Abstract: Disclosed herein is a composition comprising an isocyanate-reactive compound and a catalyst comprising a bismuth carboxylate and a zirconium carboxylate, wherein the catalyst is present in an amount sufficient to catalyze a reaction with the isocyanate-reactive compound and a polyisocyanate. Also disclosed is a process for preparing a composition, which comprises contacting an isocyanate-reactive compound with a polyisocyanate, in the presence of an effective amount of a catalyst comprising a bismuth carboxylate and a zirconium carboxylate, under reaction conditions sufficient to form a composition containing at least one urethane group.
Abstract: Disclosed herein are phthalonitriles of the following formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2, and R.sup.3 are independently in each occurrence an aryl or phosphazine group; X is independently in each occurrence O, S, S(O), S(O)(O), P(R.sup.5), P(O)(R.sup.5), or N(R.sup.5); R.sup.4 is independently in each occurrence aryl, aryloxy, polyhaloaryl, polyhaloaryloxy, polyhaloalkylaryl, or polyhaloalkylaryloxy; R.sup.5 is independently in each occurrence aryl, polyhaloaryl, or polyhaloalkylaryl; n is a number from 1 to 4; and m is a number from 2 to 5. Also disclosed are phthalocyanines prepared from the above-described phthalonitriles. Also disclosed is a lubricant composition which comprises a lubricating fluid and a phthalonitrile or phthalocyanine as described above.
Abstract: Corrosion of metal surfaces in contact with an aqueous medium is inhibited by incorporating a N-(hydrophobe aromatic)pyridinium compound such as N-(p-dodecylphenyl-2,4,6-trimethylpyridinium sulfoacetate into the aqueous medium.
Abstract: A polymer comprising a backbone portion containing at least one amide moiety and a plurality of imidazole, benzimidazole, benzoxazole, or benzothiazole moieties is prepared by contacting a polyisocyanate with a compound containing at least two end moieties selected from the following: imidazole, benzimidazole, benzoxazole, or benzothiazole, under reaction conditions sufficient to form the corresponding polymer containing amide moieties are disclosed. The process of the invention is suitable for the preparation of thermoset polymers which are advantageously free of surface defects, since a solvent is not required and no volatiles are evolved during the curing process. Urethane and/or urea polymers comprising a backbone portion containing at least one urea or urethane moiety, at least one amide moiety, and a plurality of imidazole, benzimidazole, benzoxazole, or benzothiazole moieties are also disclosed.
Abstract: A process for the preparation of vinyl aromatic compounds comprises contacting an aromatic compound and an olefin in the presence of a catalytic amount of a cyclopentadienyl, indenyl, or fluorenyl rhodium complex under reaction conditions sufficient to form the corresponding vinyl aromatic compound. Novel alkyl- or trimethylsilyl-substituted indenyl or fluorenyl compounds are among the compounds suitable for use in the process of the invention.
