Abstract: Printing screens are registered using a photosensitive position locating sensor which is affixed to a pallet and aligned with the image of a register mark on the first of a series of printing screens. The location of the image is stored and signalled in a display device. The pallet is then roughly aligned with a second and subsequent screens of the series. The subsequent screens are each moved until the image of its register mark is superimposed upon the stored image. The signal output from the sensor is applied to a microprocessor which controls the display device.

Abstract: An active matrix portion of an active matrix liquid crystal display is created by a process that fabricates silicon wafers containing a plurality of transistors in an array necessary for the display. A plurality of these wafers are aligned and affixed to a transparent substrate. All silicon other than the active circuits is removed. Transparent and conductive pads as well as vertical and horizontal driver lines are added directly onto the substrate and interconnect with the individual transistors. The resulting pixels are slightly undersize but will be in perfect alignment in rows and columns.
Abstract: A single substrate polymeric cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) device useful in display applications such as for high efficiency polarizers and color filters is created by a process that coats a first substrate with a polyimide layer and a second substrate with an amorphous fluoropolymer layer. Both layers are buffed and liquid CLC material is placed between the grooved layers. After annealing, the amorphous fluoropolymer coated substrate is removed, leaving the CLC material bonded to a single substrate.
Abstract: An emergency aircraft start apparatus and method utilizing a donor aircraft to provide pneumatic and/or electrical power to a disabled receiver aircraft which is unable to be started due to a failure in the receiver aircraft's starting system or to the unavailability of ground auxiliary equipment.
Abstract: An electrically activated infrared filter utilizes a mixture of infrared absorbing dyes in liquid crystal which normally presents a substantial cross section of dye to absorb the infrared component of impinging light. Polarizing light to be parallel to the direction of liquid crystal alignment enhances the absorption of infrared components. In an alternative embodiment, a chiral additive to the liquid crystal solution increases the dye cross section density which, by absorption, attenuates a higher proportion of the infrared wavelengths. A predetermined voltage differential across the cell aligns the liquid crystal and dye molecules to the voltage gradient, presenting a substantially non-absorptive path to the infrared components of impinging light.

Abstract: A method for initially positioning the scanning probe of a scanning probe microscope includes the steps of initially using fine position control to reduce the distance between probe and sample and, if the sample surface is not encountered, reversing the direction of the fine position control to an intermediate position and then using a coarse control in predetermined increments to narrow the distance between the probe and the sample. The fine control is again used and if the sample surface is not encountered, the steps are repeated until the surface is encountered so that the scanning operation can commence.
