Patent number: 7734748Abstract: A network element (NE) includes an intelligent interface (II) with its own operating environment rendering it active during the NE boot process, and with separate intelligence allowing it to take actions on the NE prior to, during, and after the boot process. The combination of independent operation and increased intelligence provides enhanced management opportunities to enable the NE to be controlled throughout the boot process and after completion of the boot process. For example, files may be uploaded to the NE before or during the boot process to restart the NE from a new software image. The II allows this downloading process to occur in parallel on multiple NEs from a centralized storage resource. Diagnostic checks may be run on the NE, and files, and MIB information, and other data may be transmitted from the II to enable a network manager to more effectively manage the NE.Type: GrantFiled: October 3, 2003Date of Patent: June 8, 2010Assignee: Nortel Networks LimitedInventors: Ramesh Durairaj, Tal Lavian, Phil Yonghui Wang

Patent number: 7719958Abstract: Multicast traffic may be routed using DVMRP or PIM over a Split MultiLink Trunk (SMLT). Network elements on the split side of the SMLT are interconnected by an Inter-Switch Trunk (IST) to enable them to exchange control messages associated with the multicast. When a control message is received on the IST, the network element will determine if the multicast control message is associated with a normal multicast or is associated with multicast over an SMLT link. Control messages related to SMLT links will be processed as if they were received over the SMLT link rather than the IST link. To prevent traffic from being forwarded by multiple network elements over the SMLT link, data traffic from an IST link may not be transmitted over an SMLT link. Flags are used to indicate whether a link is a SMLT link or regular link. Fast recovery may occur by causing participants to transmit triggered join messages upon recovery from a failure.Type: GrantFiled: September 29, 2005Date of Patent: May 18, 2010Assignee: Avaya, Inc.Inventors: Behfar Azimi, Wassim Tawbi, Roger Lapuh, Avoy Nanda, Ruchi Vats

Patent number: 7711828Abstract: Call Control entities in a network communicate between themselves by amending call processing messages to include encrypted network information. As such, a call may be established whose path through the network is dependent on the paths of other calls. Information of a scope larger than a Call Controller normally possesses can, as a result of this communication, be made available to Call Controllers for constraining call establishment. This information could relate to other calls and connections associated with those other calls. The information may also relate to gateways in and to adjacent networks and the Call Controllers in the adjacent networks that are related to the current Call Controller.Type: GrantFiled: July 14, 2006Date of Patent: May 4, 2010Assignee: Nortel Networks LimitedInventors: Stephen D. Patent number: 7697527Abstract: Frame contained destination information may be used by a switch to identify an appropriate output port for a given frame without performing a table access operation. This reduces the processing requirements of the switch to enable the switch to handle frames more efficiently. The frame contained destination information may be contained in the frame's local destination MAC addresses (DA) such that a portion of the DA directly indicates, for each switch that handles the frame, an output port for that switch. Different portions of the DA may be used by different switches, depending on where they are in the network hierarchy. Large switches may also use sub-fields within their allocated portion in the DA to identify internal switching components. A location resolution server may be provided to store and distribute IP and MAC addresses and respond to local ARP requests on the local domain.Type: GrantFiled: November 20, 2003Date of Patent: April 13, 2010Assignee: Nortel Networks LimitedInventors: Norival R. Patent number: 7684389Abstract: An N-dimensional lattice network that scales to capacities of the order of a Yotta bits per second (1024 bits per second) includes a plurality of sub-nets of edge module switches interconnected by an agile switching core. The agile core may be distributed. In the N-dimensional lattice network, each edge module 408 is connected to N core stages, each core stage having an associated dimensional indicator. The input/output ports of each edge module are divided into (N+1) port groups. One of the port groups serves local sources/sinks while the remaining port groups are respectively connected to core stages in each of the N dimensions. This structure permits virtually unlimited capacity growth and significantly simplifies the routing and forwarding functions. The edge modules are addressed using logical coordinates, one coordinate being assigned for each of the N dimensions. This simplifies routing and permits each edge module to compute its own routing tables.Type: GrantFiled: October 20, 2004Date of Patent: March 23, 2010Assignee: Nortel Networks LimitedInventor: Maged E. Patent number: 7684322Abstract: A flow admission control module for IP traffic types monitors network topology and usage. A new flow is not admitted if it is determined that the flow would push the utilization of available bandwidth reserved for the traffic type on a link in the associated path beyond a predetermined threshold. The admission control module may, as a result of dynamic changes to network topology capacity, re-compute the link utilization for effected active flows. The admission control module may also account for protection regimes in flow admission calculations.Type: GrantFiled: July 1, 2004Date of Patent: March 23, 2010Assignee: Nortel Networks LimitedInventors: Allan Sand, Jozef Babiarz, Dany Sylvain

Patent number: 7684783Abstract: A system and method for securing communications in a wireless network includes the steps of authenticating members of the wireless network, generating a member private key to be used by the members of the wireless network, and distributing the member private key to each of the members of the wireless network. A member is authenticated based on the ability of the member to be physically proximate to at least one other member of the wireless network at a given instant. The member private key is generated by one of the members, hereinafter referred to as a master member, in response to a changing value stored at the one of the members. The member private key is then securely distributed to each of the members in the WLAN network.Type: GrantFiled: March 23, 2004Date of Patent: March 23, 2010Assignee: Autocell Laboratories, Inc.Inventors: Gary Vacon, Floyd Backes

