  • Patent number: 5858420
Abstract: A pre-plasticizing injection molding machine includes a plasticizing and flow regulating assembly connected to the tip of an injection chamber or shooting pot having an injection cylinder. A distributor valve allows the transfer of plastic resin into the shooting pot at low pressure and prevents the backward flow of resin to the plasticizing unit when the injection plunger injects the resin. A plurality of distribution channels in communication with either the distributor valve or a separate valve, and having outlets in the shooting pot angularly equispaced in proximity to the perimeter of the conical tip of the plunger uniformly distributes new resin behind resin retained in the shooting pot from the previous injection cycle, thereby obviating stagnation zones.

  • Patent number: 5846664
Abstract: A process is provided for the manufacture of porous metal components. The process involves preparing a colloidal suspension comprising a metal-containing powder in admixture with a binder system, and a plasticizer in an organic solvent. Optionally, a particulate pore forming agent may be added to the suspension. The suspension is cast into a thin sheet and air dried to thereby form a tape. The tapes are layered and formed by compacting at predetermined pressures to laminate the tapes, thus forming a green body. Optionally, a second pore-forming agent may be introduced between, or associated with, the tape layers. The green body is heated at a controlled rate to form a brown body, and finally sintered under controlled conditions to produce the finished component.

  • Patent number: 5820335
Abstract: A method and an apparatus for collecting plates from two rows of plates travelling side-by-side on a moving conveyor comprising inverting plates sequentially in one row of plates and merging said two rows of plates by depositing a plate from one row onto a plate in the other row to form a single row of double plates each having an inverted plate, and assembling a single row of said double plates into stacks. The double plates are assembled into stacks preferably by shingling the double plates to assemble a plurality of overlapped double plates, stacking shingled double plates to form horizontal stacks, turning each horizontal stack onto a side or end of the stack to form a vertically-stacked bundle, and rocking the vertically-stacked bundle on the side or end to align the plates on the side or end, rotating the bundle vertically through 90.degree.

  • Patent number: 5807516
Abstract: A continuous process for the production of an oriented high modulus profile is provided together with the novel profiles produced thereby. A dry polymer feedstock is melted and extruded through a die to form a profile precursor having a constant cross-section and specific dimensions. Sequential passage of the profile precursor through roller dies reduces its thickness whilst imparting molecular orientation thereto. The profile is cooled under tension to freeze in the molecular orientation thereof.

  • Patent number: 5775461
Abstract: A ladder system comprising a plurality of ladder segments arranged in seriatim. Each segment includes two sections joined by a hinge such that a portion of the segment may engage an object to be scaled. A retaining device is provided on each segment to maintain the segment in engagement with the object and each segment includes a riser portion which, when the segments are properly placed, forms the risers of a ladder. Adjacent segments are connected and are positioned in place on the object, by a user who pulls them into position one at a time.

  • Patent number: 5753383
Abstract: A power supply includes a fuel cell stack, a thermoelectric module and a burner module. The fuel cell stack generates a primary source of electricity and secondary source of heat. The thermoelectric module generates a secondary source of electricity. The burner module is juxtaposed to the fuel cell stack and the thermoelectric module, to provide primary heat to the system and to generate a temperature differential across the thermoelectric module, and to pre-heat a fuel and an oxidant for the fuel cell stack. The burner module is regulated to maintain a given system temperature, or when needed by the thermoelectric generator for secondary power generation.

  • Patent number: 5750160
Abstract: A method of forming a nickel shell for a mold insert to reproduce an article surface, and a novel nickel shell insert are disclosed. The method comprises securing the article to be reproduced to a base having a perimeter, forming a dam about the perimeter, filling the interior of the dam with a silicone, mounting a register plate over the article within the dam in contact with the silicone, and allowing the silicone to cure whereby the silicone forms a negative master of the article surface, removing the negative master from the article and positioning a steel mandrel over the negative master to define a cavity therebetween, feeding a silicone which is not adherent to the negative master into said cavity to fill the cavity and allowing the silicone to cure whereby the silicone forms a positive master which adheres to the steel mandrel, removing the negative master from the positive master, and depositing a layer of nickel by nickel vapour deposition onto the positive master to form a nickel shell.

  • Patent number: 5711833
Abstract: A process is provided for the manufacture of thin walled ceramic structures, particularly conical or near conical shaped structures. The process involves a tape casting technique wherein a green tape is prepared from a colloidal suspension containing a ceramic powder, a binder system, a plasticizer and a solvent. The suspension is cast into a thin sheet and dried to form a pliable tape. The tape is cut into planar, shaped pieces. Non-planar components of the final structure are preformed from the cut planar tape pieces into predetermined three dimensional shapes. The planar and preformed components are sequentially assembled within a die and compacted under pressure to form a green body. The green body is subjected first, to a burnout cycle to form a brown body, and then sintered to form the unitary, cohesive, thin walled ceramic structure.

  • Patent number: 5676306
Abstract: A closure for a container such as a paper cup. The container has an extended upper border having a series of crease lines extending downwardly from an upper edge, which when folded inwardly form a series of rectangles, each having a diagonal corner portion to form a closure panel. The panels may be displaced inwardly of the border in a mutually overlapping relation to close the container. By selecting a fold-over angle greater than neutral, the panels will converge in a mutual reactive relation to converge and lock in an inclined closure cone. The crease lines incorporate an adjoining reinforcing band to fold over within the upper border to form a reinforced band therearound. The containers are stackable when in an unfolded or partially unfolded condition.
