Abstract: Text, images, and/or graphics of electronic documents should be organized and laid out in a two-dimensional format for presentation to the viewer. The best such layout depends upon the content present, the creator's intent, the output device, and the viewer's interests. To analyze the qualitative nature of the layout in quantifiable terms, the electronic document is measure using various quantifiable factors; such as, balance, uniformity, white space management, alignment, consistency, legibility, etc.; that impact a qualitative nature of a document. Such quantifiable factors are then used to quantize the aesthetics, ease of use, eye-catching ability, interest, communicability, comfort, and convenience of the document.

Abstract: A cardiac assist device senses conditions of a heart and controls the generation of various electrical stimuli in response to sense conditions of the heart. The cardiac assist device generates a electrical pulse so as to defibrillate a fibrillated heart when the cardiac assist device determines from the sensed conditions a state of fibrillation. The cardiac assist device generates a chaos control electrical signal so as to bring a pre-fibrillated heart condition back into a normal beating condition when the cardiac assist device determines from the sensed conditions a pre-state of fibrillation. Lastly, the cardiac assist device generates an electrical enhancement signal that causes a threshold of pacing cells in the heart to be exceeded in response to a subthreshold stimulus when the cardiac assist device determines from the sensed conditions a subthreshold pacing signal.
Abstract: An electromagnetic shield has a first patterned or apertured layer having non-conductive materials and conductive material and a second patterned or apertured layer having non-conductive materials and conductive material. The conductive material may be a metal, a carbon composite, or a polymer composite. The non-conductive materials in the first patterned or apertured layer may be randomly located or located in a predetermined segmented pattern such that the non-conductive materials in the first patterned or apertured layer are located in a predetermined segmented pattern with respect to locations of the non-conductive materials in the second patterned or apertured layer.

Abstract: The present invention is a system and method for dynamically altering the size of scanned image files based on the export file size, network demand and/or transmission requirements specified by a system administrator or end user. An embodiment as described here discusses about pushing the color text/edges into the black mask as the first approach in order to reduce file size at the expense of color fidelity.

Abstract: A speech-driven control device for a media system includes a housing; a controller; a first communication port to enable communication of instructions between a data processing system and the controller; and a second communication port to enable communication of instructions between a media device and the controller. The controller includes a speech recognition system to recognize human speech and to convert the human speech into a first set of commands and into a second set of commands. The first set of commands provides instructions to the data-processing system to enable speech driven control of a media presentation. The second set of commands provides instructions to the media device to enable speech driven control of a functionality of the media device.

Abstract: This device is a handheld, battery-operated instrument that utilizes light beams to project visible lines for increasing the accuracy in determining angles. A linear potentiometer is incorporated at the pivot point between the two diodes and measures a voltage change based on the angle between the arms of the device.
Abstract: A voltage compensation unit reduces the effects of induced voltages upon a device having a single wire line. The single wire line has balanced characteristic impedance. The voltage compensation unit includes a tunable compensation circuit connected to the wire line. The tunable compensation circuit applies supplemental impedance to the wire line. The supplemental impedance causes the characteristic impedance of the wire line to become unbalanced, thereby reducing the effects of induced voltages caused by changing magnetic fields.

Abstract: The present invention is a method and an apparatus for controlling the volume of a printable substrate after an image is created thereon, and more particularly to the production and use of a calenderizeable substrate in which a final thickness may be adjusted. The system employed for the process includes a pair of compression rollers wherein the nip force therebetween may be adjusted.
Abstract: A fully integrated portable personal computing device includes a lid body member and a main body member. An input system inputs data and commands and a microprocessor processes the data in accordance with the commands. A display system displays information. The display system is located in the lid body member. A projection system is integrally included in the portable personal computing device for projecting the information displayed on the display system to an area remote of the portable personal computing device. The projection system can also be a peripheral plug-in device for replacing a floppy disk drive peripheral for the portable personal computing device.
Abstract: The present invention is a method and apparatus conveying a roll of liner stock bearing removably adhered components such as labels. The liner is pulled through the feeder by a capstan drive having opposed fluted nip rollers driven by a stepper motor. Advance of the stepper motor is controlled by a programmable electronic controller. The linered labels are led through a tensioner and around an acute-angle peeler edge which separates the labels from the liner. The peeling action advances a label onto a platform comprising a bed of rollers having an inherently low-adherence surface. Preferably the rollers are undercut to form circumferential ridges and reduce the surface area in contact with the label adhesive and to minimize adherence thereto. When peeling of a label is completed, the label has been advanced onto the roller bed to precisely the proper location for acquisition by a pick-and-place machine.

Abstract: The present invention is an apparatus for the transfer of fluid or fuel, from a reservoir to a container, which may be a tank from which the liquid will be used or a tank in which the liquid will be temporarily stored. The apparatus includes a compliant base element, preferably having a tapered outer diameter and two holes therethrough. The first hole is adapted to sealingly receive one end of a length of tubing whereas the second hole is adapted to receive the intake end of a hand-operated vacuum pump. Upon insertion of the opposite end of the length of tubing into a liquid-filled reservoir, and insertion into and sealing of the compliant base with a container or tank, the pump may be operated to negatively pressurize the tank or container and initiate the flow of liquid from the reservoir to the tank or container.

Abstract: The present invention is a method and apparatus a method and apparatus for the refurbishment of a beverage vending machine to enable a can vending machine to be reconfigured for the dispensing of bottles. In particular, the apparatus and process are directed to the modification of certain components of a can vending machine to enable it to be utilized for dispensing of newer, 16- or 20-ounce beverage bottles. The modification includes a change in the spacing and configuration of the container storage rack and the modification of dispensing mechanisms to allow a can-type system to dispense bottles and thereby avoid the need to completely replace the vending machine.
