  • Patent number: 5148237
Abstract: A ring laser gyro has an optical resonator (12), forming a loop- or ring-shaped beam cavity, a lasing medium (14) arranged in the resonator for furnishing, when stimulated, two laser oscillation pulses circulating in the resonator in opposing directions, and a device for measuring the change in frequency and/or wavelength of the laser oscillation pulses as a function of the rotation of the resonator. A saturable absorber (16) is arranged in the laser resonator for the purpose of fixing the standing wave resulting due to the laser oscillation pulses circulating in the opposing directions as regards the laser resonator. Rotation of the laser resonator changes the wavelengths of the laser oscillation pulses circulating in opposing directions. The change in wavelength and/or the difference in the frequencies of the laser oscillation pulses constitute a measure of the rotation rate. No effect making it difficult to measure low rotary speeds in known ring laser gyros occurs in the present ring laser gyro.

  • Patent number: 5146246
Abstract: An apparatus for presentation of apparent three-dimensional images without special viewing glasses is disclosed. A projection system projects right and left stereo images from a stereoscopic slide so that the right stereo image and the left stereo image become superimposed relative to one another on a viewing screen. The viewing screen comprises light transmissive slit-raster members and a light diffusion member. The viewing screen is adapted to allow the right and left stereo images to pass between the opaque raster members and be perceived only by the right and left eyes, respectively, of the viewer as the left image formed in a raster-like manner on the diffusion member is blocked by further opaque raster members and prevented from being perceived by the right eye and the right stereo image also formed in a raster-like manner on the diffusion member is blocked by the further opaque raster members and prevented from being perceived by the left eye.

  • Patent number: 4704055
Abstract: A drill is described having a metal bit carrier part on which a sintered metal bit is placed. The bit possesses at least one enclosed helical cooling channel which continues in alignment into a corresponding cooling channel in the bit carrier part. This drill is particularly characterized by very great mechanical and thermal stability, which is not adversely affected in any way by the system of cooling channels in the interior of the drill, so that the service life and cutting power of the drill can be greatly increased. These advantages apply both to twist drills proper and to single-lipped deep-hole drills, for which there is the particular advantage that the geometry of the drill head can be optimally adapted to the particular material to be processed.

  • Patent number: 4642942
Abstract: Described herein is an apparatus for grinding a twist drill bit, especially for web thinning and split pointing of the tip of a twist drill. The apparatus includes a grinding disk and a drill bit holder movable relative thereto mounted on a support. The support may execute relative motion with respect to the grinding disk under cam control in two coordinates and using a grinding disk having an invariable profile, in order to produce tip grinding patterns of various types. Preferably, the cam control is performed by means of interchangeable templates so that it is possible, using only a single grinding disk, no longer subject to the necessity of dressing, to produce a multiplicity of tip surface patterns that are optimally adapted to the given drill bit geometry.

  • Patent number: 4591524
Abstract: An adsorbent layer (stationary phase) for a pressurized layer chromatographic apparatus, for the development of linear chromatogram, is sealed at the edges by impregnation. For the purpose of solvent control some of the adsorbent material is removed in one or several zones of the adsorbent layer near the place of solvent admission, or one or several baffle plates or wires are arranged behind the place(s) of sample application, or if necessary, the adsorbent layer is provided with a conventionally formed concentration zone in the area of the solvent admission. As a result of the impregnation, the migrating solvent composite does not escape at the edges of the adsorbent layer according to the invention in case of overpressure. As a result of the removal of adsorbent material, or the arrangement of baffles or wires, or the application of a concentration zone, the solvent migrates with a straight-line front.

  • Patent number: 4520595
Abstract: The invention relates to an automatic machine tool for machining workpieces, including a number n of workpiece receivers that can be adjusted in angular and/or spatial position and including an equal number n of work stations, one of said work stations being an exchange station, said receivers or stations being disposed at mutual angular separations of 360.degree./n on a rotatable index table, said stations or said receivers being locally fixed thereon and said index table being advanceable in such a manner that each workpiece traverses all stations in the same sequence. By applying the invention reliable and precise machining, coupled with simple construction should be achieved. This is made possible by the fact that the drive of the index table is controllable so that a sequence of (n-1) rotary steps by 360.degree./n in one direction is followed by a rotary step of 360.degree. (n-1)/n in the opposite direction.

  • Patent number: 4468778
Abstract: On one side of a waveguide laser (1), the cavity is terminated by two totally reflecting optical elements or by one totally reflecting element and one (partially) reflecting element (6; 7). The other side of the laser faces the long side (10") of a prism (10), in contact or with spacing, serving to fold the beam. A further prism (11) cooperates with one of the short sides (10') of the prism (10) cooperate to form a variable gap to influence the oscillation of the laser beam. If both of the optical elements (6; 7) are totally reflecting, the beam may be extracted from the cavity at this point. The function of the two prisms is that of a Q-switch with short operating times, which can also be designated as a frustration element.
