  • Patent number: 5743177
Abstract: A cross directional caliper control system for a calender. A coarse caliper control mechanism adjusts the pressure over a first range of values. A fine caliper control mechanism adjusts the pressure over a second range of values, where the second range of values is smaller than the first range of values. Sensors sense the dimension of the paper web passing through the calender. A control mechanism coupled to the coarse calender control mechanism, the fine calender mechanism and the sensors controls the caliper across the width of the paper by varying the nip pressure with both the coarse caliper control mechanism and the fine caliper control mechanism to shift the variability of the caliper so that it corresponds to nip pressure adjustments within the second range of values. Bumpless adjustments of the coarse control mechanism are made by making counteracting adjustments to the fine control mechanism.

  • Patent number: 5611814
Abstract: A resorbable surgical appliance for use in supporting soft tissue in a superior position in the body. The surgical appliance includes a coupling member that connects the surgical appliance to a bone or hard tissue and a gripping member or members secured to the coupling member selectively gripping soft tissue and retaining the soft tissue in a superior position. The connected coupling member and gripping member are formed from a resorbable mixture which maintains a specified percentage of the connection strength with the bone or hard tissue for a period of time at least equal to a healing period. Thereafter, the surgical appliance is substantially resorbed by the body over a period of time created for healing. The surgical appliance is particularly adapted for use in endoscopic brow lift surgery and other endoscopic cosmetic, plastic and reconstructive surgical procedures.

  • Patent number: 5577306
Abstract: A one-handed closure and release mechanism for selectively shortening the dimension of an item utilizing frictional engagement of a stretchable elastic cord member and a restrictive guide structure having at least two openings. In various embodiments the elastic cord member may either be secured inside a channel or fixed within an object or garment or may have two free ends extending out of the closure mechanism. The one-handed closure mechanism operates by use of the exertion of force on the one or more free ends of the stretchable elastic cord member which results in the relative proportion of the stretchable elastic cord member inside the closure mechanism being reduced which, upon release of the tension, has the effect of causing the crushing of the object to reduce the length of the channel through which the elastic cord member extends inside of the restrictive mechanism.

  • Patent number: 5511248
Abstract: An improved design for an anti-slip glove is disclosed. The surface of the glove is adapted to provide an especially strong bond between the palm and/or fingers of the glove and the club, racket or other piece of sports equipment which the athlete is holding, pulling or pushing. The improved anti-slip glove utilizes a thermoplastic polyurethane film panel, incorporated into the glove's design at key pressure points, which is selected to exhibit a strong physical bond with the rubber, plastic, leather or other composite materials used to manufacture the hand grips that are a part of hand-held sporting equipment. The anti-slip panel may be attached separately to the palm and fingers of the glove or made an integral part of the glove.

  • Patent number: 5490290
Abstract: An improved design for an open fingered glove is disclosed. The traditional mechanism of attachment of the palm piece to the back piece through the use of fourchettes is eliminated and, instead, the stability of the attachment of the glove parts is provided by a by the use of connector strips made from lycra, leather or other traditional materials. The connector strips connect the sides of each finger from the palm part to the back part at a location proximate the tip of each finger and running to a point short of the crotch of each finger. Using such a construction, structural integrity may be maintained while permitting an opening to exist at the crotch of each finger, thereby providing for increased cooling of the hand.

  • Patent number: 5459878
Abstract: A protective guard suspension system for a joint covering for covering at least a portion of the wearer's hand and wrist includes an angled resilient guard member and two coupling members. The angled resilient guard member protects a portion of the wearer's hand and wrist and absorbs impact forces by reversibly deforming. The angled resilient guard member has first and second ends and an intermediate angled portion and also has first and second openings proximate to the each of the first and second ends. The first coupling couples the first end of the angled resilient guard member to the hand covering by extending through the first opening and forming a first loop at a first end of the first coupling and is coupled to the hand covering at a second end of the first coupling so that the first end of the angled resilient guard member is secured to the hand covering.

  • Patent number: 4993128
Abstract: A closure mechanism for a tubular member, open-ended container or glove. A channel member coupled to the portion to be closed forms a channel of an opened length corresponding to a distance around the portion to be closed. The channel has a cross-sectional area and terminates with one or two closely spaced openings having an opening cross-sectional area. A stretchable cord is present within the channel and extends outward beyond at least one of the openings. The stretchable cord has an unstretched cross-sectional area and a stretched cross-sectional area. The unstretched cross-sectional area is larger than the stretched cross-sectional area and the opening cross-sectional area. By pulling on the portion of the stretchable cord extending out of the opening or openings, the stetchable cord takes on the stretched cross-sectional area at least proximate the opening or openings.
