  • Patent number: 6501068
Abstract: A method of manufacturing patterns on the surfaces of grating elements of a torque transducer having a shaft comprising first and second rigid torque input members connected by a torsional coupling enabling relative angular deflection between the first and second input members, first and second grating elements respectively associated with the first and second input members, the surfaces of the grating elements being adjacent to each other and able to relatively displace as a function of torque in the shaft, the method comprising the steps of: forming an assembly by rotationally and axially fixing the input members and respective grating elements to the torsional coupling; mounting the assembly in a machine comprising a radiation source arranged to irradiate regions of the surfaces of the grating elements while a relative angular displacement between the torque input members with respect to their zero torque alignment condition is maintained; and simultaneously irradiating regions of the surfaces of the grati

  • Patent number: 6197550
Abstract: The invention provides DNA sequences encoding novel members of the TGF-&bgr; family of proteins. The TGF-&bgr; family comprises proteins which function as growth and/or differentiation factors and which are useful in medical applications. Accordingly, the invention also describes the isolation of the above-mentioned DNA sequences, the expression of the encoded proteins, the production of said proteins and pharmaceutical compositions containing said proteins.

  • Patent number: 6169721
Abstract: An optical recording medium has a substrate having an annular grooves, a recording layer including an organic coloring matter and formed on the substrate, and a metallic reflection layer. The recording layer has a thickness so as to have an absorbance between 0.65 and 0.75. Information is recorded in the recording layer by a laser beam having a wavelength between 600 and 700 nm, using an objective lens having a numerical aperture between 0.55 and 0.70.

  • Patent number: 6162551
Abstract: A joining alloy of the invention is based on Co, Ni, or their alloy, and contains 1.0 to 2.3% by mass of C and 15.5 to 34.7% by mass of W. Using HIP, the joining alloy in the form of a casting or powders is integrated with a WC--Co or WC--Ni type cemented carbide via diffusion joining. Using HIP, it is also possible to obtain a composite material having an integral structure in which a cemented carbide and the joining alloy, and the joining alloy and steel are joined together via diffusion joining. The joining alloy may additionally contain up to 30% by mass of Fe, up to 3% by mass of Si and up to 3% by mass of Mn as well as up to 10% by mass of at least one selected from Cr, Mo, V, Nb, Ti, Zr, and Ta. It is thus possible to obtain a joining alloy having an improved joining strength without producing a brittle phase therein even upon joined to the WC--Co or WC--Ni type cemented carbide, and its composite material.

  • Patent number: 6155044
Abstract: It is an object of the present invention to provide an exhaust gas purifying system for an internal combustion engine in which the rise of the temperature of an HC adsorbent is adequately retarded to improve the purification of HC at the start of the engine. In an exhaust system of the internal combustion engine, there are provided a three-way catalyst provided in the downstream side of an exhaust manifold, an adsorbent-catalyst provided under the floor of an automotive vehicle and containing at least zeolite in its composition, and a catalyst provided in the downstream side of the adsorbent-catalyst. In particular, the heat capacity of an exhaust gas passage which connects between the three-way catalyst and the adsorbent-catalyst is increased greater than the heat capacity of the exhaust manifold. More particularly, the thickness of a wall of the exhaust gas passage is greater than that of the exhaust manifold. A substrate, a partition, or a muffler is provided across the exhaust gas passage.
