Method and apparatus for distributed sensing management and control within a cognitive radio network
Patent number: 8150328Abstract: A technique for spectrum sensing management and control for a secondary communication system seeking to utilize another communication system's spectrum is provided (600). Sensor control data is sent from a base station to subscriber units (604). Sensing measurements are taken and sent back to the base station for ranking (608) as sensed feedback information. Comparisons of the sensed feedback information are made to each other and to thresholds aligned with the types of measurements taken (610). An initial ranked channel list is generated (612). Weighting of the initial ranking list and secondary ranking list is followed by re-ranking the channels according to the weighting into a final ranking list (612). The final ranking list is transmitted to the mobile units to enable operation within the other communication system's spectrum within interfering with that system (614). The weighting is based on the type of sensing measurement taken as opposed to the channel.Type: GrantFiled: September 17, 2008Date of Patent: April 3, 2012Assignee: Motorola Solutions, Inc.Inventors: Apoorv Chaudhri, Oleg Andric, Yadunandana N. Patent number: 8145230Abstract: A method (300) and cognitive radio (CR) wireless device (102) are provided for dynamically accessing spectrum in an opportunistic spectrum access wireless communication system (100). The method includes: transmitting, from a CR wireless device, a signal (216) having a first bandwidth within an unoccupied portion of spectrum (206), and after a time interval (T3) following the transmitting, and upon determining that an adjacent spectral quantum is occupied, transmitting from the CR wireless device a signal (216) having a second bandwidth, the second bandwidth being less than the first bandwidth. The method doubles a rate of growth of bandwidth of a transmitted signal when a spectral quantum adjacent to one side of the signal is unoccupied and a spectral quantum adjacent to the other side of the signal is occupied. The method utilizes knowledge of location of the CR wireless device and of band-edges to intelligently use spectral fence quanta.Type: GrantFiled: April 30, 2008Date of Patent: March 27, 2012Assignee: Motorola Solutions, Inc.Inventors: Edgar H. Patent number: 8140017Abstract: A cognitive radio wireless device (114) dynamically manages signal detection in a cognitive radio system (100). Spectrum sensing is performed for a first sensing frame on at least one communication channel. At least one observed signal is received (204) on the at least one communication channel. A detection decision (210) is performed to determine if the observed signal is noise or an active signal associated with an active user. The detection decision (210) is performed by comparing observed signal energy estimation with a current detection threshold. The current detection threshold can be an arbitrarily defined threshold or a detection threshold based on a previous detection decision for a sensing frame immediately prior to the first sensing frame.Type: GrantFiled: September 29, 2008Date of Patent: March 20, 2012Assignee: Motorola Solutions, Inc.Inventors: Qicai Shi, Neiyer S. Patent number: 8140085Abstract: A technique for a secondary communication system to utilize spectrum designated to another (or primary) communication system is provided. By ranking a plurality of secondary base stations based on base station transmit power, calculated required transmit power and path loss, a set of criteria is developed for selecting a highest ranked secondary base station for operation within a primary's spectrum. The ranking may be adapted based on mobility of the secondary's subscriber; and as such the secondary system communicates within the primary's spectrum using the adaptively ranked base stations. Channel selection may also be ranked. The technique and apparatus allows a cognitive radio (CR) network to operate within an incumbent network's spectrum.Type: GrantFiled: September 30, 2008Date of Patent: March 20, 2012Assignee: Motorola Solutions, Inc.Inventors: Apoorv Chaudhri, David P. Patent number: 8135424Abstract: A cooperative sensing technique (300) operates by selecting a group of subscribers (302) from a secondary system, measuring a cooperative sensing metric (306) and then using the metric to identify an achievable spatial diversity gain for the group of selected subscribers (308). Once an achievable spatial diversity gain is determined for the group (308/412), it is compared to a required spatial diversity gain (310), and if the condition is met at (310), the validated group can begin spectrum sensing (314) to identify a vacant/suitable channel for operation. If the achievable spatial diversity gain is insufficient, then a new group of users is selected (312) within the secondary system and the process repeats itself.Type: GrantFiled: December 3, 2008Date of Patent: March 13, 2012Assignee: Motorola Solutions, Inc.Inventors: Yadunandana N. Patent number: 8130713Abstract: Credit based channel transmission scheduling (CBCTS) of packet data units (PDUs) on a downlink channel is provided based on priority, quantity, and timing efficiency. The CBCTS technique includes initializing a set of credit accounts with a set of credit values. Credit accounts are sorted to determine the account having the highest number of credits. An account is selected from the set having an associated PDU type that is ready for transmission and has a size that fits within a MAC block. The selected PDU is inserted into the MAC block. The cost associated with the inserted PDU is subtracted from the credits. The selected PDU size is subtracted from the MAC block size, and a determination is made as to whether there is free space remaining on the MAC block for insertion of additional PDUs. If so, another sort and search is performed prior to transmission on the downlink channel.Type: GrantFiled: May 29, 2009Date of Patent: March 6, 2012Assignee: Motorola Solutions, Inc.Inventors: Mohammad Zib Beiroumi, Ken Jakobsen
