Abstract: Residual geothermal steam containing hydrogen sulfide from a steam turbine is condensed with an aqueous solution of ferric chelate whereby the hydrogen sulfide is converted to free sulfur and the ferric chelate is converted to ferrous chelate. The ferrous chelate is subsequently oxidized back to the ferric state and reused.
Abstract: An interfacial process for the preparation of polycarbonates having improved optical properties is disclosed wherein dihydric phenols are reacted with phosgene in the presence of an aqueous alkali solution and an organic solvent. After the polycarbonate oligomers are formed, the reaction mixture is diluted with additional solvent (25 to 125 volume percent). A polymerization catalyst such as triethylamine is then added to generate high molecular polycarbonates and the resins are then recovered.
Abstract: Heat resistant thermosetting prepolymers are prepared by reacting one or more methylated pyridines or pyrazines with one or more hydroxy aromatic aldehydes. The total number of methyl groups on the pyridine or pyrazine can vary from 2 to 4. The prepolymers are cured to produce heat resistant polymers and laminates with conventional fibers such as carbon fibers.
Abstract: Heat resistant thermosetting prepolymers are prepared by reacting one or more methylated pyridines or pyrazines with one or more aromatic dialdehydes, and isopropenyl phenols. The prepolymers can be further reacted with bismaleimides to make prepolymers with lower cure temperatures and faster cure rates. The total number of methyl groups on the pyridine or pyrazine can vary from 2 to 4. The prepolymers are cured to produce heat resistant polymers and laminates with conventional fibers such as carbon fibers.
Abstract: Creped absorbent composites made from lightly crosslinked or water-swellable hydrophilic polymers with layers of wicking substrates are disclosed. The creped composites are made by drying the composites to less than 8% moisture and creping them in a creping zone. The creped composites have a tissue-like feel at low relative humidities with rapid absorption and are useful to make low bulk, high fluid capacity personal care products. Absorbent pads made from the above composites are also disclosed wherein the pads comprise one or more layers of wicking substrates, a water impermeable bottom sheet, and a water permeable face sheet.
Abstract: Unsaturated polyester or polyesteramide compositions containing an unsaturated polyester/polyesteramide or mixture thereof, an ethylenically unsaturated monomer, and a dicyclopentadiene ester of an unsaturated polycarboxylic acid are prepared and used to cure resin compositions. The resin compositions have improved resistance to heat aging, reduced shrinkage upon curing, and improved corrosion resistance with excellent mechanical properties.
Abstract: Phosgene is removed from an off gas containing phosgene by contacting the off gas with an aqueous solution containing alkali metal hydroxide and a tertiary amine compound having 3 to 20 carbon atoms. The concentration of the alkali metal hydroxide can vary from 1 to 25 weight percent and the concentration of the tertiary amine can be any amount which is effective in the contact apparatus chosen. The amines found to be useful are trialkyl amines having 1 to 4 carbon atoms and pyridines having 0 to 3 alkyl groups of 1 to 5 carbon atoms and diamines such as 4-dimethylaminepyridine.
Abstract: Butene-1 and ethylene mixtures are made by reacting ethylene with a trialkyl aluminum in a boiling bed reactor. The process is more efficient in that it is selective for making butene-1 and more butene-1 is produced per unit weight of the trialkyl aluminum.

Abstract: A method is disclosed for recovering carbon dioxide from gases containing the same as well as oxygen and/or sulfur compounds employing aqueous 5 to 80% alkanolamine solutions. Corrosion of the metals of construction and solvent degradation are minimized by the use of copper ion maintained in solution and continuous removal of ionic iron and solvent degradation products by treating the solvent or a portion of the solvent with a carbon bed, mechanical filter and/or a anion exchange resin.

Abstract: Fluid streams containing hydrogen sulfide from a steam turbine or from a sour gas stream are contacted with an aqueous solution of a polyvalent metal chelate and an oxidizing agent whereby the hydrogen sulfide is converted to free sulfur and then to soluble sulfur compounds. The metal chelate is reduced to a lower oxidation state metal chelate and reduced metal chelate is subsequently oxidized with air back to the higher oxidation state and reused.

Abstract: A corrosion inhibited composition containing a gas conditioning solution such as an alkanol amine with water or with organic solvents and with small amounts of soluble thiocyanate compounds, soluble trivalent bismuth compounds with or without soluble divalent nickel or cobalt compounds. The compositions are useful to separate acid gases such as carbon dioxide from hydrocarbon feed streams in gas conditioning apparatus with minimum amounts of corrosion of the ferrous surfaces.

Abstract: Carbonate polymers having increased thermal stability are prepared by incorporating into the polymer chain an oligomer having the formula ##STR1## wherein R is the divalent residue of a dihydric phenol or a dihydric polynuclear phenol,R.sub.1 is an alkyl, aralkyl or alkaryl group having 1 to 25 carbons, and n is a number having an average value of 1-200.
Abstract: Heat resistant resin compositions are prepared containing unsaturated polyester resins or polyesteramide resins terminated with a norbornene type group, an ethylenically unsaturated group, and a dicyclopentadiene ester of an unsaturated polycarboxylic acid.
Abstract: Absorbent articles are rendered more blood absorptive by incorporating water soluble amido compounds having the formulaH.sub.2 N--X--NH.sub.2where X is --CO--, --CS--, --SO-- or --SO.sub.2 --, and nonionic surfactants into the articles.
Abstract: The corrosion of ferrous metal surfaces in gas conditioning apparatus is inhibited by using a gas conditioning solution such as aqueous alkanolamines which contain thionitrogen compounds such as metal thiocyanates or thioamides. After recycling the gas conditioning solution for a few days, the solution dissolves sufficient amounts of nickel or cobalt or other metals in the equipment to act as a synergist with the thionitrogen compounds. In the event, the equipment does not contain any soluble synergistic metals, these metals may be added to the gas conditioning solution as soluble metal salts. Examples of useful additive metals are cobalt, nickel, calcium, copper, chromium, zinc, tin, aluminum, and magnesium.
