  • Patent number: 6871076
Abstract: There is disclosed a method, system and program product for automatically adjusting location based system information in a mobile computer to reflect the time zone where a user of the mobile computer connects to the Internet, as a function of the geographic location of the IP address of the connection, as seen by an address server remote from the connection place. A table mapping the IP address of the computer with each other IP address where the mobile computer connects to the Internet and corresponding time zone data is constructed with minimal user interaction each time a new Internet connection is made. Thereafter, anytime the user connects to the Internet at an IP address in the table, location based system information is appropriately adjusted with no intervention by the user.

  • Patent number: 6782538
Abstract: A system for efficiently generating keys for subsequently objects during object creation and for finding and activating objects using the generated keys in an object oriented system includes one or more processors, a storage system, one or more I/O controllers, a system bus, operatively connecting the processors, the storage system and the I/O controllers, a system control program for controlling the operation of the system, and an extensible instance manager which generates keys and manages instances of objects under the control of the system control program.

  • Patent number: 6574752
Abstract: A method, system and computer program are described for isolating bus errors detected during system start-up by utilizing a technique in which a shared mailbox associated with a service processor is provided for holding the address of an adapter in an I/O drawer. If an error is detected the server processor is notified. The server processor then retrieves the address from the mailbox, uses it to derive a location code which is then passed along with the error code to an appropriate error analysis routine. The start-up procedure is then shut down.

  • Patent number: 6516367
Abstract: A method, system and computer program product are provided for detecting the presence of devices, particularly hot plug devices, connected to a bus both during start-up of a computer system and while the system is running. At start-up, and periodically thereafter, all possible device connections are polled by microprocessors, called sub-bus controllers, which include logic for generating a map of components present on each bus. Each map is accessible by the master bus controller. During system run-time, periodic polling, may be continuous thereby providing a real time device status map for every available bus connection.

  • Patent number: 6326952
Abstract: A method and apparatus for implementing the keys of a visual keyboard so that each key can perform multiple functions without the prior or simultaneous selection of differing visual keys. Each key is divided into quadrants each of which provide a different function which is well recognized and understood by the end user.

  • Patent number: 6281897
Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed for moving one or more objects from and returning them to a user visible portion of a work plane, which includes but is larger than the visible portion, by interpreting a single user input action and in response thereto changing the position of the objects. Objects remain in the work plane in either the user visible or non-user visible portions. In one embodiment, a smaller than actual representation of the entire work plane is displayed with that portion of the work plane currently in focus by the user.

  • Patent number: 6279036
Abstract: An apparatus and method for determining rates chargeable to advertisers based upon the actual viewing time for which their advertisements were seen by a given user. This is accomplished through the use of a advertisement control plug in combination with a file used during times in which the user is not connected to the Internet or other applicable network.

  • Patent number: 6138243
Abstract: A system, method and computer program are provided for maintaining time accurately and synchronously across a plurality of interconnected processors in a data processing system. Each processor has its own time base register and access to a single time delta variable. Time is reported as the sum of a processor's time base register and the time delta variable. Time base registers are set only at system initialization or boot; thereafter, any system wide time changes are effected by changing only the time delta variable value.
