  • Patent number: 7591787
Abstract: A method of measuring blood flow including several steps. In an initial step a first ultrasound beam is oriented in a direction substantially perpendicular to the direction of the blood flow to be measured. Next, the Doppler spectrum obtained from the backscattered echoes of said first ultrasound beam is measured. Subsequently, the ultrasound beam is reoriented so that the Doppler spectrum of the backscattered echoes of the ultrasound beam is substantially symmetrical around the zero frequency. The Doppler frequency of the backscattered echoes of a second ultrasound beam oriented at a fixed angle to the first ultrasound beam is then measured. Finally, the rate of blood flow is calculated based on the angle between the ultrasound beams and the measured Doppler frequency of the backscattered echoes of the second ultrasound beam.

  • Patent number: 7592314
Abstract: The present invention relates to neurological and physiological dysfunction associated with neuron disorders. In particular, the invention relates to the involvement of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and homologues in the aetiology of motor neuron disorders. The invention further concerns a novel, mutant transgenic mouse (VEGFm/m) with a homozygous deletion in the hypoxia responsive element (HRE) of the VEGF promoter which alters the hypoxic upregulation of VEGF. These mice suffer severe adult onset muscle weakness due to progressive spinal motor neuron degeneration which is reminiscent of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)—a fatal disorder with unknown aetiology. Furthermore, the neuropathy of these mice is not caused by vascular defects, but is due to defective VEGF-mediated survival signals to motor neurons.

  • Patent number: 7571837
Abstract: A squirting toy is comprised of a cylindrical housing and a piston that slides within to force water into or out of the housing via a hole therein. The housing is encased within a polyethylene closed cell foam shell. The shell is non-absorbing, so that the foam remains buoyant and keeps the gun afloat indefinitely when left in water. The foam is soft, so that the gun is not a safety hazard when left floating in a swimming pool.

  • Patent number: 7566222
Abstract: An apparatus is provided for demonstrating an absorbent product. The apparatus includes a torso-shaped manikin on which an absorbent product can be donned. An inlet is positioned on the manikin to receive synthetic urine, a first outlet is positioned on the manikin to correspond to male anatomy, and a second outlet is positioned on the manikin to correspond to female anatomy. A passageway is positioned in the manikin to direct synthetic urine from the inlet toward the first and second outlets. A method and kit are also provided for demonstrating the absorbent product.

  • Patent number: 7565761
Abstract: A barrel assembly for a weapon, said barrel assembly including a barrel; a plurality of projectile assemblies axially disposed in end to end abutting relationship within said barrel for operative sealing engagement with the bore of the barrel, each projectile including a projectile head and an integral cylindrical spacer portion extending axially and rearwardly from said projectile head; discrete propellant charges accommodated within said cylindrical spacer portion for propelling respective projectile assemblies sequentially through the muzzle of the barrel; ignition means for igniting said discrete propellant charges; and control means for selectively and sequentially actuating the ignition means.

  • Patent number: 7553839
Abstract: The present invention relates to compounds of the general formula (I) which are inhibitors of purine muclioside phosphorylases (PNP), purine phosphoribosyltransferases (PPRT), 5?-methylthioadenosine phosphorylases (MTAP), 5?-methylthioadenosine mucliosidases (MTAN) and/or nucleoside hydrolases (NH). The invention also relates to the use of these compounds in the treatment of diseases and infections including cancer, bacterial infections, protozoal infections, and T-cell mediated disease and to pharmaceutical compositions containing the compounds.

  • Patent number: 7552831
Abstract: A nipple adapter including a nipple having a first outer sealing flange and a second outer sealing flange, and a cylindrical nipple housing. The nipple housing includes an inner annular wall that defines a bore extending axially through the housing, an annular flange disposed on the inner annular wall, a first thread extending from the annular flange to a first axial end of the nipple housing, and a second thread extending from the annular flange to a second axial end of the nipple housing, the first thread having a pitch that differs from that of the second thread. The nipple is reversibly disposed within the nipple housing such that the annular flange is disposed between the first and second outer sealing flanges and the first and second threads are alternatively exposed for mating with corresponding threads of a variety of water bottles.
