  • Patent number: 7092162
Abstract: An optical cavity is combined with a MUX or a de-MUX device having substantially the same free-spectral range in order to enhance the bandwidth of the device. The optical cavity can be tuned to shift the frequencies of maximum insertion loss to match the center frequency of each channel. The reflectivities of the reflective surfaces of the cavity are judiciously selected to produce the insertion-loss spectrum needed to optimize the desired result. Multiple cavities can be used in series to refine the shape of the pass-band spectrum. A frequency window is used to fine tune the free-spectral range of the cavity and to shift the peaks of its insertion-loss spectrum to the desired frequencies. Inner and outer cavity surfaces are oriented to eliminate interference from secondary reflections.

  • Patent number: 7067405
Abstract: A plasma is produced in a treatment space by diffusing a plasma gas at atmospheric pressure and subjecting it to an electric field created by two metallic electrodes separated by a dielectric material, a precursor material is mixed with the plasma, and a substrate film or web is coated by vapor deposition of the vaporized substance at atmospheric pressure in the plasma field. The deposited precursor is cured by electron-beam, infrared-light, visible-light, or ultraviolet-light radiation, as most appropriate for the particular material being-deposited. Plasma pre-treatment and post-treatment steps are used to enhance the properties of the resulting coated products. Similar results are obtained by atomizing and spraying the liquid precursor in the plasma field.

  • Patent number: 7057738
Abstract: The tilted relationship between the reference and test mirrors of a Fizeau interferometer is used to spatially separate the reflections from the two surfaces. The separate beams are filtered through a spatial polarization element that provides different states of polarization to the beams. The beams are subsequently recombined to form a substantially collinear beam that is processed using a spatial-phase-shift interferometer that permits quantitative phase measurement in a single video frame. Alternatively, two beams with orthogonal polarization are injected into the Fizeau cavity at different angles, such that after reflection from the reference and test optics they are substantially collinear. Unwanted reflections are blocked at the focal plane through the use of a circular aperture. Short coherence length light and a delay line may be used to mitigate stray reflections, reduce measurement integration times, and implement temporal phase averaging.

  • Patent number: 7056430
Abstract: The cell-delivery unit of a high-throughput electrophysiological testing system is implemented as a reusable movable unit suitable for repetitive delivery of cells to a disposable, multi-aperture patch-clamp tray. An electric field emanating from the patch aperture is used to align the dispenser with the aperture. A set of electrodes in the nozzle of the dispenser is used to detect the electric field and effect the alignment. According to another aspect of the invention, dielectrophoretic fields produced by sets of electrodes in the nozzle form a retaining cage that is used first to suspend a test cell directly above the patch aperture and then to urge the cell toward it. A movable cell sorter may also be coupled to the cell-delivery unit.

  • Patent number: 6816315
Abstract: A parallel glass plate mounted on a rotating fixture is used to precisely control the optical path length of a light beam. The glass plate refracts the incident optical signal to increase the length of its optical path as a function of the angle of incidence. The device can easily achieve a precision in the order of nanometers and is particularly suitable to fine tune the cavity length of a resonator and the optical path difference of an interferometer. Accordingly, the preferred application of the invention is in an interferometric interleaver. The glass plate can also be coated with a partially reflective coating to attenuate the optical signal passing therethrough. By judiciously selecting the refractive index, the thermal coefficient of refraction, and the coefficient of thermal expansion of the glass, thermal effects may be virtually eliminated.

  • Patent number: 6814454
Abstract: A light source with multiple parallel beams is combined with a pair of opposing mirrors mounted on a rotating fixture and with a fixed aperture to produce a single output beam. Through the motion of the rotating fixture, the pair of mirrors shifts the location of the output of each input beam passing through the device so as to sequentially channel each beam into the optical path defined by the aperture. Thus, the input source corresponding to the output beam may be quickly switched by rotating the pair of mirrors to the position that produces the appropriate shift of the beam selected from the light source. In another embodiment of the invention, the pair of opposing mirrors is replaced by a transparent block similarly mounted on a rotating fixture.

