  • Patent number: 4317871
Abstract: A battery side terminal assembly which includes a metal terminal insert keyed into the external portion of the battery side wall with a body portion which passes through an aperture in the side wall to the inner area of the battery container. The terminal insert is held in close contact with the battery side wall by a plastic ring which is force fit onto the body portion of the terminal insert. Subsequently a side terminal strap is resistance welded to the body portion of the insert to create a tightly sealed assembly. The plastic ring advantageously cooperates with the body portion of the insert and the strap to retain molten lead during the resistance welding operation.

  • Patent number: 4308546
Abstract: An ink jet tip assembly in which the individual jets are comprised of a piezoelectric cylinder having a longitudinally through bore, a glass ink nozzle disposed in the cylinder bore and a low melting temperature alloy interposed between the bore and the nozzle for anchoring the nozzle to the piezoelectric cylinder. The method of assembly for the individual jet tip assemblies comprises inserting the glass ink nozzle into the cylinder bore which contains the anchoring alloy in a molten form. A method of checking for flaws in the cylinder comprises fluxing the cylinder bore for allowing flux to pass through any cylinder pinholes or cracks. Upon introducing solder for coating the interior cylinder wall, some solder will appear as shining spots or areas on the cylinder exterior wall.

  • Patent number: 4290002
Abstract: A method of and apparatus (10) for controlling the charging of a battery (17) wherein determination of a preselected point in the battery charging operation is determined by a circuit portion (22) determining the duty cycle of digitized waveform information provided by a digitizing circuit portion (21). The digitizing circuit portion provides an output having opposite states depending on the voltage appearing across the battery (17) being charged and a reference voltage provided by the control apparatus (10). The apparatus includes a capacitor (61) having a voltage corresponding to the duty cycle of the digitized information. An output transducer (23) is controlled by the capacitor voltage and additional circuitry of the apparatus (10) including a detecting zener diode (17) so as to cause the transducer to provide an output signal when the effective voltage on the capacitor rises to the zener diode nominal voltage so as to provide current therethrough for effecting the desired control of the transducer (23).

  • Patent number: 4221123
Abstract: An analytical system for determining whether separator materials should function satisfactorily in the alkaline environment of a secondary alkaline system comprises determining the rate at which zinc diffusion is occurring as well as whether or not the separator material is serving as a complete barrier. The overall analytical sequence also includes determining the following characteristics of the separator material: (1) freedom from either defects in the film or pores with larger than acceptable sizes, (2) suitability of the porosity, (3) satisfactory electrolyte transport, and (4) satisfactory resistance to chemical attack in the operating environment of the cell or battery system.

  • Patent number: 4209091
Abstract: A button cell package in which button cells are releasably retained in position by an adhesive surface layer on a laminated structure having a resilient layer between the adhesive layer and a nonresilient base. An additional layer having preferential barrier properties is used with cells of the metal-air type and is located between the adhesive surface layer and the resilient member. The adhesive layer seals the metal-air cell to increase cell shelf life and prevents inadvertent dislodgment and loss of cell capacity, yet permits small amounts of evolved hydrogen to diffuse from the cell. The resilient layer serves as a cushion and provides a means for obtaining maximum surface contact between the adhesive surface layer and the button cell surface to maintain the cell in impact-resistant, releasable adhesive contact with the adhesive layer. The method of assembling the package is also described.
