  • Patent number: 6488423
Abstract: The disclosure relates to methods and apparatus for printing a document from a computer workstation to a multifunction peripheral. Upon receiving a print command, the computer workstation determines whether the multifunction peripheral prints pages in a face-up or a face-down configuration. If the multifunction peripheral prints pages in a face-down configuration, the workstation invokes a printer driver to send the pages of the document to a print controller in reverse order. The print controller processes an initial portion of the document and sends the initial portion to the multifunction peripheral for printing. The multifunction peripheral prints the initial processing portion of the document while the controller processes the remainder of the document.

  • Patent number: 6459704
Abstract: A method for prioritizing multiple access to a communication channel for the transmission of packets from a plurality of devices on the communication channel. It comprises the steps of once a packet is ready to be transmitted over a communications channel, sensing if a channel is idle, waiting for a predetermined (prioritizing) time after sensing the channel is idle and then transmitting the packet only if the channel is sensed to still be clear at the end of that (prioritizing) time. A scheme is also described for applying an efficient frequency hopping technique to the method for use on congested, shared radio-bands requiring spread spectrum techniques for access to the band.

  • Patent number: 6460028
Abstract: A system for organizing and accessing information includes the provision of an information gateway wherein information is stored independently of structure, and in a fashion such that it is easily accessible from remote locations. In the system, an information atom is received from a plurality of information gateways. The atom includes data representative of one or more data elements, as well as relationship associated with received atoms according to pre-selected definitions. The definitions set include allowable data values and allowable inferences. The atom is adapted for being stored in an information gateway so as to maintain relationship data between an atom and an associated gateway. The system selectively allocates data storage for a pointer and a data element. Viewpoint data is retrievable from a query of an atom.

  • Patent number: 6438632
Abstract: A message desired to be posted on an electronic bulletin board sent from a user's computer is checked with a posting-prohibited word list and a heed-required word list. In the posting-prohibited word list, words previously selected as those inadequate to be posted are registered. In the heed-required list, words previously selected as those to be heeded about the social reaction even though the message is allowed to be posted are registered. When the message desired to be posted includes no posting-prohibited word, the message is posted on an electronic bulletin board. When the message includes any heed-required word, the posting of the message is reported to an operation manager computer. When the message includes any posting-prohibited word, a letter screen indicating that the message cannot be posted is sent to the user s computer which has sent the message, and the operation manager computer is informed of the rejection of the posting.

  • Patent number: 6434547
Abstract: A method and system for capturing data and verifying the data accuracy, includes a structured document having defined regions dealing with different categories. Dictionaries specific to the categories are included to check the accuracy. of words and phrases in the various regions. Points are allocated to the entered data to facilitate subsequent decision making, and a facility is provided to maximize the accumulation of points by visually indicating regions that could potentially be filled in to increase points most effectively. Preferably data is entered orally by a user into a computer system, and transcribed using speech-recognition software. The user is prompted for data entry, and the prompting mechanism may follow a predefined pattern and speed, or be adjustable by the user, or be adjusted by the computer by monitoring past user behavior.

  • Patent number: 6434185
Abstract: A correlation system for use in wireless direct sequence spread spectrum systems includes a RF down converter which receives an encoded RF signal and generates therefrom analog in-phase (I) and quadrature (Q) signal components. These components are digitized and the digitized signals are then passed to each of the high precision correlator circuit and a low precision correlator circuit. The low precision correlator circuit consist of a bank of a plurality of low precision correlators which receive the I and Q signal components as inputs and correlates the same with progressively phase shifted or delay pseudo noise (PN) codes. A low precision correlation circuit locks on to the appropriate PN code phase shift or delay and applies the same as a reference PN code to the high precision correlation circuit for data acquisition and demodulation.

  • Patent number: 6427146
Abstract: A database event detection and notification system includes a rule definer for defining a high level rule which can include conceptual terms (e.g. bad, heavy) and as cooperative operators (e.g. approximate, similar-to, near-to). A rule converter converts the high level rule into a low level rule in which the conceptual terms and cooperative operators are quantified. An event manager detects and evaluates an event generated by the database or a Local Event Detector (LED). A rule manager applies the low level rule to the event detected by the event manager, and an action manager performs an action in accordance with the application of the rule by the rule manager. The action can include notifying a specified person or program that the event has occurred. The rule converter and the action manager utilize a Type Abstraction Hierarchy (TAH) for converting the high level rule into the low level rule and performing the action respectively. The rule comprises an attribute.

  • Patent number: 6418484
Abstract: A method of remotely executing a computer process between a parent computer initiating the process and a child computer executing the process. In one embodiment the process includes a step of associating objects with representations having specific object bindings dependent on the site of process of execution. The same representation has a first object binding if the process is executed on the parent computer, and a second object binding if the process is executed on the child computer. The set of objects associated with these location dependent representations may include objects resident at both the parent and child computers. Additional objects may be associated with a second set of representations having object bindings dependent upon the network site of process execution to accommodate remote process executions across two or more computer networks. In an alternative embodiment, objects are associated with multiple representations in an ordered merge directory.

  • Patent number: 6406009
Abstract: Composite material spring modules have a fiber reinforced composite material spring body with attachment fittings integrally formed about the spring body. The attachment fittings are molded of a flexible material which dynamically responds to changes in the shape of the spring body upon deflection. Integral formation of the fittings with the spring body provides a unified single piece module which is readily attachable to any structure where spring support is desired. In one embodiment, a mounting foot is configured for mounting of the spring module directly to a planar surface of a supporting frame member by a fastener, or alternatively configured to engage with a frame member without use of a fastener. The composite material spring modules exhibit the properties of stiffness and return to uncompressed state from total depth deflection without set.

  • Patent number: 6397768
Abstract: A machine for automatically producing a mattress border with handles sewn to the border material. Border material is pre-fed from a selected spool, screened for splice avoidance and measured. Handle material is fed from a selected spool mounted in a multiple handle material spool magazine mounted on rails, fed into a handle folding assembly, and cut to length. Ends of the handle material are folded under by the handle folding assembly and the handle then transferred in a folded condition from the handle folding assembly to a correct position on the border material. A double frame handle press holds each folded end of the handle material in place as each end is maneuvered under a sewing head needle to apply a stitch pattern to secure the folded ends to the border material. The double frame handle press is translated separately from the carriage assembly which travels in the sew pattern, to position the other end of the handle under the sewing needle.

  • Patent number: 6397412
Abstract: A bed frame constructed by assembly of rail members with universal caster mounts at points of intersection of the rails, where ends of the rail members are integrally connected to the universal caster mounts without any bracketry or parts attached to the ends of the rail members. The universal caster mounts have a top wall for connection to a rail member, a side wall, and a caster shank receiving ferrule. A slot in the top wall receives a portion of an end of a rail member for direct connection of the rail member to the caster mount. A portion of the end of the rail member engaged in the slot rests upon the top wall, flush with the portion of another rail member attached to the top wall, to provide a truly flush support surface for a mattress box spring. Different frame designs, and a low profile caster mount are also disclosed.