Patent number: 7684352Abstract: A distributed hash table is implemented to store routing information on a network. Node IDs exchanged in connection with implementation of a link state routing protocol are used as keys in the distributed hash table, and routes are stored at one or more nodes on the network. When a route is learned, the route is processed against the set of keys to determine which nodes should store the route. When a route is needed, the route is processed against the set of keys to determine which nodes should have the route information. The manner in which the route is processed against the set of keys is the same in both instances, so that the DHT may be used to store and retrieve route information on the network. The DHT may be implemented to store MAC addresses, IP addresses, MPLS labels, or other information of interest to enable routes to be stored and learned by network elements on the network.Type: GrantFiled: March 6, 2007Date of Patent: March 23, 2010Assignee: Nortel Networks LtdInventors: Peter Ashwood Smith, Guoli Yin, William McCormick

Patent number: 7684388Abstract: A multi-grained network includes edge modules that switch high-variance multi-rate data traffic, and independent core modules that switch paths having different granularities. The core may include core modules that switch fixed-size data blocks, core modules that switch channels or bands of channels, core modules that switch entire links, and core modules that cross-connect channels or links. To simplify the control functions, the core modules operate independently from each other. Direct link, band or channel connections may be established for selected ingress-egress edge module pairs, if traffic volumes warrant. The use of graded granularity in the core simplifies the control function and reduces network cost.Type: GrantFiled: November 8, 2004Date of Patent: March 23, 2010Assignee: Nortel Networks LimitedInventors: Maged E. Beshai, Richard Vickers

Patent number: 7680934Abstract: Network resources are assigned as dedicated, shared, or public network resources. The resources are then allocated to L1-VPN subscribers on demand. Splitting assignment of the resources from allocation of the resources enables resources to be assigned to more than one subscriber on the network. Temporary physical dedication of the resources to one of the subscribers may be accomplished by allocating the assigned resources on demand, so that particular subscribers are provided with dedicated resources on an as-needed basis. Dedication of the network resources allows the network resources to be configured, managed, and controlled by the customers. The network resources may be optical resources and the links may be time slots on particular fibers. Optionally, by enabling prioritization to cause displacement of link allocations, additional flexibility may be obtained in allocating links to L1-VPNs such as by allowing the use of private and shared resources by other subscribers.Type: GrantFiled: March 26, 2004Date of Patent: March 16, 2010Assignee: Nortel Networks LimitedInventors: Raymond Aubin, Malcolm Betts, Stephen Shew

Patent number: 7660263Abstract: A system and method for graphically representing associations between wireless network devices in a way that visually indicates the maximum amount of throughput between the associated devices, as well as a channel that is currently selected for communications between the associated devices. The thickness of a line between the associated devices may indicate the maximum throughput between the devices, whereas the color of the line may indicate the channel on which the associated devices are currently communicating. Other visual characteristics of lines generated between associated devices may be used to visually represent maximum possible throughput and current channel selection. Associations between the devices in the wireless network may be determined by checking a list of associated stations maintained in each access point.Type: GrantFiled: May 27, 2004Date of Patent: February 9, 2010Assignee: Autocell Laboratories, Inc.Inventors: Roger Pfister, Paul Callahan

Patent number: 7656823Abstract: Collection of topology mapping linkage information between a Storage Area Network (“SAN”) and a transparent interconnecting transport network is at least partially automated. Physical topology information is gathered by detecting use of a physical path between a port of a first SAN device and a port of a second SAN device logically proximate to the transport network. This may be accomplished by discovering World Wide Names of end-points in a Fibre Channel SAN, and discovering Media Access Control addresses of end-points in an Ethernet SAN. The discovered physical topology information is then employed with known transport network logical topology information to determine which logical path or paths are associated with the physical path, i.e., to generate a mapping.Type: GrantFiled: October 29, 2004Date of Patent: February 2, 2010Assignee: Nortel Networks LimitedInventors: Indermohan Monga, Bruce Schofield, Pierre Miller

Patent number: 7656792Abstract: Alternate multicast/broadcast paths may be calculated in a routed network to enable broadcast/multicast traffic to be transmitted around a local failure in the routed network until the routing system reconverges on a new network topography. According to an embodiment of the invention, the nodes on a multicast tree or a broadcast tree may compute alternate paths for each of the downstream nodes in the multicast/broadcast tree or for select nodes in the multicast/broadcast tree. The select nodes may be those nodes that have advertised membership in the multicast or a set number of hops downstream on the branch affected by the failure. The alternate paths may be unicast paths from the node to the other nodes on the multicast/broadcast tree. U-turn nodes may be used where there is no regular loop-free alternate network path to a node on the downstream multicast/broadcast tree.Type: GrantFiled: March 2, 2007Date of Patent: February 2, 2010Assignee: Nortel Networks LimitedInventors: Hong Zhang, Guoli Yin, Peter Ashwood Smith

Patent number: 7656985Abstract: A timestamp-based all digital phase locked loop is utilized for clock synchronization for Circuit Emulation Service (“CES”) over packet networks. The all digital phase locked loop at a CES receiver includes a phase detector, a loop filter, a digital oscillator and a timestamp counter. The all digital phase locked loop enables the CES receiver to synchronize a local clock at the receiver with a clock at a CES transmitter, where indications of transmitter clock signals are communicated to the receiver as timestamps. The phase detector is operable to compute an error signal indicative of differences between the timestamps and a local clock signal. The loop filter is operable to reduce jitter and noise in the error signal, and thereby produce a control signal. The digital oscillator is operable to oscillate at a frequency based at least in-part on the control signal, and thereby produce a digital oscillator output signal.Type: GrantFiled: April 12, 2006Date of Patent: February 2, 2010Assignee: Nortel Networks LimitedInventors: James Aweya, Michel Ouellette, Delfin Y.
