Abstract: Substantially crystalline calcium sodium metaphosphate having a degree of crystallinity from about 60% to about 75% as determined from density and differential thermal analysis measurements is prepared by (a) bringing together in water source materials for CaO, Na.sub.2 O, and P.sub.2 O.sub.5 in proportions sufficient to provide a CaO/Na.sub.2 O/P.sub.2 O.sub.5 mol percent ratio on a dry basis of about 29.0-34.0/16.0-18.0/50.0-53.0 and form a wet mix slurry containing a solid phase and an aqueous liquid phase and (b) heating the wet mix slurry at a temperature and for a time sufficient to remove the aqueous liquid phase and calcine the resulting solid phase to form the substantially crystalline calcium sodium metaphosphate.

Abstract: Iron/lithium promoted phosphorus-vanadium-oxygen catalysts for the production of maleic anhydride are prepared by contacting a substantially tetravalent vanadium-containing compound and a phosphorus-containing compound and a promoter component containing each of iron and lithium in a substantially anhydrous alcohol medium in the presence of anhydrous hydrogen chloride to form an iron/lithium promoted phosphorus-vanadium-oxygen catalyst precursor. Abstract: Aromatic compounds are nitrated in the vapor phase via a process comprising contacting the aromatic compounds with a nitrating agent in the presence of a nitration promoting catalyst comprising the adduct of a Group 4b-Group 3b metal oxide composition represented by the empirical formula:(M.sup.1.sub.a M.sup.2.sub.b O.sub.c).sub.x (NO.sub.2).sub.ywherein M.sup.1 is at least one element selected from Group 4b of the Periodic Table of the Elements, M.sup.2 is at least one element selected from Group 3b of the Periodic Table of the Elements, a is 1, b is 0 to 20, c is a number taken to satisfy the average valences of M.sup.1 and M.sup.2 in the oxidation states in which they exist in the composition, x is 1, and y is 0 to c, and a catalytically effective amount of sulfur trioxide. Such catalysts are particularly effective to catalyze the vapor phase nitration of chlorobenzene and are characterized in such reaction by providing a para/ortho isomer distribution ratio of at least about 2/1.
Abstract: Sheet composites containing asbestiform crystalline calcium M phosphate fibers wherein M is a metal cation selected from the group consisting of sodium and lithium, and mixtures thereof, are useful as a replacement or substitute for asbestos sheets in applications where fibrous materials are needed.

Abstract: A tall oil rosin paper sizing composition comprising a homogeneous aqueous liquid which is fully miscible with water at 5.degree. C. On a solids basis, the composition contains between about 15% and about 75% by weight of an alkali metal soap of a condensation product of tall oil rosin and an aldehyde, and between about 85% and about 25% by weight urea. Also disclosed are methods for preparation and use of the novel paper sizing composition.
Abstract: Hydroxyibuprofen is produced in good yield by reduction of p-isobutylacetophenone at the cathode in the presence of carbon dioxide. Hydroxyibuprofen is readily hydrogenolyzed to ibuprofen. Electrochemical carboxylation of other selected aryl methyl ketones is also effected.

Abstract: A polymer composition adapted for use in producing polyvinyl halide polymer products comprising a blend of a vinyl halide polymer and a particulate terpolymer having a molecular weight of at least about 100,000 and a glass transition temperature of at least about 50.degree. C. The terpolymer comprises repeating units derived from an olefin, a diester of an addition polymerizable unsaturated dicarboxylic acid, and a solubilizing monomer which promotes compatibility of the terpolymer with the vinyl halide polymer. A shaped plastic article produced from this composition, and method of producing the shaped article are also disclosed.

The catalysts are highly effective in that they exhibit a weight/weight productivity of at least 70 grams of maleic anhydride per kilogram of catalyst per hour.

The catalysts are highly effective in that they exhibit a weight/weight productivity of at least 70 grams of maleic anhydride per kilogram of catalyst per hour.
