Abstract: A magnetohydrodynamic generator discharges its gases to a vapor generator. A portion of the heat discharged to the vapor generator is recovered to elevate the temperature of the combustion air to the MHD burner. The burner discharge of an atmospheric heater further raises the temperature of the combustion air. The MHD exhaust gases passed through the vapor generator and the gases discharged from the atmospheric heater are combined to superheat the generated vapor and feed liquid to the vapor generator.
Abstract: Flow paths for liquids are disclosed in vessels, the paths oriented with electrodes which are electrically energized to establish electrostatic fields through the paths. One of the liquids is more polar than the other liquids in the paths. One of the fields is intense enough to generate the force to move drops of the polar liquid fast enough to shear the drops to smaller sizes and disperse the smaller drops. A second one of the fields is intense enough to generate the force to move the dispersed drops into coalescense. Various spacing and means of energizing the electrodes are disclosed to place the forces on the liquids in sequence and at different intensities.
Abstract: A primary element is connected to a control element of a first fluid pressure relay to move the element to positions at which pressure fluid outputs of relatively small volumes will be generated to represent the element positions. The pressure fluid outputs of the first relay are directed to the input of a second relay which generates pressure values for pressure fluid which are proportional to the first relay outputs in, and at, relatively larger volumes of the pressure fluid.
Abstract: Water is sprayed through a gas stream before it flows to an Air Quality Control System scrubber tank to absorb SO.sub.2 and produce a highly acidic liquid stream. The acid stream is mixed with a bleed stream from the AQCS cycle in a tank which will provide the residence time to complete the reaction of chemical in the bleed stream.
Abstract: The rotor of a turbine meter has two ceramic bushings and is mounted on a pair of ceramic shafts, each shaft extending from a spider support. A ceramic washer is mounted in each spider support and about the shaft extending from the support to provide ceramic-to-ceramic bearing for the rotor in both directions of fluid flow through the meter.
Abstract: A nuclear fuel pin is formed of an elongated metallic tube, closed at each end, containing stacked fuel pellets and material including little, or no, fissionable material, and formed into porous, or bubbled, microspheres placed in the annulus between the pellets and the internal wall of the tube.
Abstract: The upper portion of a nuclear reactor vessel supported in a concrete reactor cavity has a structure mounted below the top of the vessel between the outer vessel wall and the reactor cavity wall which contains hydrogenuous material which will attenuate radiation streaming upward between vessel and the reactor cavity wall while preventing pressure buildup during a loss of coolant accident.
Abstract: Fluids are separated by passing their mixture through an electric field which is varied in strength. As coalescense of a first fluid dispersed in the second fluid begins, the mixture is flowed in a path which carries the coalescing fluid through the field which progressively changes strength. Fluid shear forces are avoided between the coalescing fluid and the fluid in which the coalescing fluid is dispersed. The size of the coalescing fluid drops increase and separate from the remaining fluid mixture under the force of gravity.
Abstract: An ion exchange compound in a fluid organic carrier is cycled between mixing and separating from a weak acid stream and a strong acid stream. The weak acid stream is cycled between directly contacting ore to chemically dissolve metal and exchanging the metal for hydrogen ions of the exchange compound. The strong acid stream is cycled between exchanging its hydrogen ions for the metal bonded to the exchange compound and yielding the metal to a recovery system. The mixing and separation of the organic carrier with the two acid streams is by a pump, an electric field and a centrifuge.
Abstract: A heat source and an element to be heated are immersed in a common liquid heat exchange medium. Baffles are arranged to guide the heated portion of the liquid upward and toward the heated element and guide the cooled portion of the liquid downward and toward the heat source in such a manner as to avoid conflict between the two flows to maximize the heat exchange between the source and element.
Abstract: Fluids are separated from each other by passing their mixture through an electric field and centrifuge in sequence. The drops of a first fluid dispersed in a second fluid are coalesced by the force of an electric field to a predetermined size. The mixture is then passed into a centrifuge which develops the force to move the coalesced drops away from the other fluids of the mixture without reaching the value at which fluid shear forces, between the coalesced fluid and the fluid in which the coalesced fluid is dispersed, will fragment the coalesced drops.
Abstract: A gas-liquid separator vessel has mounted within its internal volume the adsorber tower of a dehydrator for the separated gas. The connections between the internal volumes of the two vessels are kept to minimum length, and heat exchange between the separating fluids and reconcentrated dessicant of the dehydrator is facilitated.
Abstract: A multi-bladed turbine meter is in a fluid flow line and has two magnetic pick-ups at the periphery of its blade tips positioned to be pulsed at different times by each blade as each blade passes the pick-ups. A circuit is connected to both pick-ups to determine which pick-up is pulsed first and to register the volume of fluid which is passed through the meter in each direction.
Abstract: A high boiling organic liquid, including 1-formylpiperidine or an alkylated derivative, is continuously applied to absorb hydrogen sulfide and water from a gas mixture, and is subsequently regenerated with heat.

Abstract: Air quality control system scrubs flue gas of SO.sub.2 and particulates with a slurry of lime/limestone and water. The contact between the slurry is in a centrifugal section which is the upper part of a tank in which the chemical action is completed and from which the slurry is recirculated to the contact section. The gas to be scrubbed is inserted into a circular path within the scrubbing section into which the slurry is sprayed. The treated gas is withdrawn from the circular path in heat exchange relationship with the incoming gas.
Abstract: A reel for retrieving and discharging a line has more than one hub for storing the line. The hubs are concentrically aligned with a dividing plate captured between them and a radial slot in the plate with which the line can be transferred between the hubs as it is retrieved. Means for steadying the reel structure against the body of the operator and handles for rotating the reel are provided so the assembly may be manually operated with either hand.
Abstract: A nuclear fuel pin has positioned within it material which will decompose to release an oxidizing agent which will react with the cladding of the pin and form a protective oxide film on the internal surface of the cladding.
Abstract: The core support barrel of a nuclear reactor is clamped and loaded from the closure head of the vessel with a holddown barrel extending as a link from the closure head to a seat on the core support barrel.
