Patent number: 6778494Abstract: A network arrangement for delivering IP services to subscribers includes a core network, a plurality of label switched media gateways coupled to the network and each providing an interface for one or more subscriber terminals. Call servers associated with the network are used to establish connections between pairs of gateways, these connections being routed across the core network via tunnels established therein. The tunnels are exclusively reserved for traffic between the label switched media gateways so as to provide security of that traffic from third party access and to provide a guaranteed quality of service. Because traffic is accepted into a tunnel only if bandwidth is available in that tunnel, firm and meaningful quality of service guarantees can be given to users.Type: GrantFiled: March 2, 2000Date of Patent: August 17, 2004Assignee: Nortel Networks LimitedInventor: Roy Mauger

Patent number: 6777358Abstract: A glass composition for a seal consists essentially of 70-75 wt % of PbO, 3-7 wt % of PbF2, 5-8 wt % of Bi2O3, 5-7 wt % of B203, 2-5 wt % of ZnO, 1-3 wt % of Fe2O3, 0-2 wt % of CuO, 0-2% of TeO2, and a trace <0.2% of MnO2, the composition having a flow temperature of <350° C. Such seals can be flowed at low temperatures, using different and less environmentally damaging constituents to those used before. Damage to temperature sensitive materials near the seals, can be reduced. Low flow temperatures can be achieved without excessive degradation of properties such as low viscosity, low expansion coefficient, good adhesion to glass and metals, low permeability of air, good long term hydrolytic stability. A filler such as a ceramic powder, is added to match the temperature expansion coefficient to the materials being sealed. It can be used to fix silica fiber into electro-optic devices to achieve hermetic joints with high mechanical stability.Type: GrantFiled: July 25, 2002Date of Patent: August 17, 2004Assignee: Nortel Networks LimitedInventors: Kenneth Snowdon, Christopher Tanner, Timothy Durrant, Christopher Woodend

Patent number: 6778541Abstract: The present invention relates to data tunnelling and in one embodiment to the tunnelling of IP (Internet Protocol) data across an OSI (Open Systems Interconnect) network. In the preferred embodiment, network elements include both an OSI stack and an IP stack, and a respective directory of OSI addresses and corresponding IP subnets. Each network element generates a routing data packet, conveniently a Link State Packet (LSP), which includes the OSI address and IP subnet(s) associated with that network element. The LSPs are distributed across the network in normal manner. Upon receipt of an LSP from another network element, each network element updates its respective directory in respect of said other network element. Thus, each directory is automatically updated to reflect changes in the network, particularly in respect of IP subnets. This arrangement significantly reduces the need for manual tunnel configuration in the network.Type: GrantFiled: December 1, 2000Date of Patent: August 17, 2004Assignee: Nortel Networks LimitedInventors: Allen Houston, Paul Fee, Christopher Murton, Ewart Tempest, Philip Christian

Patent number: 6778130Abstract: In a cellular mobile telecommunications system the position of a mobile station can be estimated in terms of its bearing and range from a cell site. A multi-element direction finding antenna at the cell site receives signals from the mobile station and a receiver circuit estimates the bearing using the relative phase of signals received at different antenna elements and estimates the range by measuring round trip delay of signals to and from the mobile station. Motion of the mobile station can introduce errors into the bearing estimate due to frequency offset and frequency spread when element sampling is non-simultaneous. Compensation for these errors is introduced by using signal samples successively received at the same antenna element to estimate Doppler frequency offset and spread. It is necessary to ensure accurate calibration of the direction finding antenna and the receiver circuit.Type: GrantFiled: December 5, 2001Date of Patent: August 17, 2004Assignee: Nortel Networks LimitedInventors: David Damian Nicholas Bevan, John Edward Hudson, Francis Giles Overbury, Christopher John Reed, Simon John Gale
