  • Patent number: 5420923
Abstract: A method of transmitting addressed messages to subscribers comprises the steps of defining the group or individual subscriber to be addressed, creating the message, assigning the message to the individual or group to be addressed, scheduling the message for transmission, transmitting the message, and recording the transmission of the message. The message creating step further includes the steps of defining message attributes such as background color, creating sets of instructions for the subscriber, if required, setting a data field related to alerting the subscriber and compressing the data length of the message using a predetermined compression code. A system control computer, according to the present invention, comprises a billing computer interface for interfacing with a billing computer and a user interface for providing access to messaging services to a system operator, each of the billing and user interfaces for providing data to a group queuing subsystem and a system event scheduler, respectively.

  • Patent number: 5417301
Abstract: A worker platform assembly is modular in construction so as to be configurable according to the configuration and size, particularly width, requirements of each bridge and to metal surfaces thereof which are to be reconditioned by abrasive stripping and recoating. The assembled platform is suspendable at each end by suspension frame assemblies which are rollable along the parapets of the bridge for repositioning the platform assembly, with the suspension assembly being adjustable to various configurations of parapets. An adjustable curtain frame enables sealed enclosure of bridge surfaces to be treated and optimum access of workers to those surfaces during the treatment. Airborne residue is evacuated by vacuum for subsequent disposal in a manner which does not contaminate the environment, while heavier residue and spent abrasive grit is collected and positively moved off of the platform assembly for subsequent, environmentally safe separation and reconstitution of the grit for reuse.

  • Patent number: 5416988
Abstract: A customized fit shoe, and particularly a high-top ice hockey skate, having a plurality of interior inflatable chambers. The chambers are configured and inflatable to different amounts to conform to the contours of the arch and the area below the malleoli of the foot in the shoe. The inflation of the chambers is accurately and easily adjusted through an upper push-to-deflate valve. When thereby adjusted, the concavities of the arch and ankle are filled without restricting the plantar or dorsi flexion of the foot.

  • Patent number: 5415293
Abstract: A stackable and nestable container is provided which comprises a bottom surface and two pairs of opposed side walls integrally joined with the bottom surface and each other to form a substantially rectangular open-top container. The uppermost surfaces of the side walls collectively form an upper container rim. A container lid is adapted to be received along the upper container rim. Ventilation apertures are formed in each of the side walls. Also, each side wall includes a pair of column sections. Each column section includes a recessed portion, an inner shelf, and a lower column support. The column sections form outer surfaces which project outwardly away from the side walls. By using the column section design, all the support geometry for the container is located in the corners of the container. The upper container rim comprises a double thickness of material around substantially its entire periphery.

  • Patent number: 5416829
Abstract: A dual mode cellular radio communication apparatus includes an echo canceller which cancels echo signals caused by acoustic coupling between a hands-free microphone and a loudspeaker in both analog mode and digital modes. An analog-to-digital converter and digital-to-analog converter may be used both in an analog mode and in a digital mode. A second analog-to-digital converter and a second digital-to-analog converter may be selectively used in the analog or digital mode. The echo canceller may be rendered inoperative during hand-set operation. In addition, a bypass circuit may be provided between an input and an output of the echo canceller so that the echo canceller is bypassed.

  • Patent number: 5414452
Abstract: In ink jet printers in which the printing head (33) is connected to an ink reservoir (16), such as may be used in teleprinter or facsimile apparatuses, it is necessary to foresee the expiry of the ink in the reservoir in order to be able in due time to replace the printing head or the pertinent cartridge. A logic circuit (40) is used to count the number of drops gradually expelled, and, with any necessary correction, compares this number with the maximum number of drops equivalent to a known volume of ink contained on average in the reservoir. Expiry of the ink is indicated in in dependence on the result of the comparison.

  • Patent number: 5414204
Abstract: The improved method of treating activated carbon having an organochlorine compound adsorbed thereon which comprises adding water to said activated carbon and then exposing said activated carbon to ionizing radiation, thereby decomposing and rendering harmless the organochlorine compound adsorbed on the activated carbon is described. The method is capable of safe and efficient decomposition of the activated carbon that has been used in adsorption treatment of organochlorine compounds such as PCBs and trichloroethylene that have heretofore been difficult to treat. The activated carbon that has hitherto simply been accumulated to date after adsorbing organochlorine compounds can be effectively treated by the method at low cost.

  • Patent number: 5412588
Abstract: Upon receipt of the sine (sin .omega.) or the cosine (cos .omega.) of a digital angular frequency, a multiplier performs predetermined arithmetic operations of multiplication on it. An output of the multiplier is stored in a register. An adder-subtracter performs arithmetic addition or subtraction of the output of the register and an output of the multiplier. The arithmetic results are stored in first and second registers or third and fourth registers. The arithmetic operations performed by the multiplier include arithmetic multiplication of outputs (initial values) of the third and fourth registers by the sine or cosine of the digital angular frequency and arithmetic multiplication of the results of arithmetic operations by the adder-subtracter stored in the first and second registers or the third and fourth registers by the sine or cosine of the digital angular frequency.

  • Patent number: 5412757
Abstract: Disclosed is a fuzzy control system which calculates a membership function concerning a control value of a to-be-controlled object through a fuzzy inference operation in accordance with an input value from the to-be-controlled object and a control rule, and determines the control value from the membership function to control the to-be-controlled object. This fuzzy control system has a plurality of internal states respectively expressed by a plurality of membership functions in addition to the input value and the control value, determines the state of the to-be-controlled object using a rule for evaluating the input value, alters the internal state by fuzzy inference, stores a decision result as a new internal state, and determines the control value of the to-be-controlled object through fuzzy inference from the new internal state and the input value.
