Abstract: The present invention is directed to a process for the preparation of modified copolymers as a pigment dispersant for coating compositions comprising the steps ofa) polymerizingi) an ethylenically unsaturated monomer containing an isocyanate group withii) ethylenically unsaturated monomer having no functional group capable of undergoing a reaction with said isocyanate group to form a copolymer with isocyanate andb) reating stepwise or simultaneously said isocyanate groups withiii) a polyalkylenglycol monoalkyl ether or amine andiv) optionally, a compound having one primary or one secondary amino group or another alcohol.
Abstract: The present invention is a composition comprising an optically variable pigment modified with a silane functional compound and a copolymer which is a polymeric backbone having a reactive functionality thereon to react with the silane functional compound. The invention also includes a process for treating the optically variable pigment, and a coating composition containing the treated optically variable pigment.

Abstract: The present invention relates to acid-curing aqueous coating compositions, in particular for the coating of finish sheeting and continuous edging, which contain aminoplast resin and hydroxyl-containing polyesters, wherein the polyester is prepared froma) 33 to 55 mol % of a dicarboxylic acid component obtained froma.sub.1) 50 to 100 mol % of olefinically unsaturated aliphatic dicarboxylic acidsa.sub.2) 0 to 50 mol % of saturated aliphatic dicarboxylic acidsa.sub.3) 0 to 50 mol % of saturated aliphatic dicarboxylic acids andb) 67 to 45 mol % of a polyol component obtained fromb.sub.1) 20 to 90 mol % of at least one monomeric and/or oligomeric glycol having 2 to 4 carbon atoms per glycol segment and number average molecular weights smaller than 200b.sub.2) 5 to 30 mol % of at least one polymeric glycol having 2 to 4 carbon atoms per glycol segment and a number average molecular weight between 300 and 1000 andb.sub.
Abstract: The invention relates to aqueous electrocoating paints which contain 2 to 10% by weight of an anticorrosive pigment based on zinc silicate in combination with 1 to 15% by weight of a very fine quartz powder or cristobalite powder coated with epoxysilane or aminosilane, the percentages by weight being based on the total solids content of the electrocoating paint and the anticorrosive pigment being preparable by fusing together 35 to 65% by weight of ZnO, 15 to 35% by weight of SiO.sub.2 and 0 to 20% by weight of B.sub.2 O.sub.3 and/or 0 to 20% by weight of WO.sub.3 and/or 0 to 20% by weight of MoO.sub.3 and/or 0 to 20% by weight of SnO.sub.2, the components being fused together using at least one of the cited oxides besides ZnO and SiO.sub.2 in such a manner that the percentages by weight always total 100.
Abstract: The invention is a slightly water-soluble, time release corrosion inhibitor compound for treating aluminum flake pigment. The corrosion inhibitor is the reaction product of a water-soluble metal salt including metals selected from the group consisting of yttrium and rare earth metals and an anionic metal salt including transition metal oxo-complexes and soluble salts of silicon and mixtures thereof. The corrosion inhibitor is useful for preventing hydrogen gassing of aluminum pigment particles. The compound is particularly useful for preventing gassing of bare and chromated aluminum pigment particles in aqueous compositions and in water-borne coating compositions having a basic pH. The pigment particles used in combination with the corrosion inhibitors of the present invention experience significantly less hydrogen gassing in a high pH aqueous environment and in water-borne coating compositions having high pH, than aluminum flake pigment particles and coatings without the corrosion inhibitor.
