the 5-keto-aldohexonic acid under the same conditions in the presence of a hydrogen sulphide donor like e.g. cysteine. This reaction product may be incorporated into foodstuffs. Also a process of modifying the organoleptic properties of a foodstuff or an ingredient for a foodstuff having a pH between 5 and 7 before consumption and which has to be heated at least 15 minutes to at least 70.degree. C. by incorporating from 30 to 2000 ppm of a 5-keto-aldohexonic acid is described.

    Abstract: A method of bleaching fabrics comprises contacting the fabrics with a liquor containing a surfactant and a chlorite such as sodium chlorite and irradiating the fabric and/or the liquor with ultra-violet light derived from an artificial source or from daylight. The liquor has a pH ideally above 8.5. A UV-light exposure equivalent to 2 hours daylight gives good results. The liquor may contain a number of other components common in bleaching products. The composition is a particulate detergent composition comprising at least 1% by weight of surfactant, 0.1-40% by weight of chlorite and less than 20% by weight of water, yielding a pH of about 8.5-11 when dispersed in water at a concentration of 0.5-10 g/l. The compositions are stable on storage and the time and degree of bleaching can be controlled by control of the exposure to UV-light.

    Abstract: A stable homogeneous aqueous liquid detergent composition contains 22 to 35% by weight of sodium tripolyphosphate and 6 to 15% by weight of an active detergent mixture comprising (a) a water-soluble anionic sulphonate or sulphate detergent; (b) an alkali metal soap of fatty acids having 12 to 18 carbon atoms, and (c) a nonionic detergent, in a weight ratio of (5.5-8.5):(0.5-3):(1.5-3). The composition is a pourable liquid having a viscosity of 0.35-1.0 Pa s measured at 20.degree. C. and at 21 seconds.sup.-1 shear rate and remaining stable after at least two 24-hour cycles of from -4.degree. C. to ambient temperature. Preferably the composition is prepared by mixing the ingredients in the proper sequence.
