  • Patent number: 8339597
Abstract: A label-free multiplexed sensing platform is based on light interaction with aperiodic photonic structures with an advantage of a broadband operation. Multiple-scattering-induced “fingerprinting” colorimetric signatures can be used as a transduction mechanism. Aperiodic sensing platforms can operate in the infrared to provide an overlap with spectral fingerprints of biological molecules. Miniaturized optical biosensors may be based on engineered colorimetric scattering signatures (structural color), sharp spectral features, non-uniform angular distributions of scattered light, and broadband manipulation of the local density of states in nano-textured scattering surfaces with deterministic aperiodic order. The biosensors can be fabricated in semiconductor, metal, low- and high-index dielectric platforms using standard nanofabrication techniques such as electron-beam lithography, ion-beam milling, etc, and can be replicated over large areas by standard nano-imprint lithography.

  • Patent number: 8324544
Abstract: A multi-stage fin deployment assembly includes a rotary actuator configured to release a first spring-loaded stage that, when deployed, releases a second spring-loaded stage to deploy a set of deployable member or fins. By chaining these spring-loaded stages together, a relatively small input force, as provided by the rotary actuator, causes the second spring-loaded stage to generate a relatively large output force on the fins. This multistage force magnification makes it possible for the deployment assembly to utilize smaller actuators that require less power and take up less space, compared to conventional locking mechanisms.

  • Patent number: 8327103
Abstract: A storage processor of a data storage system includes a data relocation task scheduler that provides system limit control on the execution of data relocation requests. The data relocation task scheduler also provides fairness and concurrency limit enforcement by scheduling relocation requests from different provisioning domains, such as storage pools, in a fair manner. For example, the data relocation task scheduler includes stackable sets of pending task queues that store incoming data relocation requests. The data relocation task scheduler applies an iteration scheme to remove data relocation requests from the pending task queues thereby providing scheduling fairness among the queues and among the different provisioning domains within the data storage system.

  • Patent number: 8323549
Abstract: A method for forming temporary protective coatings and bondable surfaces is disclosed. In the method, a soluble layer is disposed on a material surface, such as the interior surfaces of cell walls of a web material. The soluble material is then removed or leached from the web material to form and expose a roughly textured, bondable surface for bonding with another material, such as AVCOAT insulation. Use of the soluble layer, therefore, enhances the bondability of any surface that requires good adhesion, such as where the surface is difficult to reach for conventional surface preparation techniques.

  • Patent number: 8327422
Abstract: A technique supports authentication of a server device (e.g., a web site). The technique involves supplying a user device (e.g., a client browser) with a user mechanism (e.g., a browser plug-in) which is constructed and arranged to dynamically generate user representations. The technique further involves receiving, at the server device, a request from the user device. The technique further involves providing a server representation to the user device from the server device in response to the request. The user device successfully authenticates the server device when a user representation dynamically generated by the user mechanism matches the server representation provided to the user device. However, the user device unsuccessfully authenticates the server device when the user representation dynamically generated by the user mechanism does not match the server representation provided to the user device.

  • Patent number: 8316223
Abstract: In a wired data telecommunication network power sourcing equipment (PSE) coupled to a powered device (PD) carries out an inline power discovery process to verify that the PD is adapted to receive inline power, then a plurality of classification cycles are carried out to convey a series of inline power classes back to the PSE. The series of inline power classes may all be the same, in which case the PD is legacy equipment and is adapted to receive the power level corresponding to that class. If they are not all the same, information is thus conveyed to the PSE which may, for example, correspond to a specific power level to be applied or to other information.
