  • Patent number: 5664174
Abstract: A system and method for discovering similar time sequences in a database of time sequences includes a computer-implemented program which first breaks each sequence into small windows. The windows from the first sequence are compared to selected windows from the second sequence to determine which windows are similar. Pairs of similar windows are then stitched together when certain stitching constraints are met to establish pairs of similar subsequences. Likewise, pairs of similar subsequences are stitched together, and the lengths of the stitched subsequences are then compared to the overall length of the time sequences to determine whether the time sequences meet a similarity criteria.

  • Patent number: 5663969
Abstract: A memory controller parity system that detects both even and odd bit errors in memory addresses and global errors in memory data. The parity system detects errors in any memory system employing an address bus or data allocation map. It is effective for applications requiring random memory accesses as well as in blocked-data accesses such as in controller buffer memories for servicing disk file systems and tape storage systems. The controller stores data in memory together with a single appended global parity bit representing (n-1) bits from an n-bit address, thereby detecting both even and odd fixed errors over time. A p-bit identification register can be added to the controller to facilitate detection over time of global data errors arising from data allocation map errors during the data storage period. The single-bit parity scheme is compatible with existing single-bit parity memory systems.

  • Patent number: 5664146
Abstract: An operator to host communications interface for managing a manual data storage library. A host processor controls Peripheral Data Storage Devices (PDSDs) in the library. Displayed operator interaction fields are presented by a graphical user interface on the screen of a display device connected to a library manager controller. Library manager program code loaded in program memory in the library manager controller is provided with interface logic, for communicating with external devices, as well as the PDSDs through the host processor. The operator communications interface is an integral component of the library and thus may be used for: alerting an operator of the need to mount or demount a particular data medium; alerting an operator with coherent and succinct messages thus improving the quality of messages provided to operators; and alerting an operator with a minimum number of messages.

  • Patent number: 5662356
Abstract: A roll correction system for use in a vehicle including a body, wheels, and a suspension coupling the body to the wheels includes a roll correction apparatus hydraulically actuated by a hydraulic signal indicative of a roll direction. A hydraulic signal source provides the hydraulic signal conditioned to indicate a roll position in response to a first steering direction. A countersteer correction element maintains the condition of the hydraulic signal to indicate the roll direction in response to countersteer in a second steering direction opposite the first steering direction as would occur, for example, in a skid.

  • Patent number: 5663938
Abstract: A checkerboard data storage library is provided which includes a plurality of receptacle modules and a plurality of picker modules. The receptacle modules and the picker modules are arranged alternately side by side in a closed loop planar array. Each receptacle module has a plurality of open-ended receptacles arranged one above the other in a column which extends perpendicular to the planar array. Each open-ended receptacle is capable of receiving and storing a recording medium. Each picker module has a picker which reciprocates vertically in a respective column opposite open ends of the receptacles in receptacle modules for transporting recording media therebetween. The above arrangement facilitates simpler expansion of the library and assures its operability even though one or two picker modules should fail.

  • Patent number: 5664171
Abstract: A database management system determines, in a single pass over an unordered database, the quantile information. The system sequentially compares each tuple in the data set to a test value, and then selectively inserts the tuple in a test set having a cardinality less than the cardinality of the data set based upon the comparison. The system next uses the quantile information to estimate the number of tuples in the database which satisfy a user-defined predicate to generate an efficient query plan.

  • Patent number: 5659443
Abstract: A retainer includes a resilient split band with a transition region and a loading region between its top and bottom edges. The loading region of the split band is provided with a plurality of loading domes which extend inwardly and a plurality of tabs which are located in the transition region of the split band adjacent its top edge. Upon assembly, the inner annular edge of the disk is located in the transition region of the split band with the top surface of the disk engaging the bottoms of the tabs. Downward movement of the split band on a spindle hub causes the loading domes to engage a cylindrical hub and cone the split band with its bottom edge located inwardly from its top edge. Pushing downwardly on the tabs causes the disk and the retainer to be forced downwardly on the spindle hub until the bottom edge of the split band engages a hub flange within a recess adjacent the hub.

  • Patent number: 5658152
Abstract: A swivel plug is provided which has male and female plug portions which pivot 180.degree. with respect to one another about a common pivot axis between first and second positions. A plurality of male and female electrical contact pairs slidably engage one another and pivot about the common pivot axis. Male and female bodies, which receive the electrical contact pairs, also pivot with respect to one another about the common pivot axis. The male and female bodies and the male and female electrical contact pairs are arranged in a novel relationship to mutually retain one other for the pivotal movement. The swivel plug eliminates the need for an electrical cord between an adapter of a laptop computer and a wall receptacle which has a downwardly located ground receptacle or a wall receptacle which has an upwardly located ground receptacle. The swivel plug also enables plugging a computer adapter or a typical extension cord into a receptacle where there is a rigid space constraint.

  • Patent number: 5659440
Abstract: A cartridge magazine with interfaces to automatic cartridge feeder devices. On one side, the magazine has an open interface that provides unencumbered access by a robotic picker that accesses cartridges for a library. The magazine is accessible on another side by a transport mechanism of an automatic cartridge feeder (ACF). The transport carries a cartridge from the magazine to a drive unit where the data stored on the cartridge is read or new data is written. The interface to the ACF includes a handle member for placing the magazine into the feeder. The magazine is mounted by loading it into the feeder and pushing the handle inward allowing a plunger on the ACF to engage a groove on the handle member that locks the magazine into place. Locking the magazine in place activates a sensor, thereby enabling the operation of the feeder. The interface securely engages the ACF so that the magazine cannot be accidentally dislodged from it.

  • Patent number: 5655286
Abstract: A method of making a combination suspension and transducer magnetic head for longitudinal recording which can be used for contact recording and flying above the media. The transducer includes a horizontal first pole piece and a horizontal and vertical sections of a second pole piece. A magnetic gap is formed between the first pole piece and the vertical section of the second pole piece. The suspension layers are formed mainly from the insulation layer that separate the first horizontal pole piece and the horizontal section of the second pole piece, and an insulation layer that covers and protects the transducer layers. The layers of the combination head are deposited on a wafer in a row and column configuration. A release layer is deposited on the substrate, first and then individual thin film layers of the transducer are deposited to form the horizontal first pole piece and horizontal section of the second pole piece which is activated by a conductor coil wound around the horizontal section.

  • Patent number: 5655107
Abstract: A digital logic simulation system simulates a digital logic system having component blocks connected by nets with a master queue that contains events to be performed during the simulation, a scheduler that adds events to the master queue such that the processing of each block is represented by an update event and a compute event, and a dispatcher that maintains a time clock that defines a simulation clock time, extracts events from the master queue according to the simulation clock time, and produces a simulation output, such that wire delays for particular nets are modelled with a corresponding update event and compute event. Only those nets that have an associated wire delay that is being modelled will cause a wire delay update event and compute event. All other nets will not result in wire delay events.
