Patent number: 7765605Abstract: A method for copy protecting a record carrier is disclosed, in which method the copy protected record carriers are provided with a pattern of logical errors which cannot be corrected by the error correcting rules predefined for said record carrier. The pattern of logical errors represents access control information. The logical errors are generated during decoding the bit sequence read from the record carrier. Bit errors may be positioned in the bit sequence so as to counteract de-interleaving which is part of an error decoding process in a reading device and accumulate in error words which are uncorrectable. Also a method for detecting access control information and a retrieval arrangement are disclosed, which retrieval arrangement serves to detect the access control information by selecting at least one error location, but not all error locations on the record carrier, and verifying the presence of an error by reading the selected error location via the reading means.Type: GrantFiled: May 26, 2006Date of Patent: July 27, 2010Assignee: Rovi Solutions LimitedInventor: Peter A. Patent number: 7755980Abstract: The more effective is the copy protection provided on a DVD, the greater is the likelihood that the copy protection will adversely interfere with legitimate uses of the disc. In a disc where the content is arranged in physical sectors, it is now proposed to provide subversive regions on the disc having a similar structure to genuine regions. A subversive region and a genuine region will each extend over one or more physical sectors. The subversive region will be provided with physical sector addresses which coincide with addresses of the genuine region. Navigational data will ensure that it is the genuine, rather than the subversive, region which will be accessed during normal play, but the subversive region will effectively hide the genuine region during copying.Type: GrantFiled: April 4, 2007Date of Patent: July 13, 2010Assignee: Rovi Solutions CorporationInventors: Carmen Laura Basile, Richard A. Patent number: 7707640Abstract: A method for copy protection includes receiving data in a recording module representing content to be recorded on a recording medium, the data including an indication that the content is to be protected from unauthorized copying. Responsive to the indication, the recording module signals a protection module to initiate a protection protocol in synchronization with the recording module. The protection module generates control information, so as to prevent the unauthorized copying of the content that is to be protected, and conveys the control information to the recording module, in accordance with the protocol. The recording module combines the control information with the data representing the content in the recording module, for recording on the recording medium.Type: GrantFiled: July 21, 2005Date of Patent: April 27, 2010Assignee: Macrovision Europe LimitedInventors: Eyal Shavit, Philippe Selve, Ran Alcalay

Patent number: 7685641Abstract: A method for producing a copy-protected audio compact disc containing a plurality of symbols within error-correction codewords, representing audio data samples of an audio signal is provided. The method includes the steps of selecting at least one audio data sample of the audio signal (1415); locating the data symbols representing audio data sample (1420); overwriting symbols with erroneous symbols (1440); locating the error-correction codewords associated with the data symbols and disabling the error-correction of said error-correction codewords (1455).Type: GrantFiled: August 22, 2000Date of Patent: March 23, 2010Assignee: Macrovision CorporationInventors: Moshe Brody, Baruch Sollish

Patent number: 7603022Abstract: A networked personal video recording (“PVR”) system couples a plurality of clients to one or more PVR media servers over a network. One or more PVR media servers include television tuners to tune television signals. A storage medium buffers the television signals to implement PVR functionality. For example, the PVR media server records television programs for clients. Clients are assigned to television tuners, and the clients display television programs received at the assigned tuner. The network transfers the buffered television signals to the clients.Type: GrantFiled: July 2, 2003Date of Patent: October 13, 2009Assignee: Macrovision CorporationInventors: Daniel Putterman, Brad Dietrich, Jeremy Toeman, Pedro Freitas, Ludovic Legrand, Shawn McCaffrey, James Grimm, Lijia Jin, Paul Novaes