  • Patent number: 6799100
Abstract: A supervisory safety-control system is implemented by dividing a mine's territory into zones of free operation (“permission zones”) wherein a vehicle is allowed to move according to predetermined permission parameters but unhindered by other system constraints. Traffic of autonomous vehicles in each permission zone is controlled by the supervisory system in conjunction with and in addition to conventional safety constraints associated with the guidance system that effects the vehicle's tracking of predetermined trajectories. Permission zones are assigned and activated using criteria that ensure the vehicle will remain entirely within active zones so long as the vehicle acts within such predetermined permission parameters. Each permission zone is also associated with a maximum velocity profile that overrides guidance-system safety controls, if necessary, and ensures stoppage of the vehicle at the end of the permission zone.

  • Patent number: 6797124
Abstract: A solar distilling apparatus employs anthracite coal as a heat-absorbing medium. Greenhouse roof elements rest over a gutter that is isolated from the water-holding container to prevent deposit formation and algae growth from reaching the gutter. Bacterial growth is inhibited by ventilation and the use of titanium-laden magnetite mixed with the anthracite particles. The gutter is also isolated from the exterior of the unit, which prevents contamination from outside sources. The exterior side of the roof elements resting on the gutter are fitted with a metal skirt that provides a heat sink preventing the re-evaporation of condensation flowing toward the gutter.

  • Patent number: 6799097
Abstract: A railroad traffic control system that links each locomotive to a control center for communicating data and control signals. Using on-board computers, GPS and two-way communication hardware, rolling stock continuously communicate position, vital sign data, and other information for recording in a data base and for integration in a comprehensive computerized control system. The data base includes train schedules for real time display on train monitors. The current position of each train is compared to its planned schedule online to provide immediate information to the dispatcher to determine whether a corrective action is necessary. When a train's deviation from its planned schedule exceeds a predetermined parameter, the system automatically calculates alternative schedules for all trains in the system according to preselected operational constraints as necessary to minimize the effect of the deviation.

  • Patent number: 6793791
Abstract: An elastomeric cell is used as the disposable part of an apparatus for isoelectric focusing in free solution (without gels) in the 0.5 to 5 ml volume range. An inlet port is used for priming the cell and end-connectors for coupling with electrodes. A grid of parallel rods compresses the cell against a cold plate, thereby causing swelling of the skin of the cell between pairs of rods and forming contiguous fluid bubble-compartments for IEF separation. Before collection of separated fractions, the gap between the rods and the plate is further reduced so as to create distinct fluid compartments which now contain discrete products of separation. The separated fractions are collected by syringe-like devices by puncturing the elastomer skin. The plate, rods and deformable cell are capable of rotation or gentle rocking motion around the cell's main axis to avoid gravitational convection during the focusing process.

  • Patent number: 6776896
Abstract: A perfusion-chamber structure includes a chamber plate with an extracellular compartment, a partition plate with an electrode aperture, and a foundation plate with an intracellular compartment. A gap between the chamber plate and the partition plate produces a channel for applying suction that draws extracellular solution from the extracellular compartment and facilitates the movement and positioning of a test cell over the electrode aperture. The positioning procedure for the test cell is accompanied by a slight positive pressure applied to the intracellular solution in the intracellular compartment of the perfusion chamber to cause upward fluid flow through the electrode aperture. When the cell is positioned over the electrode aperture, the positive pressure on the intracellular fluid is reversed to suction and the cell is seated thereby to form the seal.

  • Patent number: 6771457
Abstract: A two-lever toggle mechanism operates in conjunction with a conventional toggle bracket of an I/O station to prevent the incorrect loading of a DLT cartridge into a dedicated pass-through slot. A rotating front lever includes a leading protrusion facing the slot and a front wing that cooperates with the toggle bracket to prevent its closure when an incorrectly loaded cartridge is present in the slot. A rotating rear lever similarly incorporates a trailing protrusion facing the slot and a shank slidably coupled to an elongated groove in the front lever, such that the two levers rotate together. Therefore, the trailing protrusion provides an additional safeguard to ensure that only a DLT cartridge that is placed correctly into the slot permits the closure of the toggle bracket.
