Patent number: 5679511Abstract: The present invention started when a .lambda.gt11 cDNA library of normal human melanocytes was screened with antibodies directed against purified hamster tyrosinase. Two important cDNA clones were isolated: cDNA .lambda.mel 34 and .lambda.mel 17-1. It is concluded that .lambda.mel 34 contained cDNA encoding human tyrosinase. Moreover, the cDNA gene for human tyrosinase was recovered from the .lambda.mel 34 and can be used for many purposes including the production of pure human tyrosinase. This gene and its promoter are characterized herein. Studies suggested that .lambda.mel 17-1 gene product act on melanin biosynthesis's pathway distal to tyrosinase. Melanocytes preferentially express an mRNA species, Pmel 17, whose protein product cross reacted with anti-tyrosinase antibodies and whose expression correlated with the melanin content. The deduced protein structure has been analyzed and its chromosomal location in mouse and man has been mapped.Type: GrantFiled: June 1, 1992Date of Patent: October 21, 1997Assignees: Donald Guthrie Foundation for Medical Research, Inc., Indiana University FoudationInventor: Byoung Se Kwon

Patent number: 5664360Abstract: A holster for game calls which can be fastened around the stock of a gun or of a bow. The holster has an elongated body made of flexible material, with a plurality of pockets formed on one side. The pockets are preferably formed so as to open toward the center of the elongated body. A fastener, such as hook-and-loop material (Velcro.RTM.) allows the elongated body to be wrapped around the gunstock and the ends fastened to each other, so as to form a sleeve around the stock with pockets on the outside. If the pockets are formed to open toward the center of the elongated body, they will open upwards when the holster is fastened around the generally horizontal gunstock. Game calls can be inserted into the pockets, and removed easily without removing the gun from the shoulder of the hunter and without startling the game. A bow-hunting variation has the pockets turned 90.degree.Type: GrantFiled: April 15, 1996Date of Patent: September 9, 1997Inventor: John Conway

Patent number: 5634419Abstract: A watercraft having its propulsion machinery near the bow. The hull of the craft has a single, tapered bow section, with a drive pod under the center of the bow. The bow section is tapered up into the hull aft of the middle of the craft, while the sides of the craft are extended downward aft of the middle of the craft, forming a double hull at the rear. The drive pod is capable of freely rotating, allowing the craft to be steered by vectoring the thrust at the bow. Because the thrust is pulling the craft from the bow, rather than pushing from the stern, the craft is inherently stable in the manner of a front-wheel drive automobile.Type: GrantFiled: June 26, 1996Date of Patent: June 3, 1997Inventor: Hermann K. Cymara

Patent number: 5635401Abstract: The invention relates to measuring the decrease in phosphorylation of the fatty acid binding protein (FABP) found in the milk fat globule membrane (MFGM) of bovine or human milk to detect growth hormone treatment in animals. MFGM of cows treated with recombinan+bovine somatotropin (bST) displays weaker FABP autophosphorylation activity than non treated cows. MFGM isolated from cows treated with bST have significantly reduced levels of phosphorylated FABP. The bST test of the present invention can be used not only to determine whether the animal producing the milk has been treated with bST, it can also be used to determine the efficacy of bST on milk production. Dairy managers could thus base their decision on whether to continue bST treatment on such a test.Type: GrantFiled: September 8, 1995Date of Patent: June 3, 1997Assignee: Cornell Research Foundation, Inc.Inventors: Vitaly L. Patent number: 5631987Abstract: A new type of transmitter optical subassembly (TOSA) especially suitable for fiber optic communication. The TOSA has a light source such as a laser diode, preferably of the surface-emitting type, with an inherent mode-field diameter matched without a lens to that of the optical fiber, resulting in enhanced light coupling, more relaxed tolerances, and less sensitivity to laser misalignment. The TOSA can be in a receptacle form, with an annulus having a light conductor matched to the light source and the fiber, or can be in "pigtail" form with a permanently attached buffered optical fiber. Only one active alignment is required, and can be eliminated, if the laser diode is aligned passively using lands on the annulus or the end of the fiber cladding, and matching lands on a mounting substrate, with molten solder alignment used to draw the two into alignment.Type: GrantFiled: June 7, 1995Date of Patent: May 20, 1997Assignee: Reliaspeed, Inc.Inventors: Ronald C. Patent number: 5617864Abstract: Disclosed herein is a system for positioning an ultrasonic transducer where the user can see the positioning device and a display of the image being generated at the same time. This system solves the problem of the user having to look away from the transducer to see the image. The method comprises positioning a display screen to show the ultrasonic image being generated to the user such that the user can see the positioning of the transducer and the image on the display screen at the same time. To accomplish this the display screen can be incorporated into or mounted directly mounted onto the transducer housing. Once the user properly positions the transducer and is satisfied with the image, a image capture signal can be sent by the user. Once the image is captured it can be sent to an associated computer for analysis, printed or saved for archiving, etc.Type: GrantFiled: August 4, 1995Date of Patent: April 8, 1997Assignee: Animal Ultrasound Services, Inc.Inventors: James R. Patent number: 5613334Abstract: The invention presents a non-metallic laminated composite reinforcing rod for use in reinforced or prestressed concrete. The rod is made by creating a sheet of core material comprising a number of layers of "pre-preg" material. Ribs are formed on top of the core from additional layers of pre-preg material laid with the fibers transverse to those in the core. The ribs are then covered by additional layers of pre-preg laid with fibers parallel to the core fibers. The material is heated to fuse the layers. Finally, the sheets of laminated reinforcement are cut parallel to the core fibers to the width desired. The resulting reinforcing rod is superior to steel in corrosion resistance, flexibility, durability, and strength. The reinforcing rod may be used as a prestressing tendon in prestressed concrete after encasing the ends of the rod in an attachment formed of a sleeve filled with groutingmaterial such as mortar or epoxy. The glass-fiber embodiment is non-conductive.Type: GrantFiled: June 30, 1995Date of Patent: March 25, 1997Assignee: Cornell Research Foundation, Inc.Inventor: Petru Petrina

Patent number: 5591255Abstract: The present invention comprises a series of discoveries related to the problems associated with formulations that destroy the color change properties of thermochromic encapsulated dyes. One aspect of the present invention is the discovery of a method of correcting these formulations to allow the addition of thermochromic dyes. Certain solvents destroy the dye, therefore any aldehydes, ketones, and diols, and most aromatic compounds should be removed from the formulation and if needed they should be replaced with solvents preferably having a large molecular weight (i.e. greater than 100 and low reactivity). Secondly, the formulation should be adjusted to be neutral (i.e. 6.5-7.5 pH) or have a low acid value. These two adjustments will allow the thermochromic dyes to added to the formulation without a loss of its color change properties.Type: GrantFiled: September 30, 1994Date of Patent: January 7, 1997Assignee: Chromatic Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Lyle D. Small, Gerald Highberger
